I don't know how you get the line stripper off, but the winch body on the 18s
is confined by a spring clip in a groove on the spindle shaft. The clip is like
2 turns of a slinky. You have to pick out the top end with a small screwdriver
or a knife, and then work the rest of it off bit by bit carefully so as not to
damage it. Curved nose needle nose pliers may help.

Where I work we design and manufacture transformers, mostly for aerospace. I
am not an EE but have worked with them regarding transformer efficiency. We do
not sell into the consumer or computer market but I have been involved with
some related design projects and looked over the incredibly small coils and
transformers used in today’s computing devices. Many of the leading “chip”
inductor and transformer companies have developed highly engineered and
automated products and processes. Almost all are manufactured in Asia.

A power transformer almost always has some amount of excitation current or
related power waste when idling. Some smarter switchmode power supply circuits
may be able to limit the losses at a cost of complexity. I use a SWAG
(scientific wild ass guess) of 15% to 30% loss at each conversion (i.e. shore
power to computer battery, comp battery to USB = 30%+ loss).

In my opinion, using a separate battery or the boat’s own power system would be
more efficient than using a computer’s power system for onboard accessories.
Having said that, if you have your laptop plugged into your boat’s 12V supply
and have the ability to maintain the battery bank (solar, engine etc.) then
using the USB power for convenience power may have little penalty. In summer
keep an eye on heat buildup around the battery and the power circuitry.

Has anyone tried a desperate 6 v battery to feed a bunch of bare non

I do not know how a desperate 6 V battery would work, I never came across one.
;-) But USB is 5.0 V nominal, not 6 V and you likely damage things if you feed
it with more than 5.25 V.

I am replacing ports in an old Allmand 35. What a job! They're the plastic
opening ports from Gray Enterprises (Pompanette) that you see on a lot of older
Hunters. Screwed in from inside with a protruding lip and trim ring on the
outside.

The cut out in the coach roof was oversized by 3/8 to 1/2 inch. The gap was
filled with sealant, looked like silicone.

I took a worn out blade for my Dremel MultiMax, filed the teeth off and rounded
the corners. It cut through the silicone fairly quickly and shortened the
length of the job. It works way better than a 5 in 1 knife or hand scraper.

I seem to recall a lister who was developing a prototype scraper blade.
However, there are several commercially available now to fit a variety of
vibrating saws.

I also ordered a commercial scraper blade for my MultiMax, it's Dremel part
MM610. Much wider than my home made one. The Bosch OSC2FSC blade looks good
also.

If you are thinking of looking into them be advised that they come in rigid and
flexible blades. The flexible blade is able to get under flanges, etc. and
still have the rest of the blade held off the surface.

I'm thinking that people are using these scraper blades to remove layered
bottom paint now also.

The vibrating saw has become one of my "go to" tools for boat work. Great for
making cut outs for VHF or stereo installs.
