Re: [cobirds] shrike

2013-10-23 Thread Joe Roller
An adult Northern Shrike was seen well on power lines in southern
Lincoln County during a DFO field trip on October 12. An Aiken
field trip only two days earlier found a Loggerhead Shrike near there.
Changing of the guard, I suppose.

[cobirds] Lost camera- Chatfield

2013-10-23 Thread Norm Lewis

Hi Cobirders- I was on the small point adjacent to the handicapped fisherman's
pier yesterday, looking at (and hoping to photograph) the jaeger. I put my
camera down on a rock and subsequently walked off and left it. It is a Pentax
DSLR with a Sigma zoom lens. If another birder happened to come along
afterward and found it, I'd be most grateful for help in retrieving it. I can
be reached at 303-910-1629.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. If I get any more forgetful I will
probably start losing body parts.

[cobirds] Possible Red Phalarope - Tower Rd - Adams County

2013-10-23 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
I had a strange birding morning today. Among the birds that I saw were a
phalarope (more on that in a moment), White-faced Ibis, dowitchers, and a
Cattle Egret.

My question is on the phalarope. It was a bit streaky and dark on the back,
but the bill seemed rather definitive for Red. It was much thicker than
you'd expect for the other phalaropes, and I believe some of the late stage
juveniles can be a bit darker and streakier on the back. I'm wondering if
anyone can help with the ID of this bird. It was in one of the lingering
flood puddles along Tower Rd just north of 96th Ave. That was also where
the ibis and the dowitchers were. The Cattle Egret was seen at Barr.

[cobirds] Re: Possible Red Phalarope - Tower Rd - Adams County

2013-10-23 Thread David Dowell
John, the phalarope is a great find -- definitely a RED PHALAROPE. The
bird you found looks very much like the bird at Barr Lake Monday evening
(the same bird?), which I was second guessing yesterday after finding a
Red-Necked Phalarope in the same area. Gray and black stripes could be
seen at a distance through a scope. Curiously, the gray and black striping
seems atypical of Red Phalarope photos I've seen elsewhere.

[cobirds] Phalarope Backs

2013-10-23 Thread Steven Mlodinow
Greetings All

The Tower Road phalarope appears to have a streaked back because it is molting
from juv to basic plumage (using terminology no longer in favor, here, but
widely understood)

Indeed, using back pattern on phalarope is fraught with problems, as basic
adult RN Phalaropes (of which I've seen some this fall) can appear totally gray
backed (and with limited black markings on head), much like a Red Phalarope.

And as the photo from Tower Road shows, juv Red Phalaropes in molt can appear
striped

[cobirds] White throated sparrows in Georgetown

2013-10-23 Thread Elena Holly Klaver
I was in Georgetown on a job and with extra time went over the Georgetown Lake
just east of town. There were only a couple of Pied Billed Grebes and some
Ring Necked Ducks on the lake, but in the willows I heard and then observed a
pair of White Crowned Sparrows. I am not always good with some sparrows, but
the White Crowned I know well from being a ranger in Vermont, and I was able to
get really good looks at these guys, pretty white throats and yellow lores and
all. They were foraging around, a lot on the ground, and making the "tseep"
calls. I thought it was a little unusual to find them up here, but there they
were.

[cobirds] Re: Surf Scoters Rocky Mountain Lake Park Denver County and Prospect Park Jefferson County

2013-10-23 Thread birderbob
10/23 The Rocky Mountain Lake Park Surf Scoter is still present as
of 1:30pm today. It was directly north of the playground area in the
middle of the lake. Both times I have seen it, it keeps close to a small
group of Ruddy Ducks but maintains enough distance to stand out - so my
advice for a quick find, is to look in spots where you see small groups
of Ruddy Ducks.

I can't take all the credit for finding the Prospect Scoter. I have to
share it with Marilyn Rhodes of Evergreen. It was her idea to go up there
and take a look.

I am afraid your camera in in the hands of one of the fisherman that was on the
dock when we were looking at the Pomarine yesterday about 2:00. He came up and
asked if we had lost a camera. We said no. But I had a suspicion that it was
a birders camera as I said that to my companions.

This is the first time I have seen this species at Chico Basin. I wonder if
anyone else has seen a Bald Eagle there? I also saw 4 Wood Ducks on Rice's
