[cobirds] Merlin - DIA Owl Loop

2010-01-03 Thread Pamela Breitsch
John and I drove the DIA Owl loop at about 7 am.

- MANY Rough-legged hawks - we never did start counting, but I would say
in the area of 10+
- MANY Red-Tailed hawks
- 1 Ferruginous Hawk
- 1 Northern Harrier eating either a prairie dog or rabbit - several
others flying around trying to be so lucky.
- 4 Bald Eagles - 2 adults, 2 juveniles
- 1 MERLIN on Powhatten dancing on top of a telephone pole - not sure
what he was doing..but he appeared to be dancing. Was not very skittish
either.
- One lump of dirt which was trying to disguise itself as an owl, but
was, in fact, just a lump of dirt.

A VERY quick drop into Barr gave us a bunch of red-winged blackbirds,
house sparrows, a downy woodpecker, one white-crowned sparrow, and
another Bald Eagle. 4 Eurasian-Collared Doves on the way out. But since
we were dressed for driving the owl loop and not standing outside we
left very quickly.

[cobirds] Greeley CBC

2010-01-03 Thread Norma Erickson
Mary Kippes, Bonnie Hobbs, Terry Hunter and I did area B for the Greeley CBC,
which includes Seeley Lake and the old Berg's Feed Lot on Hwy 392. The raptors
were great. Seeley Lake two Bald Eagle to the east with Red-tailed Hawks,
Northern Harriers and Rough-legged Hawk flying around and at times challenging
each other. Berg's Feed Lot, Prairie Falcon and Merlin. To end the day a
Ferruginous Hawk by Carbody Lake. (Neuman's) Harriers and Red-tails throughout
the day. And Kestrels.
We had a total of 31 species, which is par for area B.

[cobirds] Loveland area rarities (Larimer)

2010-01-03 Thread Nick Komar
Today I went to look for some of the unusual birds reported on the Loveland CBC
on Friday. I refound:
Rusty Blackbirds where Chuck Hundertmark reported them (see Cobirds post)
Long-tailed Duck where Bill Kaempfer reported it; there were also 9 Greater
Scaup there!
Great-tailed Grackles (flock of 10) south of Cattail Pond along the roads

I could not refind the reported Common Redpoll in Stout at the south end of
Horsetooth Reservoir.

[cobirds] Larimer County 1/3

2010-01-03 Thread Mark Miller
Hi Everyone-

Today 1/3 I drove up to Fort Collins to check in on the crossbills. It
seemed very quiet today at Grandview Cemetery, and with the overcast, the
mood was especially lugubrious. Toward noon I ran into Connie and Joyce
Takamine, and soon after, we all got good looks at the male White-winged
Crossbill in spruces where sections 7 and 8 come together (toward the south
end). I saw not a single Red Crossbill. In the afternoon I went over to
Stout (which my Rand McNally calls Horsetooth Heights for some reason) and
saw no redpoll. House Finches, Dark-eyed Juncos (mostly Pink-sided, with one
Slate-colored and one Gray-headed), and a Western Scrub-Jay dominated the
feeders, and the normally feisty siskins didn't get much food. From there, I
went to Simpson Ponds SWA and saw no blackbirds, but it was snowing and
getting late, so I'll have to try again another day. In case the directions
aren't clear (they sure weren't for me), get on either 14th Street SE going
east from US 287 or CO-402 going west from I-25 (they're the same street,
but there is no CO-402 signage on US 287). At LCR 9E, go north, and turn
left as soon as you cross the Big Thompson River into a parking lot. I'm not
sure if I found the small stream fed by a culvert, and it didn't help that
people in camo with shotguns were walking in the middle of the river. You
can also get there on 1st Street SE from US 287 if you follow 1st until it
ends at LCR 9E, then go south on 9E past the obvious parking lot on the
right to the smaller one on the right next to the river.
