[cobirds] Red-Headed Woodpecker Pawnee Grasslands
Hello: On Thursday, June 4th when traveling southbound on CR57 through the Pawnee Grasslands I saw a red-headed woodpecker working its way on the fence posts. We were within 10 minutes of the intersection with Hwy 14. The wildflowers on the grasslands are so spectacular this Spring! [cobirds] Greg Cnyn, Bldr: no sc tngr but poss KE wrbler
Hi folks-- We were disappointed not to see the Big Red Guy early this morning, but had what I think was a Kentucky warbler skulking in the bathroom area of Gregory Canyon trailhead today. I got one quick look, and heard about 6 songs, none of which sounded like the recordings. The song quality was very similar but the shape of the words was different (shorter, among other things). Phrases contained 4 repetitions. Furthermore they were spaced about 2 minutes apart, so be patient. The bird was bright yellow underneath, olive on top, with strikingly black eyeline contrasting with face throat. That's all I got to register in half a second. Furthermore, deep within the heart of mountain parks is a lusty little ovenbird. With it song echoing off the canyon walls and thick forest, I don't think I ever heard a small bird sing so loudly. [cobirds] 2009 CDOW Habitat Stamp
COBirders, I just received a message from a volunteer at the Colorado Division of Wildlife saying: No Habitat Stamp is needed for SWAs this year, although the message also says anyone purchasing a hunting or fishing licenses will be required to purchase the habitat stamp. Non-license recreationists may still purchase stamps as a way of contributing to wildlife conservation in the state wildlife areas. The CDOW owns 230 State Wildlife Areas currently totalling 370,000 acres, many with excellent birding opportunities, all open to the public (some only seasonally) for hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing. http://wildlife.state.co.us has information about specific properties. [cobirds] Re: 2009 CDOW Habitat Stamp
Habitat Stamps will not only not be required for entry into State Wildlife Areas this year (with exception as noted for those buying fishing and hunting licenses) but will no longer be required in the future. The Colo State Legislature passed a bill this year removing the requirement that all persons entering SWA's have a Habitat Stamp as it turned out that the requirement was in conflict with some federal laws pertaining to the spending of federal monies on those areas. Birders and other users of SWA's are still encouraged to purchase Habitat Stamps so we can help DOW purchase habitat that supports wildlife including the birds we enjoy. Additionally the Habitat Stamp pays for search and rescue programs. A Colorado http://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/colorado Wildlifehttp://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/wildlifeHabitat Stamp is no longer required to enter State Wildlife http://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/wildlife Areas. New state legislation has redesigned the Coloradohttp://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/colorado Wildlife http://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/wildlife Habitat Protection Program that provides funding for wildlifehttp://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/wildlifehabitat conservation http://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/conservation. Anyone buying a hunting http://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/hunting or fishing http://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/fishing license in Coloradohttp://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/coloradois still required to purchase a stamp. Non-license buyers may continue to purchase stamps as a way to contribute to wildlife http://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/wildlife conservationhttp://blog.buckrunoutdoors.com/tag/conservation. Purchase of a stamp also provides search-and-rescue benefits. [cobirds] Scarlet Tanager, White-winged Dove, Boulder
Hello all, Walter Szeliga and I birded Gregory Canyon this afternoon. On my way to pick Walter up I walked out my front door and had the White-winged Dove singing on top of my building. At Gregory, we couldn't find the reported possible Kentucky Warbler, but then it was 3:30 PM. When we got to the Scarlet Tanager spot it took a while for the bird to appear, but eventually he showed very well and sang and called for us. [cobirds] Osprey Family, Larimer County
Hi Cobirders, My granddaughter and I heard loud chirping and hollering this evening, and she looked up and we saw a young raptor and were able to identify it by an adult flying nearby. It was a very young Osprey. I've been seeing Ospreys around wilson Ave. the Big Thompson River often; however, no one seems to know where the nest might be. Does anyone know of an Osprey nest in this area? (Nick?) (Cole?) Elaine Coley Loveland Receive Notifications of Incoming Messages Easily monitor multiple email accounts access them with a click. Becky, about 6 years ago, for 2 years, A a pair of orchard orioles nested in the big cottonwood tree between the road and Cottonwood pond. So...check for nesting.
