Re: Stus-List best folding prop for 30 MK1 w/ A4

Good advice on Moyer Marine, but I would also talk to the prospective suppliers
about it. When I bought mine last year, I found all of the distributors that
responded to my inquiry to be very helpful about recommending the right size
for my boat and primary uses. For Gori, I would recommend contacting Geoff
Prior at AB Marine in Rhode Island, their US distributor. He spent quite a bit
of time patiently walking me through my options.

Joe,
I would recommend that you take a look at the forums at www.moyermarine.com.
You will find lots of discussion about the best prop for the direct drive
A4. Short answer is that 11.5x8 looks like too much pitch to me.

I received the blessing from the Admiral to equip Zia with a folding prop
this season. I have been looking at our options and the Gori 2 blade geared
prop 11.5 X 8 looks like it would do the job.

Before I pull the trigger on this, I would like to check with the list for
opinions/experiences on brands, model etc.

Currently we have a 2 blade fixed.

Thanks a million.

It stops and reverses quickly - don't be afraid of the throttle though, a good
shot helps it and gets the flow over the rudder started, something I need when
reversing out of my slip as it is a bit tight.

And how is switching from forward to reverse? Does the boat stop quickly and
start moving astern or si it like the martec where it keeps going forward for a

I have the Gori 11.5 x 8 on Windburn, also with an Atomic 4.
My guess is that it is slightly over pitched and that 11.5 x 7.5
or 11.5 x 7 might be the optimal size.

I have not found it to be an issue since Windburn is kept light for
racing and bereft of bimini and dodger. While motor sailing, those
days where we can do 2 - 3 kts under sail, the over pitch is great.
Lower RPM, no noise or vibration , and can get to 6.0+ kts.

If your situation includes a heavier configuration for cruising, maybe
dealing with currents often, or long runs then you may be giving up
some speed on the top end.

I'm sittin' on a maxprop 2 blade 13" 1" shaft prop right now.
Came from a Nicholson 303. Works great, looks great. Pics if you want them.

Re: Stus-List best folding prop for 30 MK1 w/ A4

2016-03-07 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
I replaced my Max-Prop 3 blade feathering with a Gori ~ 4 years ago and have
zero issues since. The Gori was tested best/lowest drag of any folding prop by
Yachtworld (?). According to that test, its drag was almost too low to be
measured compared to the other props. Of course, I mostly club race so it made
sense to me, although it was more $$ than other folders. YMMV.

It took some practice to get used to the time it takes it to 'bite' when going
in to reverse in my slip, which I always do. Once it bites (3-6 seconds ?), it
is fine in reverse. This is likely more a result of getting flow across the
rudder than the prop but it does take a few seconds longer than I remember the
MaxProp required with the same rudder. Probably true of any folder vs a
featherer but certainly reason enough to avoid a bunch of forward/reverse
maneuvering coming into or out of a slip, etc.

Geoff at AB Marine was terrific in advising me on the pitch, etc. but to be
sure, I had a diver check the prop clearance from the hull since with a two
blade, it is more important to maximize the blade area.

I'd be inclined to go with a three blade, if it's in the budget. It will be
much smoother than a two-blade.

I put a 13 X 9 Gori 2 blade on my on my Yanmar YSB12 equipped 27 MKIII and
after 7 or 8 years of service have no regrets whatsoever. The pitch of the prop
you select for your 30 depends very much on your engine and gearing, but in
general you want the largest diameter prop that will still give adequate
clearance. Larger props are more efficient, all else being equal. My engine has
approximately 2:1 gearing and the 9 inch pitch works well and does not load the
engine too much. If you have an Atomic 4 with no reduction gear then a slightly
larger prop diameter with less pitch will give you a better match to your
engine than the prop you propose. A lot of A4s were equipped with 2 blade
Michigan wheel 12 X 6 fixed props as original equipment, but whatever prop you
select you should pick one that will present a similar load to the engine as
the original equipment. If you make the diameter bigger, you should make the
pitch less, unless you want to change the torque demands on the engine.
