[cobirds] Night flight, Boulder County, August 9th

2011-08-09 Thread Ted Floyd

Hello, Birders.

There's been a nice night flight this past hour over Lafayette, Boulder County,
with flight calls detected at a rate of about 90 per hour. Most flight calls
have been Chipping Sparrow and Lark Sparrow; there have also been flight calls
of Lark Bunting, Yellow Warbler, and presumed Brewer's Sparrow. Nice cool,
clear night, with winds nearly calm. Decent meteor activity, too, what with the
Perseids peaking in just a few nights.

[cobirds] Scarlet Tanager (El Paso) yes

2011-08-09 Thread Bill Maynard
COBirders,

Six of us watched the orange variant Scarlet Tanager male feeding a wasp to
the wing-bared juvenile this A.M. at about 0830 along the North Cheyenne
Canyon Road between the parking area and pedestrian bridge over the creek in
the vicinity of the area described yesterday, but ~100 feet closer
(downstream) to the parking area. For a while, Pygmy Nuthatches, a Plumbeous
Vireo, and a Mountain Chickadee were in the same tree.

[cobirds] Summer Tanager, Larimer County

2011-08-09 Thread Elaine Coley

Hi All,
There was a Summer Tanager (not adult male) on the Big Thompson Rec. Trail in Loveland East of Wilson Ave.. First time I've seen one on this trail. I tried to make it a Western Tanager (common here in spring and late summer), but the big light-colored bill and general look and coloring wouldn't match up.
For those of you who know the trail spots, this was on the WSW side of "seis", just W of "Lone Cottonwood" and the trash barrel about 9:30 a.m.

[cobirds] Least Bittern, Holcim Marsh

2011-08-09 Thread millerrichj
Late this morning I flushed the Least Bittern as I was walking along the
south shore of the marsh. It disappeared into the tall cattails near the
center of the marsh. After an hour's wait it hadn't reappeared. My viewing
time of the bittern in the three trips to Holcim is about 14 seconds total.
