Re: Stus-List Rudder repair?

2018-07-30 Thread jcn--- via CnC-List
Dave
I have a C 29 Mk2 where the previous owner had hit rocks hard and tore the
bottom 10 inches off the rudder and bent the rudder post backward and to port.
There was also some damage to the bottom of the keel. I replaced the bent
rudder shaft with a new one made from 316 stainless as part of a rudder
rebuild. Stainless work hardens if bent and while it can be straightened you
are essentially cold working it again to go the other way to straighten and I
would be concerned with cracking and overall loss of strength. If you added
the required amount of heat to try to anneal to compensate you would like
damage the fiberglass rudder and foam core as the anneal temperature for
stainless is high. If you are operating in a salt water environment it is also
more severe and higher risk of stress corrosion cracking and thus the reason
316 stainless is used vs 304 in marine applications. Marine engineers
designed the rudder post to bend if hit hard enough once and thus not rip open
the bottom of your boat. I'm not sure they intended it to get straightened and
take the same hit a second time and not break off completely or worse. My
recommendation is get a new rudder, or at minimum get a new post and have the
rudder rebuilt as there is likely more damage you don't see inside or at least
the foam core had been compromised by water getting in which was the case with
my rudder.Good luck.

I too have a C 35-1 with old style aluminum windows that need gaskets
replaced. First dibs to Dennis of course on the extra 80ft you have as he
started this chat, but I would be interested in buying some from you. My
email is j...@mymts.net if you want to email directly. Again first dibs to
Dennis but if you still have some left let me know.

Almost time to replace the lenses in Touche's old style aluminum frame
portlights. The "D" shape EDPM inner seal is easy to find at big box
 stores.

However, I can only find the gray outer gasket at Holland Marine for
$5/foot. Gaskets for newer hatches at hatchmasters.com (Select Plastics
site) are in the same price range. Internet search reveals some that are
 close but not exact.

I can reuse the old gasket and have some old gasket if need be. However,
I'd like to find another source for the gasket at a reasonable price.

Some on the list claim it's a readily available storm door or window
gasket or such. I've taken a sample of the gasket to several glass shops
and door repair places in my area with no luck at all.

Can anybody find a manufacturer, supplier or part number for the exact
replacement gasket? Has anybody found a similar gasket that worked? If
so, what is part number? There's a lot of us that would like that
 information.

Re: Stus-List Tell me about the 35 MKIII-CB

2018-01-16 Thread jcn--- via CnC-List
Sean
I sailed an O'Day with the shoal draft center board for many years and loved
the boat as it removes a lot of anxiety and stress to pull up the board when in
shallow water or uncertain areas close to shore or when anchoring. Many times
have nosed up to the rocks and tied on shore with an anchor off the stern.
You do lose some ability to point close to the wind or we did on the O'Day.
Had her many times with triple reef main and storm jib so no issues in a blow.
You should replace the centerboard pennant line every 5 years but other than
that no issues. So if you sail in shallow waters or places with shallow
anchorage the CB boat would fit the bill. I now sail both a C 35 mk1 and a
C 29 mk 2 (please don't ask why two boats) and love the C's, their
handling, speed, ability to point. I do however have 'rock and anything else
that may be hard below the surface' anxiety even with a depth sounder and when
I get close to shore or island or when anchoring that anxiety only goes up and
I long for the CB pennant to pull up the board for peace of mind. So there is
always a compromise. Pick the boat that best suits where and how you plan to
sail and enjoy.
Cheers
James
