[cobirds] Chukar in Gunnison/Saguache County
Not sure if I was in Gunnison County or had already crossed into Saguache County when I saw several Chukar this morning including several chicks. I was driving on Highway 114 south from Highway 50. The intersection is about 8 miles east of Gunnison. They were along Highway 114 between mile markers 8 and 12. Not sure if they are common in that area but since it was a life bird for me I thought I would share. [cobirds] Re: Great Blue Heron hunting prairie dogs??, Boulder County
In Florida I got a photo of Great Blue Heron with Common Moorhen in bill. A couple of years ago, I watched as a juvenile great blue heron caught a six-inch long fish, brought it up onto the grass 15 feet, peck at it twice, and then pick it up and put it back in the water, after which he went right back hunting. Now, I was surprised enough that he didn't eat the fish, but was amazed that he took it back to the water! What is that about? [cobirds] Hacked Email
Hi Folks, Loch Kilpatrick is at work, but he wants me to let everyone know that his email account was hacked this morning, resulting in many emails being sent out to everyone in his address book, and maybe others as well. PLEASE don’t click on or open any of the website links or attachments, since it may cause you further headaches. Loch’s very sorry, and will buy everyone a beer next time he sees you!!! [cobirds] Pomarine Jaeger at Adobe Creek Reservoir continues
Birders, I went out again to Adobe Creek Reservoir (Kiowa and Bent Counties) yesterday afternoon with Stan Oswald, and we secured pictures of the adult light-phase Pomarine Jaeger I'd found earlier in the day. It was in the same location, on the east side of the point of land jutting north into the reservoir in the SW corner of the remaining lake. I checked again for the presence of the jaeger just before noon today (6/19). It was in the exact same location where it was seen twice yesterday, this time swimming just offshore. The best place to look for the bird is the bay immediately east of the north end of the dredging project, conspicuous by the presence of two backhoes and lots of newly moved dirt. For county listers, you will be standing in Bent County when looking, and the bird will probably be in Kiowa County. I can report that roads leading to the lake from either the east or south (Bent County Road 10) are entirely passable even for passenger cars, and only have a few barely muddy spots in the immediate vicinity of Adobe Creek Reservoir. There has been a lot of rain (almost four inches) in Las Animas and at John Martin Reservoir the past six days, and some dirt roads elsewhere in the area are still impassable. Good luck if you search for this spectacular vagrant. Duane Nelson Las Animas, Bent County, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Boulder Red-eyed Vireo
At noon today I had a singing Red-eyed Vireo on the Boulder Open Space Trail that goes east from a trailhead on Marshall Road. [cobirds] Brown Bear in Genessee Mountain Park Sat June 15th
June 15, 2013 Genessee Mountain Park Mary and I birded Genessee Mountain Park late evening June 15 after 6.30 PM. Birds were very quiet. Only a few Robins, Western Bluebirds, a couple of Jays, but no Swallows, Nuthatches, or other expected birds. On the road to the Mountain top, we parked near the Nationally Protected Bird Nesting tree in the main picnic grounds. A police car was there. Soon after it left, a large shaggy brightly reddish brown bear moved up along a path a couple hundred yards from our car. The bear appeared to be a pregnant female, belly close to the gronnd. It looked like it knew where it was going and ignored us. It crossed the blacktop road, inspected the large outhouse, and moved on to inspect the trash barrels the large covered rocked open picnic hose built in the early 1900s.The gear move on out-if-sight. [cobirds] Dickcissel and Bobolink in Canon City still plus better news on viewing
I spent a little more time this morning at the hay field on MacKenzie Ave in Canon City where the Dickcissel and Bobolink I posted about last night are located. Though they are still only singing intermittently, the male Dickcissel did fly onto the utility wires located on the Grandview Ave (south) edge of this hay field--this both provided a safer viewing location as traffic is not nearly as bad as on MacKenzie and a better view since the tree limbs are not in the way of seeing the bird. In fact it flew onto the wire almost directly above me this morning and sang for a short time so I got a good photo of it. The Bobolink was still singing mostly from the field but did fly into a small tree on MacKenzie where I was able to get a reasonable photo. I have uploaded the photos of these birds to my Birds and Nature blog http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/. I will be leading a field trip to look for these and other special birds in the Canon City area this Sunday so email me if you are interested.
