[cobirds] 5 Great Egrets in Canon City, Evening Grosbeak and Franklin's Gulls continue in Canon City area

2014-04-19 Thread SeEttaM .
Late yesterday 5 Great Egrets perched in the trees at Sell's Lake just off
the Canon City Riverwalk, first of the year birds in this area. The
Evening Grosbeak I reported in City on the bluff next tot the Riverwalk are
still here. Though they likely are going to feeders in the residences
there, they were enjoying the tender tips of the new foilage when I saw
them yesterday.

I realized I forgot to mention the very large number of Franklin's Gulls
that arrived last weekend with the snow storm. On Monday I found almost
500 of them with the largest number at Brush Hollow Reservoir (about 250),
about 150 in agricultural fields in Canon and another 100 in ag fields in
Florence. This is the largest number of Franklin's Gulls I have ever seen
in the Canon City area. And though the numbers have diminished, there are
still around 200 still around.

Observation start time: 09:00:00
Observation end time: 15:00:00
Total observation time: 6 hours

Official Counter:Lee Farrell

Observers:Mitchell Blystone

Visitors:
Collin Paul who visited the station briefly last Saturday was back again
this week and made some good spots of birds. Justin Dee, a hawkwatcher at
the ridge years ago, stopped by and helped spot for a couple of hours.

Chip Clouse led a group known as the "Kids of Old Town Arvada" on a
birding excursion today that ended with a visit to the station. We spoke
with them for quite a while, the Red-tailed Hawk attacks on the Golden
Eagle provided the highlight of their visit.

Weather:
Skies were overcast throughout most of the morning. Light winds varying
from 1 to 3 bft out of the east and moderately warm temperatures in the
high 50s to low 60s provided for a comparatively nice day weather wise on
the ridge. Around noontime the skies parted enough to produce some welcome
sunshine.

Raptor Observations:
Another strange day on the ridge, good weather conducive to migration
produced only 6 migrating raptors. Typically at the height of migration
season, April 19th has produced counts of 18, 38 and 22 birds in 2011, 2012
and 2013 respectively.

Local raptors had no problem gaining significant altitudes and moving
rapidly around and through the area. A group of 6 Turkey Vultures circled
up far south of the ridge, promptly moving west only to disappear in the
area of Mt. Falcon Open Space. Six or more Red-tailed Hawks appeared from
time to time throughout the day. Two of them relentlessly harassed a local
sub-adult Golden Eagle driving it back to west ridge where they engaged it
further. A local Cooper's Hawk and American Kestrel were also observed.

Non-raptor Observations:
A slow day for non-raptors, surprisingly not a single raven or crow was
sighted. Two Rock Wrens provided the highlight of the day. Other birds
seen or heard included: Black-billed Magpie, Western Meadowlark, Western
Scrub-Jay, White-throated Swift, Northern Flicker, Spotted Towhee and House
Finch.

Predictions:
Hopefully the daily numbers will improve, only the birds know for sure.
The count thus far in 2014 is currently on par with 2012 when a total of
only 777 birds was counted, 2011 and 2012 had 1171 and 1100 total birds.

As of April 19th in 2011, 2012 and 2013 we had counted a total of 15, 11
and 14 Ospreys respectively. Thus far in 2014 we have only counted 2.

We should have begun to see Broad-winged and Swainson's Hawks by now,
their counts remain at 0 for the year.

[cobirds] Equalizer Lake, Larimer Co.; April 19

2014-04-19 Thread Scott Baron
Hello,

I found a late American Tree Sparrow in a mixed sparrow flock adjacent to
Equalizer Lake today. Decent looks at the bird as it perched low and fed
on the ground.

In recent visits to Equalizer Lake/Houts Reservoir I've been seeing a
Lesser Black-backed Gull. The other bird(s) was an adult but today's bird
or birds (there may have been two) appeared to be a second cycle.

Gadwall have replaced most of the ducks. Western and Clark's Grebe are
back in full force. Say's Phoebes have been present in the area over the
past week.

Happy birding and Happy Easter.

Female Bufflehead at Dillon dam in small retainage pond next to large stand of
willows.

Putting on quite a show.

She would take-off from one side of pond then land in water and glide to other
side. Then she'd turn-around and do it again. She kept it up for awhile; then
took off towards Silverthorne; possible destination? the Blue River?

[cobirds] Tree Swallows - Dillon, Summit County

2014-04-19 Thread Ed Baker
First Swallows of the season.

