I wasn't able to find any Bohemian Waxwings either. I did see a Rusty
Blackbird and a couple of Eastern Bluebirds while I was there.

Observation start time: 08:45:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 6.25 hours

Official Counter:Cynthia Madsen

Observers:Dave Hill, Ernie Stone, Fran Haas

Visitors:
Jerry Stone, husband of observer, Ernie Stone, assisted us with our
observations from 9:30 until noon. Mary Cay Berger arrived at 10:45 and
helped us until the end. We so appreciate the extra eyes on the skies!

We saw 11 hikers, 4 bikers, and 3 runners. There may have been more, but
sometimes things get busy.

Weather:
We were never less than 95% cloudy today. The starting temperature was 35
degrees warming to 42, but with the light winds (never more than 6 mph)
mainly from the east, it felt pretty chilly on the east side of the ridge.

Raptor Observations:
We had six migrating raptors today with one being an unidentified accipiter
which moved by too quickly for good looks and one unidentified buteo which
we picked up north of the ridge, too far for positive identification. The
other migrating hawks were 3 Red-tailed Hawks, two of which were over the
west ridge and one very close to the ridge on the west side. We had one
Bald Eagle migrant traveling over the west ridge.

We saw 5 local Red-tailed Hawks at once, 3 working the area near the
Alameda exit on C470 while 2 were perched on the closest power poles in
Matthews/Winters Park. At one point we watched a courtship flight of 2 of
these Red-tailed Hawks complete with legs down in front of Mount Morrison .
We may have had more than one juvenile Golden Eagle, but we only saw one
at a time...flying over Marston Reservoir, then over the west ridge, and
finally in the Apex Houses area where it scared up a flock of about 80
American Crows.

Non-raptor Observations:
In the 9:00 hour there were 3 elk in the Mother Cabrini/ Bare Slope area.

Other birds seen: Western Scrub-Jay (1), Black-billed Magpie (4), American
Crow (80), Common Raven (4), Mountain Bluebird (60), Townsend's Solitaire
(1), American Robin (2), Dark-eyed Junco (7).

Predictions:
If the weather predictions prove to be correct, it may not be conducive for
hawks or hawk watchers tomorrow.

Report submitted by Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (jeff.bi...@rmbo.org)
Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.rmbo.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American W

[cobirds] Holcim Wetlands in Fremont County, 3/8/13

2013-03-08 Thread melgoff

Hey, cobirders.

For some unexplainable reason we ventured down to Holcim Wetlands in Fremont
County thinking we might acutally see one of the Bohemian Waxwings reported by
Brandon Percival and SeEtta Moss.

It is to laugh!

We ran into SeEtta when we first arrived and searched for over 2-and-a-half
hours. While we did see 20 or more waxwings, no amount of wishin' and hopin'
could make one a BOWA. Further proof of their mythical status is that in both
the NatGeo and Sibley guides the BOWAs are drawings. I figure most "photos" are
just Photoshop Phonies.

We also got to meet Robb Hinds who was still there when we left. I hope he got
to see the target birds.

On the bright side, the area was quite birdy. Here is the list:

Common Mergansers

Mallard

Canada Geese

American Coots

American Robins (abundant)

Red-shafted Flickers (abundant)

Belted Kingfishers

Northern Shrike

Bald Eagles (one adult, one mangy looking juvenile)

Golden Eagles

Killdeer

White-breasted Nuthatches

Blue Jays

Red-winged Blackbirds

Great Blue Heron

Cedar Waxwings

European Starlings

Eurasian Collared Doves

Song Sparrows

Dark-eyed Juncos

Good birding, everyone!

[cobirds] Horned grebe, Arapahoe/Jeff County

2013-03-08 Thread Deborah Carstensen
Claire Montour and I were at the South Platte reservoir today and saw what we
believe to be a female horned grebe. According My books this seems unlikely,
but she seemed to have the correct characteristics. I got a completely terrible
picture of her, but you can see some of the characteristics
There was also a nice variety of diving ducks, redheads and ruddy ducks
there at the reservoir today.
We had some great looks at a bald eagle overhead and a 50 piece murder
of crows doing courtship behavior. The were near eagle watch lake, southern
area of South Platte park. There were also lots of shoveling shovelers there.
I had a wonderful time photographing three pairs of redheads on my pond
today just north of South Platte Park. It was such a joy to look out and have
them, as well as a pair common mergansers, spending time on the pond.

[cobirds] Mtn. Bluebirds, Plainview, Jefferson County

2013-03-08 Thread Paula Hansley
By 11 am, Adam Jack's Mtn. Bluebird (male) flock had migrated from the
entrance of Coal Creek Canyon
northward to an area east of Plainview. As I sat in my car and watched,
the birds gradually moved north and
east while feeding from mullein and tall stalks of grass. What a sight!

At this rate, by tomorrow morning, these hungry birds might be in south
Boulder looking for insects in the snow.
It might be time to stock up on meal worms!

[cobirds] March at home

2013-03-08 Thread Robert A. Spencer
Hi Cobirders. The year is marching right along! March came in like
a lamb for a couple days then lambasted us with a storm that rushed
on with strong winds and

dumped lots of snow on the plains as it roared on to the Jersey shore.

Thursday it was summer in March. Temperature here in the sixties with
only occasional breezes. In afternoon I saw first Robin checking out
the yard I am sure it

is returning to set up territory.

Today still warm. About 8 AM there was a Spotted Towhee in the
Chokecherry. A species I rarely get here. Also White-crowned
Sparrow, 5 types of Juncos, and
the Black-capped Chickadees. The lone Red-wing BB came but didn't
stay. Flew off to the northeast into the distance.

Warning Daylight Saving time is back Sunday and then only ten days
to Vernal Equinox and spring is here.

Keep birding.

[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow - Red Rocks - Jeffco

2013-03-08 Thread mike

Good Morning All,

Took some friends up to Red Rocks this morning and ran into Bruce
Neuman and a friend of his at the Red Rocks feeders behind the Trading
Post. We all saw the Golden-crowned Sparrow and Bruce reported they
had seen the pair of Prairie Falcons engaged in courtship behavior
earlier in the morning. Looked for the Peregrine Falcons on the back
of Ship Rock, but looks like they haven't arrived yet. However, the
pair of Common Ravens are continuing to build a nest at the extreme
west end of Creation Rock.
