[cobirds] Annual Barrow's Goldeneye Count - Nov 20-30

2010-11-20 Thread Jason Beason
Colorado Birders,

Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory will be accepting counts of Barrow's
Goldeneyes again this year from 20 November through 30 November
(includes this weekend and next - sorry for not much notice). This
will be the twelfth year of the count. This is not a statistically
rigorous endeavor, but it should provide insight into whether or not
Barrow's Goldeneye populations are taking a rapid and severe crash.
We would like to concentrate on counting all of the Barrow's
Goldeneyes in Colorado, however, we would appreciate a full species
list with counts for each for the waterbodies that are counted. Also,
if participants could enter their count totals into the eBird web site
that would be much appreciated. I will check eBird for all BAGOs
reported during this time period for those of you that don't post on
CoBirds or WSBN. Please let me know if you would like me to e-mail
datasheets to you (datasheets are not required to participate).

Here are the lakes that have had the bulk of Barrow's Goldeneyes on
past counts and will hopefully be visited the next two weekends:
Bear Creek Reservoir – Jefferson County
Blue Lake – Eagle County
Blue Mesa Reservoir – Gunnison County
Clear Creek Reservoir – Lake County
Dillon Reservoir – Summit County
Eleven Mile Reservoir – Park County
Grand Lake – Grand County
Horsetooth Reservoir – Larimer County
Ice Lake – Chaffee County
Jerry Creek Reservoir – Mesa County
Lake Avery – Rio Blanco County
Lake Granby – Grand County
Mount Elbert Forebay – Lake
North Pond Park - Summit
Ranch at the Roaring Fork Ponds – Garfield
Rifle Falls Fish Hatchery – Garfield County
Rifle Gap Reservoir – Garfield County
Shadow Mountain Reservoir – Grand County
Silverthorne Sewage Ponds – Summit County
Spring Park Reservoir - Eagle County
Stagecoach Reservoir - Routt County
Steamboat Lake – Routt County
Taylor Park Reservoir – Gunnison County
Union Reservoir – Weld
Vega Reservoir – Mesa County
Yampa River (near Craig) – Moffat County

Here are the totals for each year of the count:
1999 – 226 at 8 sites
2000 – 107 at 16 sites (less effort)
2001 – 181 at 20 sites
2002 – 189 at 16 sites
2003 – 245 at 21 sites
2004 – 226 at 14 sites
2005 – 219 at 16 sites
2006 – 280 at 21 sites
2007 – 225 at 17 sites
2008 - 183 at 19 sites
2009 - 163 at 16 sites

[cobirds] Golden-crowned and Harris's Sparrows, Boulder

2010-11-20 Thread PETER GENT

All,

Both the first-year Golden-crowned Sparrow and the Harris's Sparrow
were in the juniper break at the Teller Lake parking lot on Valmont
east of Boulder this morning with White-crowned and Limey Sparrows.
They were both quite shy while feeding on the ground.

The single Snow Goose continues at Dodd Res, Niwot farther north,

Cheers, Peter Gent.

[cobirds] Possible Eastern Towhee, Douglas

2010-11-20 Thread Hugh Kingery

Friday, while scouting for an Audubon field trip today (Saturday) I saw a
female Eastern Towhee perched at the top of some willows. Today during our
field trip, we were unable to refind it. I might possibly have heard her
however -- but just one call. We saw only 3 (Spotted) towhees today but
yesterday I saw 6-8.

This occurred at Tomichi Gulch Open Space. To get there go to the traffic light
in Franktown; south on Colo. 83 a half to 3/4 of a mile. Turn left (east) on
Russelville Road. Continue on Russelville 2-3 miles; left on Tomichi. Continue
about a quarter-mile and pull into the small parking lot on the right. A sign
says it's a covenant community -- park there; it might also say, Tomichi
Gulch.

RE: [cobirds] Ross's Gull YES

2010-11-20 Thread Wayne Wathen

My wife Laura and I left Cherry Creek State Park about 45 minutes ago shortly
after 2:30 p.m. and the gull was still there. It takes some patience to see it
well because it is usually quite a ways out. It didn't stay on the water long
but was mainly flying low over the water in a swooping flight. I found the
wedge-shaped tail somewhat difficult to see with these old eyes but did finally
get some decent looks. Thanks for those who helped Laura and I get on the
gull.

[cobirds] Ross's Gull update and account

2010-11-20 Thread Glenn Walbek
Folks,

The Ross's Gull continues to please the birders at Cherry Creek Reservoir. He
was there this morning after the fog lifted and was there when I left at 12:30
p.m.. With a bit of fog still in the air, the bird flew back into the
southeast cove and rested reasonably close to shore for about 20 minutes,
before beginning his M.O. of fluttering over the water picking up food items in
the distant, center of the lake. As of 3:00p.m., Steve Larson called and
stated the bird was giving very nice looks from the west end of the dam. I
will post updates as I get them.

