Re: Stus-List Solar power controllers

2016-05-22 Thread Marek Dziedzic via CnC-List

Keep in mind that the controller will simply see a higher voltage on the
battery and will stop charging. No ill effects.
My morningstar controller is permanently connected to the battery (actually to
both, but it is a dual controller). Any other source of charge has simply to
compete. But all of them depend on the voltage, so they can easily work
together.

Subject: Stus-List Solar power controllers

I am about to hook up a Morningstar Sun Guard SG-4 controller between a solar
panel and my battery #1. My plan is to use the NC sun to keep my starting
battery topped off between races without using the battery charger/AC although
if I am on board, I will use the charger.

My question for the list is will the
Solar controller be damaged if I switch the battery charger on while the solar
unit is still connected to the battery? My SWAG is that it is protected against
such events with a diode but I prefer a confirmation of this before it happens.

Bob, I only stated that I was making an assumption based on my knowledge of
other solar controllers. I didn't know the specifics of Charlie's
controller. IMO if his controller was damaged by starting and stopping the
charger then he probably needed a new/different one anyway.

No assumption needed. When we have several days in a row that are rainy and
overcast (like lately) my 300 watts of solar panels can’t keep up with our
(livaboard) needs and I have to turn on the battery charger. There are no ill
effects since the controllers only allow electrical power flow in one direction.

My natural assumption is no. If you turn on the charger, the solar
controller is probably just going to turn off or reduce output. The only
thing to be concerned about is connecting or disconnecting the battery
while the solar panels are connected. The load on/load off surge is
probably not good for the controller. Many of them have a connection
sequence stated in the owners manual. Usually its battery on first then
solar on. Reverse the sequence to disconnect the controller.

I think adjustment amounts differ from RSA to RSA (Regional Sailing Association
of US Sailing). My RSA's PHRF rules are here: http://rmsail.org/?page_id=215
(scroll down to "Standard Adjustments"). They say -6 for SMW > 180% of J. And
they say only +6 for fixed two-blade prop, whereas NCPHRF gives +12 for that (
http://www.ncphrf.com/Preddy%20additions/Fleet%20Rules/Fleet%20rules%202013.pdf
, Article II.3.D). I don't think I have much choice but to live by the PHRF
rules of my RSA.

Hi Canadians,

I was in the OAKVILLE Ontario Canada West Marine store. I believe that this is
the last store that remains open in Canada.

The manager said that there are new policies in place for Canada:

1. They will not honour sale or clearance prices from the website.

2. Items purchased in a West US store can not be returned for refund or repair
to the Canadian store.

3. There are no longer Canadian flyers in print or email with sale pricing.

Re: Stus-List Transmission repair / rebuild

2016-05-22 Thread John and Maryann Read via CnC-List
Hi Josh

$500 labor

$600 OEM rebuild kit (bearings, seals and such)

Symptoms are when shift lever on transmission is fully engaged but shaft does
not turn as rapidly as should, especially at lower engine speeds. First verify
lever is fully engaged on the transmission and is not hung up in the cabling.
The Kanzaki is a cone gear design which if not correctly engaged the cone
rapidly becomes glazed which prevents proper engagement with the mating gear.
The lever attaches to the cable with a double spring coupling. With the
transmission fully in gear, there should be additional travel in the shift
lever on the steering pedestal, compressing the spring. If not, the cable needs
adjusting. The spring coupling is an annual maintenance item to put a few
drops of oil to ensure free operation.

Another issue is our model has been out of production for some time so a new
replacement is difficult to obtain. There is an “upgrade” model that
supposedly is a direct replacement, but several local marine mechanics do not
think highly of it as the gears are not as durable

Re: Stus-List 30-1 PHRF Rating

2016-05-22 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List
For years. at least on Lake Ontario, the normal size of a symmetrical spinnaker
was 183%. PHRF-LO at the time allowed up to a 183% before a rating adjustment.

You may have 183% spinnakers. I have rarely measured old spinnakers and managed
to get the original dimensions within 1%.

I should have mentioned, my spinnakers' max widths are both "only" 184% of J.

When I bought C&C 30-1 HIN 3007972 it came with two spinnakers of different
material weights. They were handed down with the boat when the PO moved it to
Colorado from Traverse City Michigan (where it spent the first 40 years of its
life). The lighter one was made by Babel & Buchbinder, an obscure loft in
Traverse City that now appears to be a Doyle loft
(http://www.doylesails.com/lofts/traversecity/). I can't find a sailmaker's
label on the heavier one. Both have "ChuteSCOOP" dousing sleeves on them
(http://www.chutescoop.com). That's all I know about them.

I measured their max width how my RSA's PHRF chairman told me to, by folding
each sail in half vertically and measuring from the trailing edges to the
center fold, both at the foot and about a third of the way up. Then I doubled
the measurement and calculated what % of J it represented. If that's not the
right way to measure SMW maybe I can get 6 seconds back in my PHRF rating :)

Cheers,
Randy
