[cobirds] Update CBC dates (excel file)

2013-11-25 Thread Scott E. Severs
Note the change in date of the Flagler CBC led by Bill Kaempfer. I have all
but four dates of the 50 Colorado CBCs. Left me know of any changes in your
CBC if you are a compiler. Thank you all for your help.

Re: [cobirds] Prothonotory Warbler @ 9AM Centennial Park, Arapahoe Cty

2013-11-25 Thread BirdNerd's Email
Gary (and others),

I apologize for not leaving more details about how to get there - I myself
wasn't sure where it was when I first saw the reports. My savior was signing
up for the rarity reports from ebird where each sighting triggers an email with
who made the sighting and links to a map of the sighting, the checklist for
observer, photos if available, and notes from the observer.

If you don't mind a lot of e-mails you can set them to come within an hour of a
rarity sighting by county. I hope that helps for the future-

[cobirds] Gull ID help - Aurora - Arapahoe County

2013-11-25 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
I was wondering if someone could help me with a couple of gull IDs. These
are both from Aurora Reservoir, where I thought I'd take a look at some of
the birds seen yesterday. I'm larus challenged, however, so I could use
all the help I can get.

The first bird, I'm calling an immature Glaucous Gull. It is a large bird,
bi-colored (pink with black tip) bill, pink legs, pale color, whitish
wingtips, dark eye:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/breitschbirding/11057340496/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/breitschbirding/11057406753/

The second I'm just calling a gull. I didn't notice any dark or black wing
tips on this one. It also seemed bigger than all the birds around it and
had a slightly less streaked head.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/breitschbirding/11057335046/in/photostream/

I apologize for the over sharpening and lack of perfect field mark views.
There are other shots of these, and one I'm calling a Lesser Black-backed
Gull.

[cobirds] 5 Tundra Swans, Sombrero Marsh, Boulder County + Prairie Falcon

2013-11-25 Thread Maureen Blackford
Hello,

At 10:30am on Monday 11/25, there were 5 Tundra Swans on Sombrero Marsh,
Boulder County. One was adult, with the yellow lores. The other 4 didn't
have the yellow, but had the same bill size, with the rounded border at the top
of the bill, and curve at the gape. (They look like the "1st Summer" pictures
in Sibley's Guide.)The pond is starting to ice up, so they swim back and
forth at the southeast section of the pond.

Sombrero Marsh is 1 block south of 63rd & Arapahoe in Boulder.

There was a prairie falcon (adult) sitting in the cottonwood tree over Naropa,
at the northwest corner of 63rd & Arapahoe.

RE: [cobirds] Prothonotory Warbler @ 9AM Centennial Park, Arapahoe Cty

2013-11-25 Thread William H Kaempfer
Here is another suggestion for confirming directions for most of these
rarities; one that I use all the time.

Go to the CFO Website http://cfobirds.org/ as Joe suggests. In the lower
right corner of the home page is a list generated automatically from eBird
showing most recent eBird observations from Colorado that have required
additional details as part of their submission to eBird. Each of these
sightings comes with species and county information and a notation that shows
if the observation has been reviewed by an eBird reviewer (typically a timing
issue). However, there is also a map function. Click on "map" and you will go
to a Google Maps site showing where the bird was observed. There are a couple
of caveats, however; first, the map pushpin sites the general area (Centennial
Park, in this case) not where in the park, and second, sometimes the observer
has reported the observation with a generic county or even state location. In
this case, however, Centennial Park is shown as off Union between S. Santa Fe
Dr. and S. Federal.

By the way, if you are really interested in exploring rarities across the
nation there is a change tab that lets you pick a different state. Going to
Texas for Thanksgiving? Don't miss the rare and illusive Ring-billed Gull
reported in Webb County (Laredo) yesterday! Or you could find that the last
reports for Amazon Kingfisher were from Saturday.

Hi,

Can I get some confirmation of WHICH Centennial Park is referenced? There's
one
in Englewood, and then there's the new one by the Centennial City buildings
east
of I-25 on Arapahoe?

Thanks!
