[cobirds] Re: Birding Makes The Cover of Sports Illustrated!

2012-07-26 Thread Scott Severs
Thanks Gary for sharing!

The SI cover illustration is by the great Arthur Singer - of Golden Guide
fame (any many other great books) and together with his son did the 50
state birds and flowers stamps. Plus some of those great National
Geographic posters that some of us hung on our bedroom walls.

If you wish a copy of the aforementioned SI birding issue cover ... here's

Gary, I was wrong in my earlier email. We have a site (sicovers.com)
where you can purchase a 11x 14 copy of that for about $20. Unfortunately,
it's not currently on the site but our photo rights person is adding it in
the next day or two (you're not the first person to ask). So bookmark that
site, go back to it on, say, Friday and you should be all set. If not, let
me know and I'll figure out why it's not working.

Apologies for that email earlier. I didn't realize covers were different
than photos that appear in the mag.

 Thanks.

[cobirds] Nocturnal migration, Lafayette, Boulder County, July 26th

2012-07-26 Thread Ted Floyd

Hello, Birders.

There was a nice night flight over Lafayette, Boulder County, Colorado, between
3:30 and 4:30 this morning, Thursday, Jul. 26th. Chipping and Lark sparrows
were slow but steady during the hour I was out, and I heard 1 or 2 flocks of
Baird's Sandpipers passing over.

[cobirds] Eurasian Collared-dove behavior

2012-07-26 Thread scraig10
For 5 years, Eurasian Collared-doves have frequented my yard in Colorado
Springs. They are somewhat aggressive toward Mourning Doves, but have not
driven them from the yard.

This year I observed some VERY aggressive behavior by doves toward American
Crows, a pair of which nests in a neighbor's tree. One or 2 of the doves have
begun chasing crows at high speed through the yard and adjoining property. The
doves fly right on the tails of the crows, outmaneuvering the crows in the air.
The harassment is not limited to aerial pursuit, but now includes attacks on
crows on the ground. The crows are bigger and present more of a physical threat
to the doves, but for some reason, the doves have intimidated the local crows.

Has anyone else observed similar behavior?

The EC Doves and Mourning Doves in my yard this year (a pair of each)
settled on an uneasy truce, under the feeders. The occasional aggressive
rush from one species toward the other to drive it from prime seed
pickings, but nothing like you're describing with the crows.

Re: [cobirds] Eurasian Collared-dove behavior

2012-07-26 Thread Tom P
I happened upon some House Finches aggressively chasing a Crow once--- the
Crow clearly had a nestling in its mouth.

Your ECD's may have witnessed this Crow behavior before. In fact, Crows
aren't the only corvid who enjoy eating nestlings.
