[cobirds] South Platte Park area and Chatfield SP 12/10
At South Platte Reservoir this morning an adult PEREGRINE FALCON was perched on a pole at the southwest corner of the road that skirts the reservoir, and a PRAIRIE FALCON was perched where the road first comes alongside the reservoir. 3 LONG-TAILED DUCKS were on the reservoir, which had a moderate assortment of other waterfowl, including 12 REDHEADS. A BALD EAGLE flew over heading north. Seven BALD EAGLES were perched in trees around Eaglewatch Lake, a MERLIN flew over to the southeast, and a nice adult HARLAN'S RED-TAILED HAWK was along the river. Along the entry road to Chatfield SP there was a SAY'S PHOEBE and a TOWNSEND'S SOLITAIRE, and a male MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD flew over the area. A PRAIRIE FALCON flew over, perhaps the same as seen earlier at South Platte Res., but maybe not. A juv. NORTHERN SHRIKE was near the North Boat Launch, 7 BALD EAGLES were standing on the ice at various parts of the frozen reservoir. No gulls were near the boat launch. The Model Airplane area had a juv. PEREGRINE FALCON, and juv. ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK, both heading south. The only gull around the marina area was a lone BONAPARTE'S GULL that came in for a look see and moved on. A RED-NECKED GREBE was in the small area of open water with many other birds, and a GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE flew in with a group of Cacklers. A MERLIN flew over West Coal Mine between Kipling and Wadsworth. David Suddjian Littleton -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "Colorado Birds" group. RE: [cobirds] Snowy Owls in the NE
I was stunned to see my friend Betty Petersen in the first minutes of the video. Receiving news of her passing in June 2013 greatly saddened me, so it really warmed my heart to see her "being Betty" - snapping photos of the Snowy Owl and showing her sense of wonder. Thank you, Kathy, for sharing the video. -Original Message- From: cobirds@googlegroups.com [mailto:cobirds@googlegroups.com] On Behalf Of Kathy and Jeff Dunning Sent: Tuesday, December 10, 2013 2:22 PM To: Colorado Birds Subject: [cobirds] Snowy Owls in the NE Greetings - As many of you are aware, the northeast has been experiencing a Snowy Owl invasion which borders on mind boggling. [cobirds] Long-tailed ducks at South Platte Reservoir, Jefferson County
Hi all, This morning around 10:15 a small group of Tuesday Birders saw 2 long-tailed ducks on South Platte Reservoir in Jefferson County. They appeared to be near the center of the reservoir and were diving regularly. Shortly after noon a larger group of Tuesday Birders relocated the ducks. This time they appeared to be closer to the eastern side of the reservoir. The group also found both a peregrine and a prairie falcon on the telephone poles on the western and southern edges of the reservoir. Numerous other expected duck and raptor species were also present in the park. [cobirds] Boulder dumb turkeys
The wind continues to be nasty, at least here in the foothills here in Boulder, so I haven't left home yet today. Sixteen Wild Turkeys spent the last hour and a half in my yard and along the driveway. After they arrived, I threw several pounds of sunflower seeds out both inside and outside of our fence. They're so stupid that they have a hard time remembering that they have the capability to get over a five-foot rail fence, hence the food on both sides of the fence. When the flock finally moved on, one of the birds that was inside the fencing got left behind and spent about five minutes frantically running back and forth along the fence as if it was trapped. I decided to step out and photograph that bird, and it seemed a bit more nervous due to my presence, but still couldn't remember how to get over the fence. Then the big dog bounded out through the doggie door and was attracted to the turkey. As you can imagine, the bird's adrenaline kicked in and it remembered how to fly to escape the dog. Is any bird dumber than a turkey? Thursday begins count week in Boulder, and turkeys are not always easy. I was going to Murdoch's to get more bird food today anyway, and I'll add 50# of corn to the list, and try to keep the turkeys around for the count. [cobirds] Red Rocks and S Platte at 74th - Jefferson/Adams
I was going to do some birding in the mountains/foothills, but circumstances changed my plans. Since I was very much over dressed for birding around town, I kept things short. I have very little to note. At Red Rocks, I saw only three Gray-crowned Rosy Finches and no Golden-crowned Sparrow. I wasn't really looking for the sparrow and I didn't stay long, so that means pretty much nothing. I missed an oregon junco, but all the other subspecies were accounted for. Along the South Platte, I only walked from the 74th Ave parking lot to about where 78th meets the trail. In between there, just over halfway from the 74th parking lot was a Harris's Sparrow spending time with all the Song and American Tree Sparrows. I'm about one day too early for it to count on the CBC week. Good luck re-finding that one, though. There is a very lengthy bit of good sparrow habitat to sort through. The bird wasn't singing but it was rather chatty with its chip notes. In the same area was a Yellow-rumped Warbler. All the usual ducks and raptors made appearances.
