[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir Birds

2009-12-30 Thread millerrichj
I checked out Pueblo Res. yesterday (12/29) for waterfowl. There were
there were hundreds, possibly thousands, of ducks on the water.Mostly C.
Goldeneyes and C. Mergansers west of the North Shore Marina. Unfortunately
this area was a shooting gallery. Whenever there was a volley of gunfire,
the ducks would take off and fly in all directions. This made it difficult
to systematically check over all of them. The best find was a pair of
imperturbable Common Loons.

Near the dam things were quieter and I found a pair of LONG-TAILED DUCKS.
One was a handsome basic male. Its partner was a basic female (or maybe a
1st winter).

There weren't a whole lot of gulls on the tires at the South Marina. An
adult Lesser Black-backed Gull and an adult Great Black-backed Gull were
seen here among the Herrings and Ring-bills.

[cobirds] Exotics on CBCs

2009-12-30 Thread Hugh and Urling Kingery
Expanding on Ted Floyd's advocacy of reporting exotics on CBCs:

Hasn't Grand Junction had, for 20 years or more, a breeding population of
Peafowl? As I recall, in two different places -- east of and southwest of city
center. I recall seeing them at Coen & Brenda's extraordinary tepee-shaped bird
feeder in Clifton.

In fact, if Peafowl actually continue to breed there or even subsist (a la
Ring-billed Gulls), shouldn't they belong on Colorado's Official State List?

Or, if they've died out, how long did they survive and continue to breed?

[cobirds] RFI: Banding rosy-finches

2009-12-30 Thread kingfisher80227

I have about 100 rosy-finches that come to my feeders several times per day.
I've noticed several birds have leg bandssome with silver bands on the
right leg, some with a red band on the right leg, and one with two florescent
pink on the left leg. Does anyone know about banding rosy-finches in the
Colorado mountains... who does it, where, what time of year, last time banding
was done?

[cobirds] Mandarin Duck

2009-12-30 Thread Joan Dawson
The Mandarin Duck was spotted today about 2:30 on the snow on the
far side of the closer pond. He was sleeping with his head tucked
for awhile but finally raised it up so he could be clearly seen.
Thanks to Pat and Bill Hoadley for helping to find the bird.

[cobirds] Imm. Great Black-backed Gull in Broomfield Co

2009-12-30 Thread Douglas Kibbe

An immature Great Black-backed Gull (possibly the same one which was seen
recently at nearby Thomas Reservoir in Boulder Co.) was on a pond on the east
side of Lowell Blvd a short distance south of Rt 7 in Broomfield Co. (directly
across from the intersection of Anthem Ranch Road and Lowell Blvd.). This
appears to be a first county record?
