Re: Stus-List Unclogged cockpit drains

2016-09-03 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
I have a section of tygon hose which I can attach to the inside side of the
through hull. Since the hose is clear I can see where the water line is
(about a foot above the floor boards) I have a ram rod dowel which is just
big enough to fit through the valve and long enough to reach from the
inside to the outside. I can ram out anything through the tygon and
through hull without getting any flooding in the boat.

Jeremy,

The seacocks can trap larger items. You may want to use a wooden dowel
from down below to loosen up the clog. If that doesn’t work you may need
to remove the cockpit drain hoses to clear them out.

Just got back from a lovely trip to the gulf islands, crossing the Strait
of Georgia for my first time in our 78 C 34-1

Now cleaning up after the kids made a mess of the cockpit and the drains are
clogged. Originally just one was clogged, but I stuck a small sink snake
in and have clogged the other one too. There were some otters making a mess
of mussel shells one time and I think some went down the drains.

What I have tried:

- blasting water down

- small snake

- shop vac blow and suck (not completely vacuumed sealed into the hose just
held tight to the drain)

- shutting and opening thru hulls - they aren't closing very well and I
hear a sound like mussel shells when I close them

Ideas:

- go for a swim and poke a screw driver in from the water

- close seacock, remove hose and check it. I'm worried it isn't shutting
properly due to the cloggage though and don't want an surprise ingress of
water while I'm contorting myself into the bilge to remove the hose clamps

Any advice?

Thanks,

  Jeremy

I thought about this Tim but I have a GMI 10 on the same backbone as a GNX 20

I have update software for the GNX 20 and still freezes.

Re: Stus-List A4 Slips Out of Gear

2016-09-03 Thread Sylvain Laplante via CnC-List
Right.. any A4 with the Paragon transmission ( so with a reverse band like a
motorcycle wet clutch ) should use a "SG" classification , which means it does
not have the anti-friction additives. Straight 30 oil is also good.
On modern oils the motorcycle JASO MA label has same standard .Moyer also
recommends motorcycle oil like Castrol.

If you are using a modern engine oil with friction modifiers it may
be partially causing the problem.

The Paragon transmission does not shift gears in the traditional sense,
it has a hub that is a permanently engaged planetary gear. For forward
a clutch plate contacts the outer ring gear and planetary carrier, essentially
locking the set up. That transfers the input shaft to the output shaft 1:1.

The transmission is "wet", meaning it is bathed in engine oil. Despite that
the clutch material holds well enough to transfer the torque through using
the original spec engine oil. I think some of the newer oils with the friction
modifiers are too slippery and the clutch does not hold well under load.

I have switched to a Castrol oil, Grand Prix Motorcycle oil. It advertises
itself
as having good wet clutch performance. Previously I was using a car oil with
a SH / SJ rating and friction modifiers. What I noticed was reverse was
soft in engaging. Coming off the dock it would take 2 - 3 boat lengths before
full power developed. After a couple of oil changes with the Grand Prix SG
oil I get great reverse ( and prop walk ) instantly.

On another note, the newest motor oils are API SM. To prevent problems with
catalytic converters the amount of phosphorus is being reduced. On older motors
the phosphorus was critical as an anti-wear additive for simple bearings and
other
high load points.

My Atomic-4 slips out of gear in forward if I open the throttle too much,

that much throttle. But I'm just wondering if this a common and fixable issue,
or a safety feature, or what.

Re: Stus-List A4 Slips Out of Gear

2016-09-03 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
You may find that the engine is moving independent of the shift cable.
With older/softer engine mounts the thrust may be moving the engine
closer/further from the cable. Most cables are attached to the engine so
this doesn't happen but if the cable of mount is broken or failing it may
be causing the problem. Get a partner to create the problem while you are
watching the engine.

It could also be as simple as adjusting the cable.

Stus-List Garmin GMI10 Instrument

2016-09-03 Thread Aaron Rouhi via CnC-List
My GMI10 started to randomly shut off. I can power it back on using the power
button. Not sure what to check. Power supply looks good. Other instruments are
functioning OK. Any suggestions on what to check?
