Stus-List awlgrip

2020-04-22 Thread Al Goodman via CnC-List
I hope I didn't do this incorrectly. I am looking for a touchup kit for
awlgrip, but have not been able to locate any from any of the standard boat
supply houses(west marine, defender, etc) I am looking for marlin blue
g5011. I don't need a quart of this stuff only like a small amount. Any
help would be greatly appreciated. Once again apologies if this was done
incorrectly.

Hello Edd from snowy Michigan. I added a Navpod to my helm station last
year. Also installed new (taller) guard, chrome binnacle support/spreader,
primed and painted the old black, nasty faded pedestal white, and added new
decals...along with rebuilding the brake and lubing up the steering chain
and cables/pulleys.
There were two grommeted enter/exit holes in the front of the binnacle where
I snaked the wires from my Ray Axiom9 and auto pilot control head through
the guard, down to just below the compass, to exit the guard tube and into
the binnacle. From there, running the wires down the binnacle and into the
port aft locker was easy.
I also really needed a compact drink holder in front of the helm, so I made
one out of PVC board and old smoked plexiglass left over from changing out
the cabin sidelights. The drink holder effectively hides the wires with a
carefully field-engineered-placed receiver for my cockpit table (see where
the two horizontal boards are close together-the wires are tucked in
between), and also holds a cellphone or two along with up to 4 cold
beverages. (Bell's Oberon is the official boat beer of the summer;-).
Lastly, I velcro-ed the winch handle pockets to the sides. Unobtrusive,
compact and functional. We like it, at least. I hope this pic works:

Chuck,

Very nice setup! I already have everything coming out of the binnacle, so I
may do exactly the same thing.

What is this ?snow? thing you speak of? I think I remember something call
snow from long ago. In the beforetime.

All the best,

Edd

Stus-List heavy weather trim

2019-06-18 Thread Al Goodman via CnC-List
Just finished a race where the winds were over 30, I had one reef in place
and unfurled my jib to about 1/3. Had great control the weather helm was
nonexistent.

Yesterday we experienced our first heavy weather in our new 35 mk2, and in
spite of only being able to put one reef in the main, she handled the
sustained 35 knot winds closehauled for over two hours with minimal drama
(according to the graph at Trial Island that I checked this morning). A few
breaking waves pushed the bow over, before I started steering into them and
the wind to prevent being knocked down too far. I didn't like seeing the
main flogging so much, but going forward to add a second reef (no line was
in place) was an option I quickly discarded as my wife was not confident
taking the helm. (although she did a few times when I had to add the first
reef around 20 knots, and tighten the dinghy lashing on the foredeck).

I suspect she would have been much easier to handle with a double reefed
main and maybe part of the inner foresail unfurled. I considered unfurling a
sliver of the foresail but decided to just keep feathering the main and also
had the motor going the while time to help plow through the waves.
This is one instance where having extra engine power on tap is nice.

I'm interested in what tactics work best for sail setup when winds increase
to 25+, as these conditions are not unusual around here, and I want to be
more prepared next time. We had a bit of water in the bilge, but a 2 liter
plastic water jug broke, so it's hard to tell how much was from that, and
how much from other sources. I know that some will have come down the
windlass. My job of cleaning the decks after 10 days of cruising is now
done... just need to spray the salt off :)

In those conditions, you should be good with just a small jib and no main.
That's a lot of breeze. I bet you were kind of lonely out there!

Stus-List cutlass bearing

2016-03-30 Thread Al Goodman via CnC-List
I just did this it took a total of about 3 hrs to take the old one out and
put the new one in. If the yard will let you use the cutlass bearing puller
it's a piece of cake.

Stus-List harken failure

2015-09-08 Thread Al Goodman via CnC-List
You can get replacement torlon balls. This happened to me last season.
There are 96 balls in the top swivel. I would not recommend putting them
back in while the headstay is still attached. I took me less than 5 minutes
to replace the balls while it was off the boat. I used shaving cream to
hold the balls in place and then rinsed the swivel once everything was back
together.

Stus-List main sail

I have converted my main sail to the strong system. It has proven to be
well worth it. It is now very easy to raise and lower the track.
