[cobirds] Phoebe Bridge at Chatfield
I propose that birders give directions around Chatfield Reservoir by referring to Phoebe Bridge, eg, just upstream from Phoebe Bridge, right at Phoebe Bridge, under Phoebe Bridge or between the Plum Creek parking lot and Phoebe Bridge. The pair of nesting Eastern Phoebes was originally discovered at Phoebe Bridge almost two months ago by Glenn Walbek, and they seem to have a fledged youngster now. That span has here-to-fore suffered under the awkward appellation of that pedestrian bridge that crosses Plum Creek, you know, just up Plum Creek a little from the Plum Creek parking lot on the east side of Chatfield Reservoir. When did Kingfisher Bridge over the South Platte at Chatfield ever have Kingfishers? In the last century? At least Phoebe Bridge supports phoebes. The alternate name of Sayornis Bridge is not catchy enough, has one extra syllable and sounds snooty. Walbek's Bridge is also a possibility, but he is too modest. I am not an engineer and I do not know if that particular bridge is the type known as an arch, pier, gantry, leg, suspension, truss, trestle, cantilever, bowstring, tubular, bascule, pontoon, swing, tubular-arch, turnpike, floating, steel arch, vertical lift, draw, box-girder, lattice, hoist, induction, bottom-road, arched-truss, panel-truss, covered, or covered Bailey bridge. Perhaps someone knows. So I will be going to Phoebe Bridge to (ethically) photograph young Eastern Phoebes. The best bird found at Phoebe Bridge this year was the Tri-colored Heron. At Phoebe Bridge, fishing is not allowed and pishing is discouraged. Joe Roller, Denver -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Re: Eastern Kingbirds, Steamboat, Routt County
Mary Jane, I have seen Eastern Kingbirds near Kremmling and near Stagecoach Lake. I do BBS routes over there (Yampa and Buffalo Park), but have not seen them on those. The first Eastern Kingbird I ever got (lifer at the time) was west of Cortez in McElmo Canyon in 1978, so they have been west of the divide for some time.I see them periodically, but it seems very sporadic to me where they show up. Tom Hall Livermore, CO On Jun 20, 8:43 pm, mjb4...@comcast.net wrote: Staying with friends on their ranch west of Steamboat Springs, I ws surprised to see two Eastern Kingbirds hop up on the wooden fence outside their deck. They were beautiful and our hosts were delighted. They have Western Kingbirds, but this ws new. Maybe is is not unusual for them to be in Routt County, but it seemed pretty far west to me. They are not birders, but can't help becoming such because of Sandhill Cranes, Great Blue Herons, Bald Eagles, Meadowlarks, etc., etc. They pointed out the white 'band' on the bottom of their tails. [cobirds] Lesser Goldfinch at 7300', Larimer
Greetings All, Not that Lesser Goldfinch is a rarity for Larimer County, but today I had a male in a narrow riparian willow strip at 7300 feet. The location was the turnoff for Big Elk Meadows from Hwy 34 (I think its 34... the road from Lyons to Estes Park). [cobirds] Kingbirds. Now, Great Blue Herons
Thank you, Tom for answering. Andrews and And Righters' Colorado Birds shows they are pretty uncommon in western Colorado, including Northwestern Colo. Question: Last year I had reported a colony of Great Blue Herons on this ranch property - on the Elk River. A birder from that area was doing a study on Heron colonies. This year that group of trees is empty of those nests. Why, I don't know. But, unfortunately, I cannot seem to bring up his name - on my computer. . . . Would you happen to know who that may have been?? Thanks. Mary Jane Black Denver -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Broad-tailed HB and Say's Ph nests, Black-chinned HB at feeders, Jeffco
I am following a Say's Phoebe nesting on my front porch. The 4 chicks hatched 6/12. What fun to watch parents stuff big grasshoppers, crickets, etc. down their throats! Hope there is room for the 4 in the small box she chose for nesting. A nearby neighbor has a Broad-tailed HB nest in a 4' lilac bush! So, I am following her also, similar to the successful fledging of 2 chicks photographed in a nearby nest last year. I also have a male Black-chinned HB coming frequently each day to my feeders. I haven't positively IDed a female yet this year, but had a pair courting nearby on July 7, 2009. Of course I didn't have my camera with me to get photos of that beautiful violet gorget. No nests found so far. The Brewer's Blackbirds have a nest nearby for the second year that they are protecting. Scads of Lesser Goldfinches arguing over 2 thistle feeders! Fun late spring/early summer! Photos of the nests: http://www.kayniyo.com/birds_flycatcher.htm http://www.kayniyo.com/birds_hummingbird.htm Kay Kayleen A. [cobirds] Boulder Valley Ranch Bobolink, Boulder
I truly am a Bobolink magnet (I can think of worse things)!!. Had 1 male in the reeds down by the pond. I'm out there a lot with my dogs and have been for many years. First Bobolink. [cobirds] Another Red-headed Woodpecker - Mesa County
Just returned from doing some Atlas Blocks on the Western Slope and noticed several Red-headed Woodpecker postings. I also observed an adult Red-headed Woodpecker in my Escalante Forks block in Mesa County on Tuesday, June 14, 2011, around 11:00 A.M. The bird was seen along a fence line with wooden posts in a grass hayfield. It would sally forth now and then to flycatch before returning to a wooden post. I was on private property with permission to bird and was somewhat surprised at the location of the woodpecker (middle of a an irrigated hayfield) until I realized that a riparian area with Narrowleaf Cottonwoods was only about 1/4 mile away. The authors of Birds of Western Colorado Plateau and Mesa County indicate there have been only a dozen or so sightings in Western Colorado mostly in Moffat and Routt counties. The only other Red- headed Woodpecker I have seen in Western Colorado was in the 700 block of Meeker Street (east side of the street) in the early 1950's as a youngster walking to school - talk about a late posting!!! As a youngster I had no idea that I had seen a rarity. After all, I had seen pictures of the bird in books. [cobirds] contact for reporting neck banded goose
Somewhere in the depths of my address book is the email address for the person who did the tagging and monitoring of canada geese---the kind with the green neck collars. Would this person kindly step up? I use to see them quite a bit but haven't for awhile. I have one now with a collar A6C2. I would love to hear from you so I can know how old you think the goose is by now and from whence he came. Thanks, Deb Carstensen, Arapahoe county.
