Awhile ago I posted about my Home Depot galvanized A4 exhaust riser
replacement and got lots of advice about using a continuous piece of
stainless steel instead.

It just so happens that a friend of mine with an A4, in an out of the
way port with no access to stainless steel, has a (probably)
galvanized exhaust riser that is leaking a little at connections
between the pipe and the 90 degree elbows. Is there any sort of high
temperature sealant I can suggest?

Re: Stus-List halyards

2015-05-07 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
With the new hi-tech/low stretch lines there really aren't any cons. Rope
doesn't need fancy splices, it can be cut, you can freshen up the worn end
at the head or flip it end for end. I considered replacing my sheeves but
they weren't too badly chewed up and were a "V" shape to accommodate wire
or line. I was warned that they would "box" the jacket but that wasn't
really a problem. Just make sure you aren't just going to use stretchy
rope like Sta-set. Low stretch was the whole reason for wire rope in the
first place. I'm a big fan of Yale Crystalline and like Sampson Warpspeed
as a close second. Here's a link to the PS article that tested the stretch
and compared it to cost.

https://drive.google.com/folder/d/0B8pEh5lnvP1ySGpOTUdGRW9xdzQ/edit

If you are replacing halyards then now is the opportunity to consider the
color coordination of the lines. I found and article that suggested a
color theme for each sail. I chose red for my spinnaker, blue for the
headsail and green for the main. Solid colors for the halyards and various
fleck paterns in the same theme for each sail's control lines. The main
was tricky cause there are so many controls and not enough variations of
fleck. I came close to a solution by using the same rope for the similar
controls. Main sheet, traveler and vang are white with green fleck.
Cunningham is solid green with white fleck. Halyard, as mentioned before,
is just solid green.

Hi Allen,
Defender sells the wire to rope halyards. All rope halyards can work in your
sheaves if they are not chewed up. The choices for halyards are many, mostly
driven by cost. I like Chrystalyne or V100 for Jib and main halyards. The
halyards on my 36 footer are 3/8". You may be able to go smaller to save bucks,
weight and windage. APSltd.com can advise: 800-729-9767. I'd pay the extra

‎I did this on my 26 about 6 years ago. Originally I just replaced the line as I didn't have the mast down. The sheaves were in okay shape and the wire / rope sheaves didn't chew up the new line. When I had the mast down 3 season ago, I replaced the sheaves. You need the mast down as you need to remove the sheave box to get at the sheaves. â€ŽI got new, exact size sheaves made  from Zephyrwerks out of Port Townsend, Washington. Delrin with a brass bushing. $38 US each. While I had the mast down, I removed the topping lift and turned the main halyard into a 2:1 purchase by bringing it down through A Wichard, stainless steel saddle shackle (for the head of the main) and ‎back up to the old topping lift pin at the head of the mast. I know it sounds ‎overkill, but I can get the main up now, right to the black stripe by hand. Just a couple of turns of the winch to set the draft position. (I replaced the topping lift with a Garhauer rigid vang. sam :-)C&C 26 Liquorice Ghost Lake Alberta From: Allen White via CnC-ListSent: Thursday, May 7, 2015 5:42 AMTo: cnc-list@cnc-list.comReply To: cnc-list@cnc-list.comCc: Allen WhiteSubject: Stus-List halyardsI am sure this has been on the list before, but I cannot find it.The wire to rope halyards on my 26 are done.  I think I should go to all rope. Re: Stus-List rig tuning and others

2015-05-07 Thread David Knecht via CnC-List
I wanted to report back to the list on a couple of earlier discussions I
initiated:

1. I checked the furler/headstay with regard to tension the other day and with
no sail on it, the headstay and foil had very little give at all. I suspect
that with a genoa deployed and the sag it induces, there will be a lot more
play, and that is probably what I was remembering. So I think my concerns over
a loose rig were unfounded.

2. I bought a set of Alden ratcheting wrenches to play with and find them to
be a relatively inexpensive but quite useful tool. Several times already I
have used them in tight quarters to loosen or tighten a bolt/nut. It would not
be the tool of choice for a really stuck bolt that needed lots of force, but I
have begun grabbing them first for many small jobs. With a rough guess at
size, I can carry two wrenches and fit most everything. It feels like the
metric/SAE size difference is irrelevant (I have not tested scientifically yet)
because of the way the head ratchets, so instead of having to sort through my
sockets and box wrenches for the correct size (and my boat seems to be a mix of
metric and SAE) I can use these. It grabs better than an adjustable, so I will
never use that tool again. As an added bonus, they are stainless steel. Dave

VPC would be fine for halyards, relatively inexpensive, but is a bear to
splice. You could easily go with 1/4 inch Dyneema and put covers near the
shackle and where it is cleated/goes through clutch. Easy to splice, great
value.

Re: Stus-List halyards

2015-05-07 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Hi Josh,
Great website articles on line. Like your color scheme ideas too. Some sailors
get carried away with red and green indicating port and starboard.

I added solid red racing sheets for the genoa after a friend blew two tacks
when he stood or sat on the tails during the release.

Our mainsheet is black w a white fleck and so I chose a smaller solid black
line for the fine tune. My crosshauls are a single line, white with green and
red flecks. I found the line on sale and thought the red and green would
indicate the line covered both port and starboard.

Our boat's spinnaker pole downhaul is a light blue line that is double ended.
It changes the look of the boat when rigged, and I should change it to a whiter
line someday.

Listers,

I'm proud to report that the Starship Enterprise was launched today with the
tide.

We shall continue the voyages we have begun, seeking out new worlds and new
civilizations. Boldly going where no man, or no one, had gone before.

All the best,

Based on info from the website, it looks like you just need to get the data
into a .CSV formatted document for it to be able to be imported into the
system. If you can find the numbers, that shouldn’t be too tough.

Looks like they are catching up to B&G. Of course, the big question is whether
