Snow is for skiing, not shoveling.

Actually looking for snow here. I'm in Vail, CO. The World Alpine
Championship racers here this week aren't happy. Got some snow today but
temps were near 40.

I'm ready to go SAILING. Left Louisiana Jan 15. Skied Big Sky, MT; Grand
Targhee and Jackson Hole, WY; and now am moving around ski areas in
Colorado. Will put 5000+ miles on the old Suburban.

Stus-List Trophy hunter stories?

2015-02-10 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
Joe's thread on the CHESS and cruising ratings and races makes me wonder
about "trophy hunters".

We had a boat owner here whose rating was for a fixed prop. He swore
repeatedly his boat was correctly rated.

Some of his competitors strongly suspected he had a folding prop. One day
a competitor dove under the guy's boat. Sure enough, a folding prop.

Any other stories?

Well we are an hour south of Boston...so instead of another 24" on top of a

Phew...it pays to be south this time of year.

Re: Stus-List NOR CRYC Annual Race Over

2015-02-10 Thread Joe Della Barba via CnC-List
PHRF NS = Regular racers that don’t want to mess with a chute.

CHESS = Single and double handed racers.

CRUISING = Cruisers and others just getting into racing. We’ll even make you a
rating if you don’t have one. I would hope a “real racer” would have more
integrity than to come and cherry pick a trophy here. “I am so cool, my VOR 70
beat that Catalina that was towing a dinghy” isn’t much bragging rights. The
only “racers” that might belong in here would be a skipper that ditched the
racing crew and wanted the wife and kids to get to race without being yelled at
and scared of being hit.

I am interested how the CHESS vs Cruising class separation is achieved. I know
that in some clubs while cruising class is created mostly for lesser
experienced crews with less well prepared boats there are some extremely well
prepared boats with very experienced racers who enter cruising class to use
less crew and less inventory. This cans ometimes create an imbalance

I hope you understand the meaning of my question. It is important that
inexperienced racers have a great class to encourage new people or less keen
people to participate without discouraging them by being clobbered by
experienced skippers / boats. These more experienced boats also need to be
able to race with reduced inventory and crew.

Re: Stus-List Garhauer Rigid Boom Vang

I sell lots of used boat stuff on eBay. I find 25-30% of new is common for
marine items in very good condition. Items in excellent to new condition
might fetch 50%+ of new.

Remember to make a $$ adjustment for the brackets. You may need to have
Garhauer make you new brackets. That shouldn't cost much.

Re: Stus-List Garhauer Rigid Boom Vang

2015-02-10 Thread Rick Brass via CnC-List
I have Garhauer rigid vangs on both my 25 and my 38. Can’t endorse them enough
for both reliability and usability, and the price is pretty good as well.

I’m pretty sure the vang on the 25 is 12:1 (and cost about $200), and the one
on the 38 is 16:1.

The vang on my 38 cost about $300, but that was the better part of 10 years
ago. I see the 20-1 is over $450 in the current Garhauer catalog. I also see an
aluminum version of the vang (instead of stainless) for $375.

If you decide to get the used vang, call Guido at Garhauer and he will make you
a set of tangs to fit the boom and the mast of your 27. That is what happened
when a friend installed a used Garhauer vang on his Cal 27 three or four years
ago. Sent Guido a cardboard template for the shape of the spars (press solder
wire around the spars and trace the shape onto a piece of cardboard), and he
sent back the stainless tangs. I think it cost about $50 plus shipping.

Re: Stus-List Garhauer Rigid Boom Vang

2015-02-10 Thread Gary Nylander via CnC-List
If you buy a brand new Garhauer, you can have them custom make the mast and
boom plates for attaching it for that price. Thus, having to fabricate that
yourself, the old one should be discounted a bunch! I would start at half of
what it cost new (back in the day) and then figure out how much it will cost to
get the plates made.

I have one of the old units on my 30, and am very happy with it - the
Boomkicker we have on the J-80 is not nearly as easy to use, so there is some
value in having a good unit. But it is old.

Thanks ... current model pricing is $495 (US), I highly doubt that would
apply to a 10+ year old boom vang. Hard to determine a used value not
something that comes up for sale very often as far as I can see so that’s why
I’m asking.

I've been following this topic any time I see it come up - I have
  windows in need of replacement.
I like the sailing anarchy suggestion - with coincides (fairly
  closely )with Don Casey's recommendation
  http://www.sailmagazine.com/boatworks/replacing-fixed-portlights
He recommends double sided tape and Dow Corning 795 sealant.
The one difference he suggests using just the double sided tape
initially  - then squeeze the sealant into the gap after the
  window is in place.

Here's another way:

Clean all traces of silicone from the window and frame. This
will take roughly forever. I used a product I got from an
auto parts store called "Acryl-Safe" which did a good job.
You could also try any number of citrus-based silicone
removers. Clean off all the remover residue with Interlux
Special Thinner 216.

You could try rebedding without screws. I opted to use screws
on 6" centers, 4" would have been better. Drill the holes
slightly oversize and use a washer under the screw head.

The sealant is the next step. I used Life Seal (NOT Life Caulk!)
because it has good adhesive qualities and does not interact
with the acrylic/Lexan (whatever you have). If I was starting
from scratch, I would use Sikaflex 295 UV with the special
primer and skip the screws.

Re: Stus-List NOR CRYC Annual Race Over

2015-02-10 Thread Hoyt, Mike via CnC-List
Joe

Besides for standard PHRF classes this year we will have Cruising and CHESS.

CHESS is single handed/double handed and Cruising is casual sailors that might
not have much experience or a valid rating.

Hope the email system does not mangle this too much.
