Observation start time: 08:30:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 6.5 hours

Official Counter:Scott Severs

Observers:Joe Lupfer, Karen Lupfer, Mitchell Blystone

Visitors:
We visited with 5 people about the hawkwatch. Trail had large numbers of
hikers and mountain bikers. Trail was moderately muddy.

Weather:
Wind averaged 6-11 km/h, shifting from W to SE to N at end of day.
Temperate averaged around 12ºC throughout day. Visibility was good, around
30 km with little haze. Mostly cloudy increasing from 40% to nearly 100% at
end of count.

Raptor Observations:
Excellent help today from Mitchell Blyston, and Joe and Karen Lupfer. Bulk
of migration observations occurred between 0900 and 1200 with 40 birds seen
(over half were Turkey Vultures). Only 6 additional migrant raptors were
seen after 1200. Eight species were seen. Local raptors observed included
Red-tailed Hawks, American Kestrels, Sharp-shinned Hawk, and Turkey
Vulture. Most birds were observed west of ridge.

Non-raptor Observations:
Other species observed in order of detection included: Spotted Towhee,
Black-billed Magpie, Western Meadowlark, House Finch, American Robin,
Dark-eyed Junco, Townsend's Solitaire, Western Scrub-Jay, Northern Flicker,
Eurasian Collard-Dove, Common Raven, Mountain Chickadee, American Crow,
White-throated Swift, Mountain Bluebird, Rock Wren, Violet-green Swallow,
Western Bluebird, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, Black-capped Chickadee, and
Bushtit.

Predictions:
Cool conditions and scattered showers may hamper thermal creation and limit
raptor migration. Expect increasing numbers of migrant raptors daily as we
approach the peak for Dinosaur Ridge in mid to late April.

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from the Rocky Mountain
Bird Observatory from about 9 AM to around 4 PM from the first week of
March to the first week of May.

[cobirds] Fox & Golden-crowned Sparrows - Red Rocks - Jeffco

2014-04-05 Thread Michael Henwood
Hello All,

This morning our Aubudon of Greater Denver Master Birder field trip started out
with a migrant Slate-colored Fox Sparrow along with the winter resident
Golden-crowned Sparrow at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post. Most
years the Golden-crowned can be seen through the first week of May. Still have
all the various sub-species of juncos as well.

The pair of Peregrine Falcons are back on Ship Rock (upper South Parking Lot)
and are in courtship mode. The pair of Prairie Falcons are using Park Cave Rock
again and it appears that the female is ready to start incubating in the next
few days.

[cobirds] cranes, etc.

2014-04-05 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.
Here's a nice article, in "Steamboat Today," on waiting and watching for
Sandhill Cranes in Routt County:
http://tinyurl.com/cranes-in-steamboat
Oh, and I heard a Sandhill Crane in Boulder County! Sort of. Back on Wednesday,
April 2nd, David Gillilan and I heard a remarkably talented European Starling
at South Teller Farms; the bird was imitating, among other things, the bugling
of a Sandhill Crane. David Sibley tells me that that talented starling was
still there, and still mimicking other birds, yesterday, Friday, April 4th.
To the north, near Teller Lake No. 5, the Golden-crowned Sparrow was hanging on
at the usual spot yesterday. It was with White-crowns, one of which was a
white-lored x dark-lored hybrid that David S. photo-documented. Also
Great-tailed Grackles and FOS Turkey Vulture and Cliff Swallow. And western
chorus frogs galore.

[cobirds] White-tailed Ptarmigan (clear Creek County)

2014-04-05 Thread Nick Komar
I am guiding out-of-state birders today and we were blessed with calm weather
at Loveland Pass. Likewise, 5 ptarmigan obliged us on the north side of the
pass, seen well through scopes from the parking area looking west.

Today there were 2 Horned Grebe at Manitou Lake. Apparently, Horned Grebe
are unusual in Teller County. They are not on the county list (

[cobirds] USPS Songbird stamps

2014-04-05 Thread Tom Wilberding

Hello birders,

For those of us who still send paper mail from time to time, the Post
Office, starting today, is selling Songbird stamps online, first class
forever.
Why do I mention this on COBirds? Well, some of these beautiful stamps show
Colorado birds, so I’m in the clear. Enjoy!
