Re: Stus-List Winch sheeting angles

2018-08-18 Thread Ken Heaton via CnC-List
Line Entry Angle is Important

Winches are further affected by how they are mounted on the boat. The most
important factor is to ensure a proper line entry angle. Lines must lead up
to a winch at about a 5-to-8-degree angle to prevent overrides of the sheet
on the drum. If lead blocks are too high to allow this angle up to the
drum, the winch must be raised slightly, or you will have serious problems
preventing overrides.

Stus-List Winch sheeting angles

2018-08-18 Thread Brent Driedger via CnC-List
Happy Saturday folks.
I recently got my hands on a pair of old Barient 23ST’s for my 27-5. Yes they
are a size or so larger than needed but so what, I’m getting tired of grinding
till I hurt.
I attached one to the deck and went for a sail to test it out. The performance
was stellar but it had a tendency to make a mess unless the sheet was very
tight.
I’m thinking there’s an issue with the angle the sheet enters the winch at.
The 18s these replaced were over an inch closer to the deck and the sheet
entered right where the drum started. Now the line enters about 8 degrees
below that so the first wrap at the bottom tends to double up on itself and
only self corrects if there’s a lot of pressure.
Twice I had some ugly over rides starting from the first wrap at the bottom.
My thoughts are that I will need a beveled base plate to tilt the winch
slightly towards the lead car to cancel out the angle. Unfortunately I cannot
find any suggested entry angle literature on the net.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers.

I have posted this many times but some people can’t or don’t read it.

The Subject – CnC List Digest, Vol XXX, Issue XX is a NO NO.  Read

you are addressing.

Read that last List Digest email.  Notice anything – it was NOT
trimmed and contained at least 8 messages that had already been sent and
probably had nothing to do with the email being sent.  Another reason why
our archive storage fees are going up.

Throttle cable 33-2
We have a 85 33 mark two and ours' was getting tight also, i followed the cable
from under the pedestal and found a crosby" U bolt" clamped around the cable!!
Loosened same and it was so free that it would rebound from full throttle. So
was it installed by a former owner? or C&C ?? May be worth a look.

Bruce, my cylinders are A250 but there are different size A250s. Navtec lists

Stus-List Chesapeake Bay boat crash

2018-08-18 Thread Josh Muckley via CnC-List
Heard this one on the VHF yesterday. Relived to hear, but hard to believe,
no one was seriously injured.

Unfortunately the fishing company's name "Chesapeake Bay Charter Services"
is extremely close to our own business name "Chesapeake Bay Charters". We
started in 2013. They started in 2015. Ugh!

If it's just getting sticky and is not fraying perhaps some lubricant may
help:

Re: Stus-List 37/40 hydraulics

2018-08-18 Thread Dennis C. via CnC-List
In my research on repairing Touche's adjuster, I saw a post attributing
failures of the top seal to UV exposure. My simple solution was a neoprene
washer from Home Depot.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-5-8-in-x-2-in-Black-Neoprene-Washer-815888/204276369

I bought a 1/2 inch and a 5/8 inch for the 1/2 inch rod. The 1/2 inch
sometimes rode up when the adjuster was eased so I settled on the 5/8 inch.

As for the repair, I went with Stix N Rig'n out of Kemah, TX. Good, quick
service. I had contacted Lew Townsend but he was leaving on a 3 week
cruise and couldn't fix it until after. To his credit Lew texted me on his
return to see if I still needed the repair.

Re: Stus-List 37/40 hydraulics

2018-08-18 Thread Bruce Whitmore via CnC-List
Hello all,
I went looking at the seals noted below, and they appear to be much larger than
the seals on my hydraulic backstay adjusters.  Would anyone know the part
numbers for the smaller version adjusters that are on the later boats?  Mine is
a 1994 37/40+.

I thoroughly understand all of the recommendations to have the adjusters
professionally repaired, but I'm big into self-sufficiency, and I'd rather try
it first and see how it turns out.  I can always go the professional route if I
don't get it right...
Thanks!  Bruce Whitmore

 Subject: Stus-List 37/40 hydraulics

After all the talk about hydraulics last week I noticed both my backstay
cylinders are leaking a little around the top seal. I have one cylinder working
harder than the other too which is a problem. I put together the parts needed
to rebuild them and thought someone may benefit from knowing the parts
required. The backstay cylinders aren’t difficult. The boom vang cylinder is
spring loaded and I will probably pay a shop when it needs a rebuild. (and I
will warn them it’s spring loaded)
The parts come from Hercules and this is for 1 cylinder.
1-P187-00.937-312B (large seal)1-ST-50 (sweep)1-P187-00.500 (small
seal)2-568-215 (o-ring)
A couple of things I found useful last time was wrapping the shaft threads with
electrical tape to ease sliding the new seals on and I made up a sacrificial
stainless steel wire wrapped hose for the boom vang so I didn’t have to replace
and fish a new 20+ foot hose under the ceiling liner when the sun damages the
hose enough to leak. Navtec has a support section on their web page that
details how to check and set relief valve pressures which should help those of
you worried about over pressure of your backstay and transom hardware.
