Gardiner's Bay and Shelter Island (eastern LI) have top notch gunkholing.
You can basically anchor anywhere as the holding is primarily thick mud.

To anchor:
Pipe's Cove (west of Greenport)
Coecles Harbor (east side Shelter island)
West Neck Harbor (SW side Shelter island)
Three Mile Harbor (S Gardiner's Bay/east Hampton)
Sag Harbor (lots of super yachts)

To moor:
Deering Harbor (N Shelter island)
Coecles Harbor (Rams Head Inn or Coecles Marina)
Sag Harbor (inner harbor)

All of these spots have pretty quick dinghy access or launch to town.

In Old Saybrook, CT, you can grab a free mooring at North Cove for up to 72
hours and enjoy a short walk to main street. Stop by and say hi to Freight
Train if you do.

I would skip Port Jefferson unless you enjoy tourists, expensive
restaurants, and the odor of refuse.

We loved the Thimbles when last there, which was a long time ago. There was a 
barge selling lobster dinners with a delivery boat. My brother and I got 
hassled about some kind of Connecticut boating license while taking the dinghy 
into town. Seems the local water cops didn’t think a 10 and 13 year old should 
be operating a boat, but we kept pointing at the MARLYLAND registration and 
told the cops that Maryland had no such rules and this was a Maryland boat so 
go away. That actually worked, but then the dinghy split a seam some distance 
on and we covered the last part of the trip with a half-inflated dinghy.

Once in town we somehow convinced a local to rent us a wood rowboat for $10, 
which was the extent of my cash. Our parents were more than surprised when we 
returned to the Thimble Islands in a different boat than we left in! Good Times 


Later I earned a lot of respect from my brother when a Hobie Cat sailed by 3  
bikini girls wanted to tie up and eat lunch. They were still there when 
everyone else got back from town to return the rowboat and patch up the 
inflatable. C were getting all the best girls then and still do 

 

*   Just recently we were in Mystic. It very much is the Saint Michael’s of 
Long Island Sound (or vice versa), well worth seeing for the boats and shopping 
too if you are so inclined. Mystic Pizza is cool, but pizza can only be so 
good, it isn’t like 20 times better than non-movie pizza.

The Thimbles in Branford, CT are all privately owned so no going ashore, and 
the current can be strong when the tides change, causing boats and anchor rodes 
to become entangled.  A kellet or weight to keep your rode below keel and 
rudder can help.   

 

North of Charles Island in Milford, CT is a nice anchorage.  There are a couple 
marinas up in Milford if you want to tie up, go to shops, etc.   Have never 
been. 

 

North of Northport – Long Island  [just south of the 4 stacks] is also a nice 
anchorage, long trip in though fairly well protected.  

 

Oyster Bay is another good spot.  Can anchor, grab a town mooring, or stop at 
Seawanhaka Corinthian YC if you have reciprocal.  Sagamore Hill [Teddy 
Roosevelt’s home] is on top of the eastern shore of Oyster Bay.  Believe best 
access is in to the Oyster Bay marina in town a take a taxi / uber.  West 
Harbor is shallow: 7’ – 8’.  I draw 7’ so never been in there.  

 

September is the best month for LIS so your timing is perfect.

Hey Joel, I think the Thimble Islands on the CT coast are pretty neat. We also 
loved going up to Essex on the CT river. The Griswold Inn there has a fantastic 
sea shanty night.  Northport is a nice little town. Oyster bay has a couple 
nice anchorages. Ziegler's Cove is a pretty anchorage as well.

The best sandwich shop in the world (IMHO) is in Sag Harbor right near the 
bridge and marina: Espresso.  Great place to visit if you like looking at 
Yachts and fancy cars.  We have been making annual trips there for for 
breakfast, lunch or dinner for 20+ years.  I guess I am going to have to 
compare the one on Shelter Island (Maria’s Kitchen? Vine St. Cafe?) when we are 
there next month.  Last time we were in Sag Harbor they were greatly expanding 
the slip space controlled by the harbormaster, so there should be a lot more 
flexibility if you want a slip (moorings as well and anchorage outside the 
harbor).  Depending on your timing, the New London Maritime Festival is coming 
up Sept 9-10 (https://visitnewlondon.org/ct-maritime-heritage-festival/).  Dave

You guys are the best!

We stay at Mystic Seaport when in Mystic.  Not the cheapest, but its one of
our favorite spots despite having to deal with the bridges.  I'll check out
the recommendations so we have some options.

enough time.  We also skipped over to shelter island and happened to catch the 
whaling days celebration.  It was fun.  There is an awesome sandwich shop in

Hi Joel- I second most of those suggestions with some amendments.  Watch Hill 
is very nice but it is a very long motor through a narrow winding passage to 
get there. You have to be very careful navigating it.  Lovely spot once you do. 
 I would do that only if time is not an issue.  If you are thinking of going up 
the CT river, Hamburg Cove is reputed to be one of the nicest spots on the CT 
coast.   I have only been there by bicycle, but it is a great biking area and 
looks lovely.  Depending on your timing, North Cove near the entrance to the CT 
River in Old Saybrook is a nice spot where you can pick up any free mooring.  
Not much nearby, however, but great people at North Cove YC if you have 
privileges.   Of course, I have to suggest New London for its cheap moorings 
and great people at TYC, good anchorages nearby, as well as Coast Guard square 
rigger, periodic submarines, good restaurants and lively music and art scene.  
Down side is ferry wakes from 6AM until midnight.  Dave

Joel,

Having lived most of my life sailing Long Island Sound, I can share a few 
recommendations:

Port Jefferson is a great town with wonderful shops and restaurants. Also easy 
to get in and out of the harbor. 

Oyster Bay is very protected, but it takes some to get in there. Another great 
town and Canterbury Ales was a favorite restaurant of mine. 

On the CT shore, Cedar Island Marina in Clinton is a nice spot with a great 
restaurant, pool, marine store, laundry, etc. They also have a shuttle to the 
outlet mall. 

Greenwich is nice stop, but so close to Port Washington, that you may want to 
just go the rest. If you do hit Greenwich, Indian Harbor YC is a nice club and 
it’s a short walk into town. 

Places to avoid: Bridgeport (industrial), Huntington (very hot - no wind), and 
Stamford (kinda run down.)

So, for Mystic, I would go from Mystic to Clinton, from Clinton to Port Jeff, 
from Port Jeff to Oyster Bay, then Oyster Bay to Port Washington.
