[cobirds] N. Parula at Riverwalk in Canon City, FreCo
Sunday morning there was a singing Northern Parula at the riverwalk parking lot at the end of Sell Ave. This morning I found it again at the same location, zz-uping away. Both times it was in the dense cluster of small trees at the west end of the parking lot. [cobirds] Eastern Meadowlark seen again today (6/11) at Beech Open Space, Boulder County
At 5:50 AM today the Eastern Meadowlark was repeatedly singing the Eastern song from atop the conspicuous, lonely tree on the ridge south of the Beech Open Space picnic structure. It then flew down to a telephone pole near that structure and was there when I left an hour later. Directions were in Chris Nunes's (many thanks to Chris!!!) post to Cobirds yesterday. Basically north of Boulder on Hway 36, turn off at Neva Road, park near the locked gate to the Beech space and walk in. [cobirds] Eastern Meadowlark -- Beech Open Space, Neva Rd., Boulder County
The EASTERN MEADOWLARK reported yesterday by Christian Nunes and also seen early this morning (June 11) continues to be seen later in the day at the Beech Open Space off Neva Road and just west of US36, but it is moving about over a considerable area. Between 8:10 and 9:15 AM I and three other birders searched diligently over the Beech Open Space area leading down to the picnic area and a fair way east of there down nearer the lake. We heard several Western Meadowlarks but nothing sounding like an Eastern. Suddenly at 9:15, the Eastern Meadowlark was singing loudly from the top of a wooden power pole (roughly 3 poles west of the picnic area and directly above the dirt access road). The bird sang continuously for 2-3 minutes and then flew south and perched on the only small pine bush on the ridge line to the south. It sang there for a couple of minutes and then flew further south into the next small drainage. During all this time it sang ONLY Eastern Meadowlark song and when it flew from the pole it gave a small piece of Eastern call. [cobirds] White-winged Dove, Boulder County
For the past two weeks, Diana and I have had a White-winged Dove visit our backyard feeders between 7:15 and 8:00 am, largely in response (we suspect) to the new xeriscape landscaping and 'Arizona-friendly' environment. The bird is easy to see from inside our home with a view to the backyard feeders, and not from the street. For those interested in seeing this bird in Boulder County, feel free to contact us off list for directions, information, and to schedule an appointment. [cobirds] Ovenbird, Blodgett Peak Open Space - El Paso County
While working with Rocky Mountain Field Institute on the Waldo Canyon Burn Scar today, I heard an Ovenbird singing in Blodgett Peak Open Space. Ovenbirds have been known to nest in Stratton Open Space near Colorado Springs, so this is not completely unprecedented, though nonetheless noteworthy. Unfortunately access to this area is restricted. Happy Trails, Lee Farese Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Re: Licensed wild bird rehabbers on the front range
For even further clarification, for raptor species there are a couple of other licensed rehabilitator options along the Front Range--The Rocky Mountain Raptor Program (located in Ft. Collins) and The Birds of Prey Foundation (located in Broomfield). Gail Kratz Rehabilitation Director Rocky Mountain Raptor Program Ft. [cobirds] Hot Birds in Hot Las Animas County, June 10-11
Hello, Birders. With a group from The Nature Conservancy in Colorado, I was a guest at two private ranches in Las Animas County the past two days, Monday-Tuesday, June 10-11. Yesterday afternoon, at a formation called Dripping Springs, we saw 2 SCOTT'S ORIOLES, 2 HEPATIC TANAGERS, and 1 BLACK-THROATED SPARROW. This remarkable hotspot is a bit like Las Chance, Lincoln County: It's a tiny little patch of water in a pit ringed by hackberries. The birds lining up to drink were fantastically diverse: multiple CASSIN'S KINGBIRDS, ASH-THROATED FLYCATCHERS, BUSHTITS, EASTERN PHOEBES, BLUE GROSBEAKS, you name it. But unlike Last Chance, which is surrounded by shortgrass prairie, Dripping Springs is surrounded by a mix of junipers, pinyon pine, a fair bit of ponderosa pine, and rocks, rocks, rocks. Some other birds in the general vicinity included GREATER ROADRUNNER and CURVE-BILLED THRASHER. This morning, in the Chacuaco Creek drainage, we saw 2 glorious GRAY VIREOS, 5 SUMMER TANAGERS, and 1 RUFOUS-CROWNED SPARROW. Also 10+ MISSISSIPPI KITES, 3 RED-HEADED WOODPECKERS, 4 BEWICK'S WRENS, 1 PINYON JAY, 3 CANYON TOWHEES, 2 LADDER-BACKED WOODPECKERS, 2 EASTERN PHOEBES, and 1 GREATER ROADRUNNER. It was 109 degrees Fahrenheit on our way out of La Junta, Otero County. But it's a dry heat... :-) See for yourself: tinyurl.com/Hot-La-Junta Ted Floydtedfloyd57@hotmail.comLafayette, Boulder County, Colorado -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] POMARINE JAEGER, Antero Res 6-11-13, Park Cty
Just a quick report for now - I found an adult POMARINE JAEGER at Antero Reservoir earlier this evening at the main SE fishing/camping area. I have SLR and digiscoped photos, but I think I'll wait til morning to fiddle with them since I just got home and am utterly exhausted from nearly two weeks of field work. -- Eric DeFonso Boulder, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
