Stus-List Re: Two new recommendations - Spray lube & Deck delamination

2022-04-20 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I am loath to recommend any product but I have had too much success with
this to not brag about it. It has worked on aluminum parts and has lasted
for several years. I sprayed my binnacle with black FlexSeal spray. It
leaves a "crepe" finish that looks like a factory finish. It is not
designed as a paint and you have to be very careful not to spray too close
or too fast. It builds milage rapidly. I did this over three years ago and
it still looks as good as the day I did it. I prepped the surface well and
applied an etching primer. I sprayed two cheap aluminum winch handles and
didn't prep as carefully and they have held. They haven't chipped and there
has been no sign of corrosion getting under the finish. I believe the
virtue of the material is that it has great adhesion and a lot of milage,
the seawater just cannot get to the substrate. A friend of mine sprayed the
aluminum piping on a tuna tower on his power boat with equal success. He
was very careful spraying it and it came out perfect. I had an inflatable
dinghy and the rubber handles peeled off. I tried the
manufacturer prescribed glue (failed miserably) and 5200 and other
adhesives. Flex glue bonded beyond satisfaction. I tried to peel one off
and couldn't do it. I never had faith in the TV advertised products but
the Flexseal has proven to me to be fantastic. I am going to spray my
aluminum stanchion bases next.

I am replacing the old (but very Bright) spreader lights on my C 41. With
all the new technology advances, do any of you have a graciously accepted
recommendation on a particular light. I did enjoy the very bright lights

offer as bright illumination. If any one would like my existing lights,

2021-09-21 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I have a 1984 41 and I love it. The hull is not a tortured IOR shape. It is
fairly clean. She moves through the water very cleanly. She sails well in
light or heavy air. She is perfectly balanced. She will sail upwind with
the wheel brake on and sail like on an auto pilot. The Dollar/Boatspeed
ratio is very high. I love the interior. Granted, she doesn't have as much
room as a modern 41 foot boat but it is well laid out and proportioned
well. I love the Nav Station/Office. I put plywood "fillers" in the cockpit
to extend the seating for cruising. I wouldn't cruise without them. I
cannot cruise long distances in a slow boat or one that cannot go
upwind. The 41 suits my purposes just fine.

Stus-List Flex Seal and Ultra High-Bond Double Stick Tape

2020-09-02 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
After following the explicit directions and buying the required materials,
I still had a leak in my forward hatch. I do believe I can attribute the
failure to the fact it was a Bomar Hatch with on 3/16" lens. The top part
of the hatch has two "stringers that offer the actual support of weight on
the hatch. I think the thin plastic flexed enough to break the seal. I
wonder if it was a factory installed hatch. At any rate, I tried something
different. I used Ultra High Bond double Stick tape under the plastic. I
set the plastic in place then took a razor knife to trim the margin the
extended outside the lens perimeter and caulked that with the Sikaflex
material. I shaped the sikaflex so it was convex above the plastic and
hatch frame. I also taped so the Sikaflex extended out onto the plastic and
the frame. I think it is going to work. The lens is secured much more that
the adhesion of the Sikaflex/primer method I used the first time. If I had
to do it over again, I would buy a new hatch.

Also, I am going to tell you a crazy method of refinishing my binnacle and
hatch frame. About 5 years ago, I bough two cheap winch handles that were
powder coated. The powder coating came off immediately. I deoxidized the
handles and sprayed them with black Flex Seal. I used those
handles mostly every day (sailing charter business) and after 5 years, they
still looked good. I stripped my binacle and hatch, deoxidized and primed
them (I didn't prime the winch handles) and coated them with black Flex
Seal. It looks really good with the crepe finish it had oroginally. I will
report if I start seeing a problem. The Flex Seal isn't designed as a
finish so you have to spray slowly and far away to get a nice finish
without running.

Re: Stus-List Rob Ball comment on 41 "robustness"

2020-06-09 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I have driven our 41 mercilessly. Not because I want to abuse the boat, she
seems to thrive in it. She just feels very tough. We have no creaks or
groans except for the forward cabin door that came loose because of the
motion. The 41 is an impressive design.

Stus-List Loss of coolant

2020-05-13 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
My Yanmar 3JH4E has been slowly leaking coolant. I motored for 14 hours and
it lost 5mm of depth in the reservoir. The reservoir is approximately 4"
DIA. I checked thoroughly for visible signs of leaking and found none. Has
anyone had this experience?

