Subject: [cobirds] Question regarding Juncos at Fawn Brook Inn, Allenspark

Among the 6 Juncos at Fawn Brook Inn Sunday were two that appeared to be of
the White-winged race. Does anyone know if they were likely that race or
what Sibley describes as the rare Slate-colored with white wing bars. We
were unable to compare body or bill size with the others as they kept
separate and our camera battery died so no pics.

Other birds seen were 1 female Evening Grosbeak a resting (appeared sickly)
BC and MT Chickadees a flitting , 7 Steller's Jays a pushing, 5 Pygmy
Nuthatches a hopping, Downy and Hairy Woodpeckers a drumming (male and
female of both species), and one Magpie and House Finch each, sorry no
Partridge.

[cobirds] Welcome to the New Colorado County Birding Website!

2013-11-27 Thread Rachel Hopper
Colorado Field Ornithologists is pleased to announce that the newly updated
Colorado County Birding website is now live at:
http://coloradocountybirding.org/ http://coloradocountybirding.org/

There have been plenty of upgrades and many great new features have been
added.

eBird Hotspots are now included under most county sites and will continue to
be added as they become available to us. BirdTrax is available on every
county and hotspot site page. On these pages, using easy to find links, you
can easily connect to eBird Seasonal Charts and to a list of Colorado Bird
Record Committee accepted reports for any county or hotspot site.

Take a look at Boulder County. It is a good example with plenty of hotspots
plus a chance to check out BirdTrax:
http://cobirds.org/ByCounty.aspx?CountyID=7

One of the newest features is the ability to create and print your own
checklist for any site. These checklists are stored on the County Birding
website and available for everyone to use:
http://cobirds.org/CreateChecklist.aspx
http://cobirds.org/CreateChecklist.aspx

Notice a bird missing from the official county checklist? Request a species
addition using the form available here:
http://cobirds.org/RequestSpeciesAddition.aspx
http://cobirds.org/RequestSpeciesAddition.aspx

Don't have the time to be an editor but want to suggest a site? Go to:
http://cobirds.org/SuggestASite.aspx and let us know about it.

And one of the most important new features is that the County Birding
website has been designed to render well on a Smartphone or iPad to be more
useful in the field. I would encourage you to try it on your phone or iPad
while out birding!

Take a look through the site and let us know what you think. See a problem?
On every page there is a link to contact the editor with corrections and
suggestions and we encourage you to use it.

We are also looking for folks that would be interested in becoming county
editors for the Colorado County Birding website. This is an ongoing
commitment and involves updating county and site information. If you have a
good knowledge of some (or even one!) Colorado counties and want to help
share that information, please let me know and we can get you signed up.
There are plenty of counties left to edit!

Thanks and enjoy the new site.

[cobirds] Long-tailed Duck-Terry Lake-Boulder Cnty

2013-11-27 Thread Russ Thompson
This morning at 8:45 I saw a female Long-tailed Duck on Terry Lake in
Longmont, Boulder County. I could not find the Barrow's Goldeneye reported
earlier, but it certainly could be there. Hundreds of Ring-billed Gulls,
along with many Bonaparte's and some Herring Gulls are near the west shore
of the lake and are seen best from 95th St about 2 miles north of Hwy 66.
Hundreds of Common Goldeneyes and Common Mergansers are also present, as
well as Pied-bill Grebes, a few Horned Grebes, Buffleheads, Hooded
Mergansers, and other species, exacerbating the problem of finding a single
bird. It is certainly fun looking though, and there may be other uncommon
species mixed in the bunch. Best viewed with a scope, although many birds
are near the shore.

[cobirds] Costa's Hummingbird (El Paso)

2013-11-27 Thread Bill Maynard
COBirders,

Sorry about this long version but.

On 1 November an unidentified hummingbird, nicknamed Friday because of the
day of the week on which it was found, was seen in a gated estate in
Colorado Springs. The finders of the hummingbird put up a sugar water feeder
and wrote to Aiken Audubon seeking information on methods needed to keep the
bird alive but the message was delayed until the 26th. Eventually
photographs of the bird were obtained by the finders, caretakers on the
estate, and the photos were circulated to a few birders. Those who viewed
the photographs believed the bird was likely a Costa's Hummingbird, only 6
accepted records for Colorado. When the bird was still alive on 26
November, Jeannie Mitchell contacted the caretakers and discussed the
natural history of our hummingbirds, and in particular information on
wintering attempts by hummingbirds in sub-zero temperatures. Jeannie asked
for permission to view and photograph the bird. Three local birders were
admitted to the narrow courtyard of the caretakers' house in Colorado
Springs. After 30 minutes the hummer came to the feeder, also perching in a
nearby tree. The hummingbird visited the feeder about every 30 minutes
(3x). The bird is a 1st year male Costa's Hummingbird, in molt, as is
evident by the gorget color and shape, white belly and white stripe behind
the eye, the short, pumping tail, and by comparing it to Anna's Hummingbird
photographs. While viewing this bird is currently not a possibility to
interested birders, a representative of Aiken Audubon will talk to the
caretakers after Thanksgiving to inquire if they (and especially the owner
of the property) would consider allowing birders access during designated
times of the day. There are a number of access issues that would need to be
resolved before permission could be granted but in the very least another
very cool bird at a late date in Colorado. I will post a couple
photographs of the hummingbird on the CFO Facebook pages in a bit.

Happy Thanksgiving to all,

Bill Maynard

[cobirds] Larimer County gulls - possible adult Vega Gull

2013-11-27 Thread quetzal65
I visited the Larimer County landfill this afternoon expecting to find the
mother load of gulls, but was disappointed. There was a decent flock of 500 or
so, with a couple of adult Lesser Black-backed and good numbers of Herring and
California accompanying the throng of Ring-billed Gulls. I ended the day at
Horseshoe Lake in Loveland, which continues to be excellent for gulls. There
were 3 Lesser Black-backed (2 adults and a first-cycle) and plenty of Herring,
California and Ring-billed, plus a pod of 35 Bonaparte's Gulls. Of note was a
dark-mantled adult Herring Gull that fit the description for Vega Gull (Larus
argentatus vegae). This bird would be a vagrant in Colorado although single
adults that resemble this species have been showing up annually. It breeds
mainly in Siberia. The Europeans consider it a full species separate from
Herring Gull. There is a page dedicated to it in the Sibley Guide on p. 217.
The Horseshoe Lake bird was a dead ringer for the Adult Nonbreeding plumage
depicted in the Sibley Guide. Hopefully it will stick around and pose for
documentation photos.