Early Fri a.m. as I was walking my dogs prior to heading for the slopes, wah
lah Tree Swallows at almost all nest sites along bike path along Lake
Dillon. They were not there Thurs night so they arrived during the night or
early morning.

As I type it's now raining; don't know what that does for their food supply.
Might be getting pretty skimpy. Will they be okay?

[cobirds] Tempel Grove, Bent County 4/19/14

2014-04-19 Thread Duane Nelson

Birders,

I got a call from Mark Peterson this morning that Tempel Grove in Bent
County would be worth checking out, as he and Glenn Walbek had found a
Yellow-throated Warbler, Black-throated Gray Warbler and Orange-crowned
Warbler. I called Janeal Thompson in Lamar, and together, we saw all
three of these birds. The Black-throated Gray Warbler sang a song that
was barely recognizable for that species (I speculated that it might
even have problems attracting a mate).

Additionally, we had a male Black-and-White Warbler (probably the same
individual I had there a few days earlier). We also flushed a Common
Poorwill near the brush piles west of the bridge.

The first three Warblers were on the south side of the canal, in tall
cottonwoods at the extreme west edge of the woods on the west side of
Road 35, south of the brush piles near the canal. The Black-and-White
Warbler was near the memorial bench east of Road 35. Eastern Phoebes
have built a conspicuous nest under the east side of the bridge.

[cobirds] Gilpin County birding

2014-04-19 Thread William H Kaempfer
I did some birding at favorite spots around Gilpin County this morning. Of
note were two Fox Sparrows singing along the road to the Moffat Tunnel, one on
either side of Tolland. In addition I found a Red-naped Sapsucker just east of
Tolland. Los Lagos Lakes had one Osprey that I could see, that's an expected
species as they have nested here for years. What wasn't expected was an adult
Bald Eagle sitting on a nest (though not the Osprey nest-the eagle's nest was
tucked away a bit in the trees on the south side of the lake). The lake itself
was still 80% ice, but it did have one Bufflehead among the 5 ducks of 4
species present. At nearby Manchester Lake a pair of Great Blue Herons were
also occupying a nest.

[cobirds] Glossy Ibis, Boulder COunty

2014-04-19 Thread Todd Deininger
>From Peter Gent:

All,

At 11:40 this morning there was a Glossy Ibis in the flock of Ibis at a
pond on the west side of 109th Street just north of Jasper Road. This is
in east Boulder County, just east of Highway 287 between Arapahoe Rd and
Hwy 52. Also, the breeding plumaged Common Loon, reported by Bill
Kaempfer last Thursday, is still at Baseline Reservoir visible from
Cherryvale Road.

Cheers, Peter Gent.

[cobirds] Pueblo birds 4/19

2014-04-19 Thread Brandon K. Percival

Several birders, were able to see a female Williamson's Sapsucker in Pueblo
City Park this morning, in the pines not too far from the Administration
building.  Paul Hurtado spotted a Green Heron on the island on the west side of
Pueblo City Park this morning too, that several of us got to see.  At least
Pygmy Nuthatches and one Red-breasted Nuthatch continue in Pueblo City Park as
well.

After leaving Pueblo City Park, at Valco Ponds parking lot, along Hwy 96, a
Broad-winged Hawk flew by.  The Osprey Picnic Area in Rock Canyon, had quite a
few Yellow-rumped Warbler, though I didn't find anything with them.

Afternoon highlights on the El Paso County side, of Chico Basin Ranch (fee
area), was a Black-and-white Warbler at the Bell Grove (found earlier in the
day) and a Gray Flycatcher that Bill Maynard found in the olives at the banding
station.

[cobirds] Black Phoebe - Manitou Lake - Teller County

2014-04-19 Thread Robb Hinds
Today I saw a Black Phoebe or Black x Eastern Phoebe at Manitou Lake. I
have asked a couple of people who see a lot of Black and Eastern Phoebes
for their opinion. The bird was near the Tassle-eared Squirrel sign. It was
still there at 12:30.

There was also a Wood Duck in the same area which is unusual at Manitou
Lake.

[cobirds] Douglas Reservoir (LARIMER) - Fort Collins Audubon field trip

2014-04-19 Thread John Shenot
Fort Collins Audubon sponsored a nice little field trip to Douglas
Reservoir this morning, but with lighter attendance than usual. The four of
us that had the good sense to show up were treated to an Osprey dive right
in front of us (successful), a California gull trying to gulp down a fish
that was a wee bit too big, three combative Kingfishers (one of which was
NOT welcomed by the other two), a pair of Common Loons, a very
cooperatively perched Loggerhead Shrike, and a slightly less cooperative
Merlin.