Back to Yesterday, the 19th. I had arranged to meet Joe Roller at CCSP to do
some looning and gulling. We were there a short time and had re-located the
Pacific Loon, Red-throated Loon and several Common Loons. We also saw the
second cycle Lesser Black-backed Gull that was seen the day before. Bob
Rozinkski arrived and showed us a photo of a Snow Bunting he had taken only 30
minutes earlier, so Joe and I set off to find it. Joey had gotten the word out
so several birders had arrived to help and more were on the way. We
unsuccessfully scoured the shores on the east and south side, when Joe came
upon a 'Little Gull'. The bird was distant and the light was bad, but there
was indeed a small buoyant gull with darker underwings flying along the dam.
Joe and I, along with Dave who I had met at the marina, scoped the gull for
several minutes. Joe commented that he thought the bird looked a bit large for
Little Gull and I stated the shape of the bird, mainly the long-pointed wings,
gave me some concern about our ID, but the dark underwing was about the best
field mark we could safely discern at the time. We contemplated the
possibility of other species, primarily Black-headed Gull, but that was quickly
dismissed as we consulted Joe's field guide. So Joe left and Cole arrived.

We went to the end of the Lake Loop point and continued to look at this bird.
The light was improving somewhat and we began thinking out loud. Why are the
bird's wings pointed? Why can't I see the perfectly formed white edge that
stretches from tertial tips to P10? These are the thing I love about Little
Gulls, but I wasn't seeing them. Then Cole asked, have you eliminated Ross's
Gull? The answer was no. He then pulled up the field guide app on his iPhone
and went to Ross's Gull. Things were beginning to make sense. We studied the
bird some more and called out field marks; wedge shaped tailed, uniform pale
gray upper wing and the pink tinge. Within a few minutes we were pretty
confident we were looking at a Ross's Gull. But the bird was still plenty far
away and we wanted better looks. At this point I contacted Joey and told him
what I thought we were looking at. He got the word out, along with Cole and I,
as we headed towards the dam for hopefully a better look.

As we walked out on the dam from the east, it was apparent we were closer to
the bird. Close enough to tell for sure we were looking at a Ross's Gull. Now
I had to get ID-able photographs. I hammered the thing to the tune of 634
shots, most of which were lousy. Fortunately, Joe Roller had returned and
commandeered a vessel for our use. We were rewarded with some nice photos as
we were obviously much closer to the bird.

If you go to see this gem, bring a scope! Also be prepared for many
Bonaparte's Gulls, behaving much the same as the Ross's Gull. The beautiful
wedge-shaped tail can be seen each time he swoops to the water as he tends to
fan it as he slows. The under-wing is medium gray, not charcoal gray like
Little Gull. The wings are very long and pointed. Look for the pink cast to
his body in good light. The dark smudge around his eyes make his eyes look
large on a smallish head. Leg color is very hard to discern from a distance,
but photos have revealed they are dark orange. I have posted a composite photo
of the Ross's and a Little Gull for comparison. If you haven't been to see
this beauty, you must go!

[cobirds] How rare is it?

2010-11-20 Thread William H Kaempfer
So, if you need to convince a spouse, child, parent, friend or boss of just how
rare a Ross's Gull is, let me guide you to the latest CBC issue of American
Birds.

There have been 110 years of Christmas Bird Counts. In 2009/2010 there were
2,160 different counts conducted (which was, admittedly, a record). But in the
precious 10's of thousands of CBCs undertaken across North America here are the
totals for Ross's Gull reports:

86th Count (1985-86) Reelfoot Lake, TN-1
95th Count (1994-95) St. Catherine's ON (Canada) -1

Two individuals, 110 years and probably 150,000 CBCs-two birds.

So, to all 150 or so of us who have relished this bird in the last two
days-cheers!

Thanks to you Joe, Glenn and Cole.

[cobirds] 3 Cheers for CC Res

2010-11-20 Thread Bob's Email
Hi

How about three cheers for Cherry Creek Reservoir? Cherry Creek already has a
world-wide reputation as one of a few locations, at least in North America and
particularly given its size, for hosting all five of the world's loon species.
Now, to top that off, a Ross's Gull !!! Special thanks to Glenn, Cole, Joe and
others for persevering, particularly for wading out into cold water, with
cameras and binocs overhead, and commandeering a fishing vessel to obtain the
convincing evidence. Medals are in order.

[cobirds] Thanks!

2010-11-20 Thread Tina Jones

Many thanks to Cole, Glen, and Joe for finding the Ross Gull, and for helping
others see the bird. I can only think of birders who would be willing to get
wet in very cold water, to photograph a Rare bird. Thanks for your effort and
time.

[cobirds] Snow Bunting - Cherry Creek SP

2010-11-20 Thread Ira Sanders
Birders,

Somewhere around 11:30 on 11/20, a Snow Bunting flew over the group at the
Lake Loop. It wasn't seen, just heard. Appears it just likes flyovers.
