[cobirds] Glossy and hybrid plegadis ibis, Eastern Phoebe and foy Cassin's Kingbird in Canon City area
There was a very large flock of plegadis ibis in Florence this morning (Wednesday) numbering between 250 and 300. I observed two birds that had field marks consistent with Glossy Ibis and one that was clearly a hybrid. The two Glossy Ibis were actively feeding so moving in and out of the flock so I couldn't get reasonable photos of them. They hybrid had bathed then stayed in one spot to groom so I did get several good photos showing the line of blue bare skin going around the back of the eye. It is showed a reddish caste to it's eyes and plum coloration to the bare skin between the lines of bare skin. I have uploaded these photos to my Birds and Nature blog http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com. I refound an Eastern Phoebe at the Florence River Park, I suspect the same one I reported over a week ago and saw again two days ago (but failed to note it in my post as I was fighting off a bout of acute bronchitis that was likely facilitated by the blowing dust in the Lamar area during last week's big dust storms there).. I haven't seen the Black Phoebe in that area for several weeks. I found a first of the year Cassin's Kingbird near Brush Hollow Reservoir. [cobirds] On the way home from Lamar
My two-week visit to Lamar ended today. Total species in the immediate Lamar area: 126. At LCC before heading north were several (7?) MacGillivray's Warblers, 2 Least Flycatchers, a Black-headed Grosbeak, multiple courtship displays by male Black-chinned Hummingbirds, two Northern Waterthrushes, a Plumbeous Vireo, a bunting (buzz heard), a Lincoln's Sparrow, a juv Broad-winged Hawk (at one point whistling that strange song of theirs), at least 3 Northern Cardinals, and one Red-bellied Woodpecker (heard only). On the way home I stopped at the Truck Plaza nw of town - NO Laughing Gull. At the Eads Cemetery I had a molting male FOY Blue Grosbeak (Kiowa). Nothing of note in the Eads park by the library/police station. At Last Chance (Washington) were 28 species, best being a Common Poorwill near the old motel. Don't know what Lamar has to do to get a measurable rain. The farmers need a good downpour badly. All they seem to get are hopeful forecasts followed by wind and dirt. The Limon area is noticeably greener. When I got to Fort Collins it was obvious a heavy rain shower had occurred this afternoon, and all evening there was rain, thunder, and lightning. [cobirds] Re: Flagler SWA (Kit Carson County) Birds
I was out at Flagler earlier yesterday. I missed Bill's Hooded, but picked up a female Chestnut-sided Warbler. There were also good numbers of MacGillavray's Warblers around. Fairly slow otherwise. [cobirds] Worm-eating Warbler, Lamar (Prowers)
Very recently this morning, Janeal Thompson found a Worm-eating Warbler in the big junipers in the southeast corner of the Lamar Community College Woods (i.e. just north of the houses). She reported a big influx of birds since yesterday, with yet another wave of Hermit Thrushes replacing the ones I was speculating yesterday had sort of cleared out to make way for the expected everywhere you look thrush: Swainson's. [cobirds] Yellow-throated Vireo at Lamar Community College
Birders, I got a call from Janeal Thompson this morning about the Worm-eating Warbler she had found at the south end of the Lamar Community College Woods (Prowers County). Although I failed to relocate the warbler, I did find a Yellow-throated Vireo, which was later seen by Janeal Thompson, Jane Stulp and Norma Verhoeff. This bird sang a few times, and was at the same spot as the Worm-eating Warbler. Go south on the main trail that starts at the green gate at the south end of the college, look for the first house, and continue south on the until you are due west of it. This will be about 100 feet south of a huge pile of cut logs. Also in this area was a hamburger male Summer Tanager, sporting the gaudy colors of oozing ketchup and mustard. [cobirds] Rufous Hummingbird/La Plata
Hey gang, My wife, Heather, texted me today to tell me she had a Rufous Hummingbird at the feeder at her office in Durango. After telling beginning birders time after time that Rufous Hummingbirds don't show up here until July, I was not sure what to expect. But sure enough, at about 6:30 PM the bird came in again. Definitely looked like a male Rufous Hummingbird. My only question is, with such an odd date, is Allen's Hummingbird a possibility? She has a photo of the bird if desired. [cobirds] Bonny and Flagler Birds on 5/9
I was out east today and the birding was terrific. The morning started at the west end of what used to be Bonny Reservoir. Just where the south side road turns from heading east to south, I found a Northern Waterthrush. It turned out to me my only eastern warbler of the day, but there were lots of other attractions. A couple hundred years from this spot where the road crosses what used to be billed as a high-water mark, I stopped for a pair of Baltimore Orioles and quickly had a Northern Cardinal as well. That got me out and walking around on both sides of the road. I discovered that I had happened on a mini-fallout with a strong wind from the north causing all northbound birds to dive into the first trees they found as they worked their way up the plains. Lots of Warbling Vireos and Clay-colored Sparrows were about as well as a Yellow-breasted Chat and a female Western Tanager plus other stuff including a welcomed Black-capped Chickadee where they have been scarce post-West Nile. A bit further on were a pair of Mississippi Kites. At the Hale crossroads there were gobs of birds including more Baltimore Orioles, several Orchard Orioles, Blue, Black-headed and Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, scores of Clay-colored and hundreds of Lark Sparrows. Hale Ponds was more of the same-my notes show 35 species in 50 minutes including my FOS Red-headed Woodpecker and Lazuli Bunting. By late afternoon I had made my way back to Flagler SWA where the female Hooded Warbler that I found yesterday was still in the same spot (NE corner grove). Below the Flagler dam was a Great Crested Flycatcher. Bill Kaempfer Boulder -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. [cobirds] Northern Parula --Wheat Ridge Greenbelt
This morning the Northern Parula continued east of the bridge at Prospect Park and north of Clear Creek. It was easy to locate as the bird sang non-stop in the cool morning air. It eventually flew to the south side of Clear Creek into private property. I was only able to find a large flock of Yellow-rumps and a couple of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers in a half hour. [cobirds] Green Heron, Plumbeous Vireo, Bl Chinned Hummer on nest in Canon City area today
I stopped for a few minutes on the Canon City Riverwalk on my way to an appt. Thre were a good number of Tree Swallows flying in the area, apparently a new group moving through. There were fair number of Yellow-rumped Warblers and a few Yellow Warblers working the trees. I spotted a first of the year Plumbeous Vireo high in a mature cottonwood by the river then noticed a hummer perched on a branch about 35 feet above the ground. Upon further inspection with my binocs I could see it was sitting on a nest that was very well camouflaged. I got photos of the hummer and a very pretty Yellow Warbler that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature bloghttp://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/. As I drove through Florence I found the dark ibis flock had increased to at least 350 birds today spread across one recently flooded ag field but I didn't have time to look for Glossy or hybrid birds. When I got back in town I stopped at Florence River Park where I spotted a Green Heron, likely the same one I have seen and reported on since last week. I have uploaded photos to my blog of the Eastern Phoebe I took a few days ago (I didn't look today as a thunderstorm was moving in).
