[cobirds] REDDISH EGRET in Kiowa County

2013-07-05 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

This morning (July 5th) I observed a white-phase REDDISH EGRET at Adobe
Creek in Kiowa County. It was in the southeast corner of the shrunken
reservoir. It is almost due north of the main (closed) boat ramp, and
about 200 yards east of the easternmost camping group. There is a tiny
point east of the campers, and the bird was near, and east, of this
point. I was lucky enough to watch it canopy-feeding and photograph it.

2013-07-05 Thread Steve Brown
Hi COBirders,

Just had a male Rufous Hummer flash into and out of the yard, our first of the
season.

Average first date for them here is about 7/4, so basically right on schedule!

[cobirds] White Reddish Egret in Kiowa - origin

2013-07-05 Thread Steven Mlodinow
Greetings All

Just as a point of interest... the West Mexican subspecies of Reddish Egret
(that is, mostly around Gulf of California) lacks a white morph, so this bird
almost certainly came from the Gulf of Mexico.

[cobirds] Reddish Egret update

2013-07-05 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

I got a call from Lynne Miller that the adult white-phase Reddish Egret
was present at the same location at Adobe Creek Reservoir as recently as
4 p.m. today.

Lynne reminds potential visitors to park well back from the edge of the
lake. The beach substrate at Adobe Creek Reservoir is notably sticky,
and the experience of seeing good birds will be better if the story
doesn't involve tow trucks, or the kindness of good Samaritans.

Good luck,

Duane Nelson

[cobirds] More is Less in Boulder County

2013-07-05 Thread Ted Floyd

Hello, Birders.

As a public service to Boulder County birders, Hannah and Andrew and I earlier
this evening, Friday, July 5th, "trap-lined"--as we like to say--various
reservoirs in northern Boulder County. The things we do for you people.

We have established that there is a strong inverse relationship between water
level and birding quality.

Here's our summary:

Ish Reservoir is down a bit. We saw and heard 9 Willets. Also 7 Snowy Egrets, 3
Great Egrets, and a Bald Eagle.

McIntosh Reservoir is high, but with a bit of shoreline on the north side.
Scattered American Avocets, a Wood Duck, pellys aplenty, and both Aechmophorus
grebes. Also a persistently "singing" Bushtit--you know, giving that short
trill that they give on the breeding grounds. Cool that they're perhaps nesting
so far east in the county.

Jim Hamm Reservoir is getting low, it seems. 10 scattered American Avocets.

Terry Lake and nearby Clark Reservoir are extremely high. Terry had both
Aechmophori, and Clark had nothing.

Burch and McCall lakes, viewed only as we drove along Route 66, had high water
and cormorants.

Clover Basin Reservoir is up from the spring, but still with some shoreline on
the west side. We saw a Great Egret there.

Lagerman is down a bit, with some shoreline on the west side. Lots of corms and
pellys.

Boulder Rez is ridiculously high. Driving along the western perimeter, we heard
2 Dickcissels, a Wilson's Snipe, and a Virginia Rail.

I'd keep an eye, these next few weeks, on Ish and maybe Jim Hamm, Lagerman,
McIntosh, and Clover Basin. I wouldn't bother with Terry, Clark, Burch, McCall,
and The Rez. But just you watch: Ish will have nothing, and The Rez will get a
Large-billed Tern. That's the greatest thing about birding; you never know.

he saw it and it flew off towards the river. I did spot a Green Heron

[cobirds] Nesting Immature female Cooper's Hawk with nestlings in Fremont County

2013-07-05 Thread SeEtta Moss
Today I found a Cooper's Hawk nest with nestlings in it and I was very
surprised today to find an immature Cooper's Hawk defending the nest. I
found the following on the *Birds of North America* online site: "Usually 2
yr but year-old immatures reported as 6% to 22% of breeding females." I was
unaware that less than adult accipiters were able to breed before this. In
checking some references it appears that the immature female Cooper's is in
the transition from juvenal to Basic plumage. She had a need for more
space from humans than I had previously experienced with nesting Cooper's
Hawk and flew at me several times (as I was trying to leave) close enough I
felt the need to duck. I left the area and she settled down.

I got one good photo of the nest with nestlings (one shows nicely but looks
like more than one) and the head of the immature female behind the nestling
(didn't see it until I uploaded photos and cropped it) and one less good
photo that of the immature female that I have uploaded to my Birds and
Nature blog.
