2009-05-14 Thread Connie Kogler

I have not seen my Evening Grosbeak this morning.. but the Black-
headed is back. As I was putting my shoes on and happened to glance
back out at the feeder, a new yard bird - ROSE-BREASTED GROSBEAK male
is sitting pretty eating seed.

[cobirds] Virginia Rail and Sora in western Lakewood/Jeffco

2009-05-14 Thread Mitchell, Christina
This morning, just before 7 a.m., a Virginia Rail was calling in the wetlands
at the northwest corner of Smith Lake. Around the same time, a Sora was
calling in the wetlands at the west end of Kendrick Lake. Both lakes are quite
high; the wetlands areas near the bike paths that are often dry currently have
standing water.

The Smith Lake wetlands is at the southeast corner of Kipling and Florida;
follow the bike path south along Kipling to where it curves east toward the
lake. Kendrick Lake is just to the east; the Sora was calling in the wetlands
at the northeast corner of Jewell and Lee, where the bike path enters the
property.

[cobirds] Brewster's Warbler, etc., Sondermann Park, El Paso County, 5/14/09

2009-05-14 Thread Allan Burns

This morning Andrew Spencer, John Breitsch, and I birded Sondermann Park.
Despite the windy conditions, the birding was excellent.

We re-found the BREWSTER'S WARBLER (Blue-winged x Golden-winged hybrid). It
was in the southern part of the park, moving around quite actively with a small
mixed flock including several Yellow-rumped Warblers, a Virginia's Warbler, and
a Lazuli Bunting. It gave a Blue-winged Warbler-type song numerous times.

I first heard this bird sing yesterday morning, once just very faintly. But I
couldn't find it, didn't hear it again, concluded I probably hadn't heard what
I thought I had (Blue-winged), and basically forgot about it. It was only found
later in the day by birders looking for the White-eyed Vireo. I saw it
yesterday evening, moving in that same flock (which then also included a
Plumbeous Vireo) with Bill Maynard and Robb Hinds, who has posted some
marvelous photos. As you can see, it doesn't resemble the drawings of
Brewster's in Sibley, but it is very close to one in National Geo, 5th ed.,
the only significant difference being that it has yellow instead of white
wingbars.

This morning we also re-located the WHITE-EYED VIREO and obtained superb looks
at this bright individual toward the middle section of the willows, on the east
side, in the northern part of the park. Note that in one of the photos of the
vireo that Robb posted the bird has a twig in its beak.

Other notable birds at Sondermann this morning:

Broad-winged Hawk (calling while chewing on a robin)
Rose-breasted Grosbeak (male, singing)

Also: A Western Wood-Pewee had shown up, some Western Tanagers were around, and
a Gray Catbird was calling.

Good birding,
Allan Burns

[cobirds] Gray-cheeked Thrush, El Paso County

2009-05-14 Thread SUKE C LEE
I was so fired up about finding the Brewster's Warbler with Jeannie Mitchell
yesterday that I did not report the Gray-cheeked Thrush I had seen in the
morning. It was on the south side of the main entrance road to the Peaceful
Valley suburb on the east side of Marsheffel Rd, El Paso County. It was just
west of the irrigation ditch, where the road splits in two for a short distance.
The bird was foraging on the ground with 4-5 Great-tailed Grackles.

[cobirds] Black-chinned Hummingbird, South Platte Park, Littleton, Arapahoe Cnty

2009-05-14 Thread Skot Latona
The native plant garden around the Carson Nature Center has been hosting a
black-chinned hummingbird for the past 4 - 5 days, who is aggressively
defending the hummingbird feeder against all-comers (broadtails). Last seen at
12:00 Weds 5/14.

Also, South Platte Park is on Facebook and is posting near-daily sightings and
nature happenings as updates. We will continue to use this list serve for
unusual sightings, but the facebook updates are a nice way to stay in touch
with the phenology of the river habitat. We welcome your posts, photos, and
reviews of what you find in the Park as well. Find us by searching facebook
for South Platte Park and become a fan.

[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch banding, Thursday

2009-05-14 Thread Steven Brown

Hi COBirders,

Today started very cool (35o), calm, and busy. We collected 20+ birds
at 6:30, and about the same for the rest of the day. Total of 44 new
birds banded, by Brian Gibbons, Josh Shramo, and Steve Brown.
Another good day.

There was a good turnover of birds last night, a good number of
Swainson's Thrush in the grove today, and our first Hermit Thrush in a
week. Again, some good warblers, but not high numbers. Also - a
sight to see, is Brian's double-high net in which we collected W
Kingbirds and Black-headed Grosbeak about 16 feet off the ground.

Not seen - No sparrows banded, few seen. No Orange-crowned Warblers,
nor Yellow Warblers, but a couple of Yellow-rumps were in the trees
overhead. The hummingbirds are around, and aggressive. Many birds,
once released, were chased out of the area by the hummers! W Wood
Pewee and Ash-throated Flycatcher were heard.

The talented Eur Starling is now doing Canada Goose calls above the
banding station, along with the rest of his playlist.

Banding Highlights today:

2 W Kingbirds (f)
Ovenbird (banded by JS)
Northern Waterthrush (banded by SB)
Com Yellowthroat
Wilson's Warbler
MacGillivray's Warbler (m)
Least Flycatcher
Dusky Flycatcher
Swainson's Thrush
Hermit Thrush
Warbling Vireo
Say's Phoebe
Red-breasted Nuthatch (f)
Black-headed Grosbeak (m)
Com Grackle (m)
House Wrens (still getting new ones)
