Re: [cobirds] Sedge Wren, Cottonwood Glen/Spring Creek Trail, Larimer County
Great find, Brad. The wren was in the same spot at sundown. Hopefully it will stick around for others who search for it tomorrow. With weather moving in from the south, maybe it will stick around this weekend. [cobirds] Red Phalarope
This afternoon, I went over to try for the Tower Rd. and 96th Red Phalarope. Once I got to the right spot (about ¼ mile north of 96) it was easy to find in a large playa (well, actually it was in the small playa on the west side of the road with lots of Long-billed Dowitchers across from the large playa on the east side). Total of 5 shorebird species (including Pectoral), 6 dabbling ducks and a White-faced Ibis (right at 96th and Tower, though. Note that Glenn Walbek reported this as an ibis sp., but I am slightly confident that it is White-faced given its slightly red but uniformly colored legs). Since the White-faced Ibis was a new county bird, Adams is no longer my only county in CO with White Ibis, but not White-faced. Now it is my only county with Red Phalarope, but not Wilson's! [cobirds] Sedge Wren, Cottonwood Glen/Spring Creek Trail, Larimer County
Still reeling from not going to Dixon this morning and seeing the American Redstart that Arvind found, I went to Cottonwood Glen/Spring Creek Trail in West Fort Collins at about 1:30 to see what warblers I might find (Yellow-Rumped). No luck with rare warblers, however, I did happen upon a Sedge Wren. The bird was in some tall, thick (sedge?) grasses right along the trail, in a marshy collection of water; the grasses transitioned into cattails away from the trail. The bird was calling single-note "chat" calls, and I saw it pop up long enough to fire off some photos. I stayed some 30 minutes, and it would continue to call occassionally (generally single notes), but it pretty much stayed down in the grasses. I was able to get one shot that was a bit blurry but through the grasses that shows the back reasonably well. Link to all the photos (including very blurry ones) is here: https://picasaweb.google.com/105742165113837247842/SedgeWrenSpringCanyonPark24Oct2013?authuser=0&feat=directlink The location of this marshy collection area from the parking lot on the west side of the park: walk along the bike/walking trail, past the first bridge (where the trail turns north), and the marshy section is then some 25-30 yards and on the west side of the trail. [cobirds] El Paso county --- Surf Scoters
COBirders, Made a quick stop at Big Johnson reservoir and saw three SURF SCOTERs loafing amongst the thousands of birds on the water. The only other noteworthy things were the numbers of CANVASBACK seems to have increased, the number of WESTERN GREBEs fell off from 125 the other day to probably less than 30. Still a handful of FRANKLIN'S GULLs but not much else. - Mark Peterson Colorado Springs -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. [cobirds] Red Phalarope, Tower Road, Adams Co.
I photographed the Red Phalarope along Tower Rd this morning. Unfortunately, it was foggy and the light was not great. However you can see the thick, pale-based bill easily which by itself should eliminate Red-necked Phalarope. The bird appears to be a juvenile molting into basic plumage. The tertial and covert edges are very buffy and there is still remnant buff in the face and throat. A juvi RNPH should not have buff in the face and throat and an adult RNPH should not have buffy edges to the tertials and greater coverts. In addition to the Red Phalarope, the puddle contained a plegadis ibis, 8 Long-billed Dowitchers, a Least Sandpiper and a Pectoral Sandpiper that I spent much time studying. http://upload.pbase.com/gwalbek/image/153052052 Glenn Walbek Castle Rock, CO -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. Re: [cobirds] Possible Red Phalarope - Tower Rd - Adams County
John, I saw your Phalarope this morning and your description is spot on. I used my scope to get an extra close look at the head and back - the bill is definitely thick and really doesn't taper to a needle-like point. It was also short and almost appeared stubby compared to other phalaropes I've seen. The back was definitely in-between plummages and streaked with black and grey. I don't have enough experience to say one way or the other. I also noticed a small amount of rusty coloring on the upper throat - I am not certain if this would also be found on a red-necked. Anyway Thanks for sharing - was a beautiful bird to see up close. [cobirds] RMBO Barrow's Goldeneye Count!
Greetings, Please mark your calendar for Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory's fifteenth consecutive year of compiling count totals for Barrow’s Goldeneyes (BAGO) in Colorado! This year we will be accepting data collected from 22 November through 2 December. It is possible that all the BAGO found in Colorado in this time of year represents the portion of the species that breeds in the state. Therefore, by counting the birds in Colorado at this time of year, we are getting an idea of how the population of BAGO is doing. However, we don't really know for certain and it possible that some birds are coming from Wyoming or farther north. We would appreciate reports of any BAGO in Colorado during the count period, however, we also appreciate counts of all waterbird species present at each location visited. If participants would enter their count totals into eBird that would be much appreciated. I will check eBird for all BAGO reported during this time period for those of you that don't post on CoBirds or WSBN. Or, you can send count totals to me at this e-mail address or jason.bea...@rmbo.org. Here are the totals for each year of the count: 1999 – 226 at 8 sites 2000 – 107 at 16 sites (less effort) 2001 – 181 at 20 sites 2002 – 189 at 16 sites 2003 – 245 at 21 sites 2004 – 226 at 14 sites 2005 – 219 at 16 sites 2006 – 280 at 21 sites 2007 – 225 at 17 sites 2008 – 183 at 19 sites 2009 – 163 at 16 sites 2010 – 163 at 16 sites 2011 – 217 at 24 sites 2012 – 214 at 19 sites Thank you and Good Birding! -- Jason Beason Special Monitoring Projects Coordinator Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group.
