Use the pinless contact, highest sensitivity, and don't worry about the

conductive like backing plates or anti-fouling paint etc. I found it very
useful.

Canadian tire also sells one if you are in Canada.

Again … set to highest sensitivity (it has settings for various surface types)
and just look at the relative numbers.

My repair guru uses a Skipper plus. I had so many issues, I bought one for
myself. It works well, but they are expensive. When using one, avoid sliding
it on the surface. It is not a stud finder. You need to lift it up, set it
down, repeat.

First, an interesting article on moisture meters:

http://www.pcmarinesurveys.com/Moisture%20meter%20mythology.htm

Second, piggybacking on Jeffrey's post, I have a Klein ET140

https://www.amazon.com/Klein-Tools-ET140-Non-Destructive-Detection/dp/B07SZX8QXH

I have been using it extensively the past few weeks. It seems to work
well. (Our house flooded after getting 12 inches of rain in 2 hours last
month. We had 16 inches of water in the house. The Admiral and I had been
talking about some major renovations. Now we're doing them. It's really
curtailed my sailing this summer.)

Anyway, the Klein is not calibrated for fiberglass. However, if you are
just looking for relative readings, it should work okay.

Stus-List Re: moisture meter

2021-06-18 Thread Matthew via CnC-List
Good article. I would add that my expensive “Skipper Plus” also has different
settings, and it uses “green,” “yellow,” and “red” ranges. Some wood, like the
thick pine Bruckmann used for stringers on my boat, is naturally moist enough
to get into the upper end of the yellow range. My stringer wood is fine, but
now I know. In addition, I found out that Bruckmann occasionally used staples
to hold coring in place – a staple puts you immediately in the red range.
Different glass thickness can affect accuracy. So using the meter requires
experience, and it’s a bit of an art. That said, once we figured out the
anomalies, the meter was very helpful in identifying problem areas (it was
usually correct), and was especially helpful in letting us know when a wet core
area was sufficiently dry to epoxy and move on. Maybe Ryobi’s unit can do the
same thing for a lot less money, but I like the color-coded visual.
