Stus-List Farewell to our C

2020-06-03 Thread Wally Kowal via CnC-List
They say the two happiest days for a sailor are the day they buy their boat
and the day they sell their boat. I am torn today as we say goodby to
Whistler II, our C 30 ‘73 after 26 years.

My wife and I raised our two boys aboard and had great sailing adventures
and serene evenings at anchor all around Lake Ontario and Georgian Bay.
We’ve retired to idyllic Niagara-on-the-Lake and the boat to-do list has
exceeded my energy and interest. It’s time for a younger and more
enthusiastic owner to enjoy her.

To you, from failing hands we pass the torch, be yours to hold on high.

I'm going to miss you listers and thanks, Stu, for all the work.

C’s rule!

Wally.

Re: Stus-List Headsail only in strong winds astern

2019-03-20 Thread Wally Kowal via CnC-List
Robert,

That looked like tons of fun.

I'm a lucky man because my wife enjoys putting the rail in the water. I'm
usually the one worrying because she has no regard for the forces
involved. She broke the undersized mainsheet shackle on our first solo
sail because the PO never pushed the boat as hard as she did.

We once did a 35+ knots downwind run under reefed jib across Humber Bay in
Toronto (notorious for its waves in wind) with our one-year old son packed
in pillows in the v-berth. The marine police came out to see who was silly
enough to be out sailing during a small craft warning.

It's great that your guests enjoyed the sail. Most non-sailors get
intimidated when things get tippy.

Wally.

Whistler II built 6/73 hull #190 (it's "Whistler II" because Stu already had
"Whistler")
On the hard in Penetanguishene, ON
We're probably going to sell her next year.  Structurally and mechanically
sound but looking a bit worse for wear.  My son is re-building the Atomic IV
this fall for his advanced automotive shop class term project.

Stus-List Rebuild suggestions for Atomic IV

2015-10-10 Thread Wally Kowal via CnC-List
We are pulling the A4 from our C 30 '73 tomorrow and my son is going to work
on it over the winter for his term project in auto shop class.
The motor gets light use in fresh water so I do not want to go with electronic
ignition or other bells and whistles.  The boat has little residual value
despite the fact that it is structurally solid and a hell of a lot of fun to
sail and cruise in, so I do not want to invest too much in the rebuild.
What do you suggest replacing on it while we have it out?

Re: Stus-List Folding/feathering Props

2015-02-12 Thread Wally Kowal via CnC-List
Alan,
I have a two-blade Gori that I took off our 30 Mk 1 years ago that you can get
at a good price.  We don't race and it folded once too often while my wife was
docking.
It is sized for an Atomic 4.  I have no idea where it is but I can look for it
if you are interested.
We had an interesting situation with it.  We were leaving NOTL Yacht Club,
motoring over the Niagara River bar into a heavy north wind which created VERY
tall waves, and every time the boat tipped over the top of a particularly large
wave, the prop would leave the water and fold instantly.  We had to put the
transmission in neutral then shift back into forward to re-open the prop.
It took a few minutes of panic to figure out what was happening.
