Re: Stus-List A leak in the water system
Hi, I tried a few methods to repair water tanks, which failed miserably, before trying hot air welding. Plastic welding is best. I have repaired the 2 tanks one of which had a creak over 2 ft long(water would gush out as soon as it was put in). It has been nearly two years since the weld repair, and I have had no issues. This includes a few 200 NM trips offshore beating into 6-8ft seas. I was able to borrow a hot air welder and purchased package of 1/8" LDPE welding rods from Grainger Supply. Here is a write up of my tank repair work a while back at: http://svjohannarose.blogspot.com/search/label/WaterTankRepair <http://svjohannarose.blogspot.com/search/label/WaterTankRepair> - Paul E. 1981 C&C 38 Landfall S/V Johanna Rose Carrabelle, FL http://svjohannarose.blogspot.com/ > On Mar 6, 2017, at 10:37 PM, cnc-list-requ...@cnc-list.com wrote: > > Date: Mon, 6 Mar 2017 20:55:48 -0500 > From: Steve Thomas mailto:sthom...@bellnet.ca>> > To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com <mailto:cnc-list@cnc-list.com> > Subject: Re: Stus-List A leak in the water system > Message-ID: <20170306205548.BJTKY.9988.root@toroondcmxzfep03> > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=utf-8 > > The water tanks on my C&C36 both leak at cracks that have formed radial to > the inspection ports. 3 out of 4 ports have leaks. I used this when I replaced the inspection port in my holding tank. 2 seasons and so far so good. http://www.tapplastics.com/product/repair_products/plastic_adhesives/tap_poly_weld_adhesive/435 I've also heard that with the same preparation the west systems g/flex works just as well. For cracks you'll probably want to relieve the stress by drilling a small hole at the end of the crack. Re: Stus-List A leak in the water system
I found that these white connectors on grey tubing over time can break and leak. I replaced a couple after I managed to unload most of the fresh water tank into the bilge (after leaving the battery switch on and the fresh water pump switch on, as well). If I may suggest, check all connectors (sorry, I know it is not a simple or quick job). If you cannot find the source of leaking, you may either add food colouring to the water (you need a lot to show) or use water soluble markers and make lines under the connectors on the hull. Leaking water will cut the drawn line. Try Ronco Plastics at http://ronco-plastics.com . Download the marine tanks catalog to find an extensive list of tank sizes and shapes. They had the unique forward holding tank for my C&C 34, and I just replaced a water tank for my 42 (1976) with an identical tank. They are relatively fast and easy to work with. The prices aren't bad, but the shipping cost hurts. -Original Message- From: Steve Thomas via CnC-List Sent: Monday, March 06, 2017 8:55 PM To: cnc-list@cnc-list.com Cc: Steve Thomas Subject: Re: Stus-List A leak in the water system The water tanks on my C&C36 both leak at cracks that have formed radial to the inspection ports. 3 out of 4 ports have leaks. I've heard that Kraco still has many old molds and can fabricate new tanks. Approximately 10 years ago I was able to get a new tank for under the Vee berth for my 1982 C&C 32 Neil Andersen Auburn, NYFoxfire On Mon, Mar 6, 2017 at 8:56 PM -0500, "Steve Thomas via CnC-List" wrote: The water tanks on my C&C36 both leak at cracks that have formed radial to the inspection ports. 3 out of 4 ports have leaks. Took me two years to figure out the hot water heater emergency valve was bad. Otherwise add red food color to the tank and try to figure out where the leak is. Stus-List A leak in the water system
I noticed recently that my water system has a leak in it somewhere. I don't use internal water too often, so I'm not sure when or how it started. When I went to fill the tank yesterday, I noticed that the water level dropped quickly in the tube and I started getting water in the bilge. I was short on time, so I didn't have a chance to try to find the source of the problem. Just thought I'd start by asking whether there's a usual culprit when this occurs - a place to check first - and if any one has suggestions as to how best to diagnose where the leak is coming from.
