[cobirds] Boulder Co. Golden-crowned Sparrow

[cobirds] Situation at Two Buttes Reservoir (Baca)
The situation at Two Buttes Reservoir is mixed. I went east off US287 south of Lamar on Prowers County C/B.5 Road, then south on a road (12 Road?, unmarked in the DeLorme Atlas) that ultimately becomes 29.5(?) and then angles se to 30 Road once one crosses into Baca County. The reservoir itself is currently relatively full of water (relative to recent years) and has dropped a few feet from the unbelievable 35 foot depth it achieved a few months ago. Yesterday the water supported good numbers of waterfowl, including thousands of American Coots and hundreds of Ruddy Ducks. Small numbers of other common species were present. There was one Western Grebe, a few Eared Grebes, and one Double-crested Cormorant. I understand the res has been stocked for recreational fishing. A good grebe, loon, scoter, gull, swan, etc. certainly seems possible. Yesterday's waterfowl report listing only common species should be tempered by the fact large areas of the northwest part of the reservoir are not viewable due to flooded cottonwoods and other access issues. The only way to view the res is from the dam road itself looking west, and from access roads north of the dam that go west from the n-s county road (29.5/30 Road) running west of Two Buttes Mountain. Follow signs for the Boat Ramp. The road over the dam (29.5/30 Road) is open but access to the south side of the res (and ultimately US287 on Baca VV Road) from the south side of the dam is closed. Major earth work is underway south of the dam on both the east and west sides of the dam road to prepare the spillway for a 10,000-year storm, according to a local DPW officer we talked to the other day. The road below the dam, formerly accessed from the north side of the dam, is closed indefinitely. Looking down into the area from the dam, it appears the major issue is a small but significant washout of the road just w of the wide parking area that accesses the area known locally as The Black Hole. Perhaps the road (unviewable from the dam) from the afforementioned parking area east to the private gate is also damaged. Regardless, no human activity is allowed below the dam according to the closure sign and there is no indication of when access might be restored. My guess would be several months, if not longer, but who knows? Dave Leatherman Fort Collins -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow--Red Rocks/Jeffco
Today, as I pulled into the Red Rocks Trading Post I saw the post by Christian Nunes that the Teller Farm's Golden-crowned Sparrow returned. The feeders and the ground were void of seed. I threw down some millet and waited for the birds to show up. The first bird out of the thicket was the dapper Golden-crowned Sparrow!! This is the fourth year this bird has wintered at Red Rocks. He first showed up as an immature in the winter of 2009. I watched the area for 45 minutes and had Scrub Jays(10), White-crowned Sparrow(1), Song Sparrows(3) Juncos(10), Spotted Towhees(3), Pine Sisken(1), and the other typical Red Rocks birds. This is the time of the year when the Red Rocks feeders can get interesting! Photos of this bird can be seen at the gallery below: http://jaeger29.smugmug.com/BIRDS/RARE-AND-UNCOMMON-2013/i-kLjMQF3 . [cobirds] Found: One glove at the Loveland brant location
In your haste to get a photograph of the Larimer County brant, did you throw your glove on the ground? If so, and you want it back, let me know. [cobirds] Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Adams CO.
The previously reported Swamp Sparrow in the marsh on the SW corner of Lake Ladora was still present this afternoon. It proved easier to see than the female Black Scoter on adjacent Lower Derby Lake, given the huge number of coots and diving ducks present. [cobirds] Pueblo birds 10/29
A few highlights today around Pueblo Reservoir: Laughing Gull - 1 adult basic plumage was seen in the SWA, looking west Lesser Black-backed Gull - 1 first year off West Fishing Road looking west Common Loon - 1 middle of the Reservoir, I saw it from the South Shore Marina Below the dam in Rock Canyon, there were three White-throated Sparrows (two adults and one immature). Yesterday, there was a Juniper Titmouse with Mountain Chickadees in the juniper trees at the parking lot at West Fishing Road at Pueblo Reservoir. I photographed a very lateWestern Kingbird in Pueblo, on 26 October. http://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/1054244/in/set-72157637059423143 Any kingbird in Colorado, this late needs to be looked at carefully, unfortunately this bird wasn't a Tropical/Couch's Kingbird or a Thick-billed Kingbird, which might show up this late in the year. One Thick-billed Kingbird did show up in late October in the early 1990s in Denver. [cobirds] Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in eastern Pueblo County
I spotted my first of the season Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk this afternoon in eastern Pueblo County. I was able to get a few good photos of it in flight and I have uploaded them to my Birds and Nature bloghttp://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/. I looked with negative results for additional Harlan's Hawks going east through La Junta where they are known to spend the fall/winter.
