I have two spare (non-ST) 28's that are currently being used as paper weights.
They were cleaned and greased after being taken out of service. Low-ball

Dennis, I would definitely be interested in the Barient 28 to replace one

I replaced the original Barients (I can't remember, I think they were 25's)
with Lewmar ST48's. If I could have got the same kind of deal on 52's I
would have done it. I wouldn't be happy with 44's.

My Barient catalogue shows the 28+ as 42.6:1 with a 10" handle, not sure if
it's exactly the same winch as the 28.

Defender has a spring sale every year in march I believe. Its like a mini bat
show. LewMar was offering some really good deals last year. If I recall it
was like half off MSRP.

If you aren't in any great hurry but, want them fir this year you may want to
wait and see the prices at the spring sale.

Thank you thank you thank you for all the great advice, suggestions and
cautionary tales. I've got a bit more homework to do but I like the idea of
winch pads if necessary. (I've seen them for ages, why didn't I think of
that?!). Thx for the polishing suggestions too, Dennis. Aside from waxing and
buffing, haven't messed with the gel coat. Will post a pic of finished work
whenever that great day arrives.
And now... Aside from the fall boat show discounts, is there any other time of
year that is good for discounts. Defender looks like the best prices right
now.

Re: Stus-List Winch replacement, holes, etc.

2013-12-28 Thread Chuck S
Read somewhere that the Barient model number relates to a designed line load.
28 equates to 2800# line load. The winches were improved over time (80's) with
better roller bearings and made stronger so that the load ratings became higher
than their model number. Barient's catalog of 1986 is on Stu's website, with a
spreadsheet showing the gear ratios of the whole line.
The Barient 28 has 42.6 to 1 power ratio w a 10" handle so seems equivalent to
a Lewmar 43 if there was one.
The Barient 36 has a power ratio of 48 to 1, closer to a Lewmar 50.

Looked like Barient 27 or Lewmar 40 was recommended for a 33 to 36 ft boat.

Subject: Stus-List Winch replacement, holes, etc.

Defender looks like the best prices right now.
Cheers,
