Printed me a copy of Stu's Spring checklist already. It's a big help. Thanks,
Stu

Bought new flares at Walmart. Mine expired 2020. New ones are only good for
three years.

I second the Fisheries Supply recommendation. I like their customer service and
as a long term customer get a good discount. Years ago I become acquainted with
the owners, the Sutter family as Fisheries and my manufacturing company shared
a CPA. Carl Sutter is an accomplished sailor and a supporter of sailing
programs.

Back in the early 90’s I was doing foredeck duties on a Santa Cruz 50. One of
the crew worked at Fisheries. On the first race of a 3 day regatta one of the
primary winches failed. (It’s an exciting moment to see the winch handle
rotating backwards under load.)

The Fisheries guy called the store and arranged for a new winch to be run over
to Shilshole Bay Marina. We got it installed fast enough to only miss 1 of 3
buoy races that day.

Spring is here and it will soon be sailing season (well for some
people).  Don't forget to get your copy of the Spring Checklist - it is
a lot easier than trying to remember.

Wholesale Marine out of Cincinnati has some good prices. I also printed Harken
items at West Marine and Larson Marine in Waukegan IL and Larson was
substantially cheaper across the board. Not what I was expecting but if you are
on the western shore of Lake Michigan, Larson is worth a look.

Hey Don,

Thanks for the reminder. I have a few hundred dollars of stuff in my Defender
cart and I'll complete the purchase soon. I agree, the discount doesn't seem
to be as deep. I had SS fittings selected that I can find cheaper on the
interweb, so I will buy them that way. I think the discount average is 5% to
10% but the savings on big items was worth it.

West Marine: I only buy there as a last resort. They don't stock as well as
in the past. And the local store doesn't answer the phone. I once was doing a
project and needed a certain color paint, and the Glenn Burnie store had a
recording answer the phone. I drove the ten miles and found they were out what
I needed. There were two cashiers doing nothing but cleaning the counter and
joking with each other, no customers in sight, so I called the store phone
number and sure enough I got the same message, "Due to an unexpected high
volume of customers, our assosiates are too busy to answer the phone. Please
try again later." I put it on speaker for the cashiers to hear and told them
they could have saved me a trip but their service stunk and walked out. I've
also found them closing and locking the store before their posted hours. Very
poor customer service this winter.