Re: Stus-List Deck Paining

2019-12-01 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I just finished the deck using Kiwi Grip. I am impressed to say the least.
I painted the cockpit sole several months ago as a test. It held up
perfectly and did not seem to stain any worse than other surfaces. It is
ultra easy to apply. It is an Acrylic (or at least water based) and cleans
up easily. It bonds extremely well. I am the worlds worse painter and got
small spatter drops from rolling the roller too fast. It is extremely
difficult to remove the drops. Also, I have had no lifting on any area. You
can control how aggressive you want the skid pattern by various techniques.
It works best on a shady day. In hot sun, it dries too quickly. Though I
was compelled to paint most of it in those conditions, it still looks
great. A perfectionist painter would be able to apply a factory-like
finish.

Stus-List Coolant Leak

2019-11-11 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
My Yanmar 3JH4E has a slow coolant leak. It is not getting into the oil and
no visible external leaks can be detected.I remember a post several months
ago about a similar situation but I could not find it. I believe it was
about a seal somewhere in the cooling system that commonly begins to leak.
I appreciate any advice on this.

Stus-List C 41 Cockpit Modification for cruising

2019-09-30 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I made a prototype of these "cockpit filler" to make the cockpit more
suitable for the distance sailing were going to do. The helm seat flips up
for use or under for a flat seat to lay on. There is stowage underneath for
Jerry Jugs. I am going to see if there is room for the life raft. This is a
plywood mock-up but usable. I may build on out of Starboard plastic. It
turns the cockpit into a comfortable place to stretch out. I am stoked with
this. The only disadvantage is that you need to step up onto the extension
to access the helm station but that is no big deal to us.

I made it clear under a 65.5 clearance with about 1 foot (estimate) of
instruments above the masthead. It appeared there was a decent margin of
clearance. We have the triple spreader rig.

Stus-List Transducer Placement Cored Hulls

2019-05-21 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I placed a transducer on our 41 just behind the keel sump on the
centerline. It is solid glass there as the core does not extend to the
centerline. The overlaps of layers of cloth provide the required thickness.
I would assume the other models are built in a similar manner. Our CHIRP
sonar/depth sounder works great there.

Re: Stus-List CnC-List Digest, Vol 158, Issue 28

2019-03-15 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
Regarding the questions on rudder quadrants, I had slack in the steering of
our C 41 (WeGo). I climbed into the mouse hole and barely got to the
adjustment nuts. I tightened a bit, checked it, tightened, checked it... it
didn't improve the situation. What created almost all of the slack was the
condition that the keyway was not a square section but slightly less on one
side. It appeared to be square but was just enough less to allow the wheel
to rotate on the shaft a considerable amount if the keyway was installed
with the narrow side in the cut. I hope this saves someone a trip through
the mousehole.

Stus-List Mold prevention

2018-09-30 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I live in Costa Rica and mold is a always an issue. I have great luck using
an Ozone Generator. It cost about $40 on Ebay and I used it the of this
entirety of this rainy season. About once a week, I run it for about 30
minutes. I put it in different places on the boat each time to help
distribute the ozone. It It is said that ozone is damaging to plastic and
rubber but I have seen no perceptible destruction. There is a spray liquid
called Hapric that is sold down here. I don't know if it is available in
the states but it removes mold/mildew instantly. You need gloves and a mask
to use it.

What I mean by "bump the starter" is to turn the engine over but not enough
to start it it. After I accomplish that, the dipstick reads the oil level
correctly. It was very worrisome at first but I know the oil is in there as
I filled it up myself. I did a 1500 nm trip and the engine did great.
Thanks!

Also, I have a light blue (not much) smoke in operation. I added the proper
amount of "Gumount" fuel additive and it stops. I wonder if that is telling
me anything? I just bought the boat in May and sailed it to Tampa Bay
using the engine quite a bit and she did great.

Thanks for that! I bet a dollar I have Smoke White. It could definitely be
described as that. I will let you know how it turns out.

2018-06-23 Thread Glenn Henderson via CnC-List
I just bought a 1984 C 41 sailed it from Rhode Island to Tampa Bay. I
really enjoy sailing this boat.

It has several gel-cot cracks radiating from the highly loaded hardware. I
am going to try the MagicEzy product to repair these. Assuming C used the
same deck gelcoat color on all boats, does anyone know which of the white
colors they offer more closely matches the C color?

Thanks,
