[cobirds] Blue Jay predating hummingbird nest in Canon City

2014-08-19 Thread SeEttaM .
Yesterday as I walked on the Canon City Riverwalk I heard 2 hummingbirds,
probably Black-chinned, making noises that sounded as though they were very
upset. I spotted them above a tree branch about 30 feet above the ground
and they appeared to be upset with an immature Blue Jay that I observed on
that branch. It occurred to me that there was a hummingbird nest there
that the omnivorous Blue Jay was predating. After the jay finished and
flew off, the hummers continued agitated both in movement and calls for
another couple of minutes. I walked around and was able to see that,
indeed,at that the spot where the Blue Jay had been there was a hummingbird
nest. Given the lateness of the summer, it would seem most likely that
there had been one or more nestlings there. Bummer.

[cobirds] Re: RFI: South Denver Broad-Tailed Hummingbird & Lark Bunting

2014-08-19 Thread Josh Adams
Hello all,
I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who offered me advice. I found
plenty of Lark Buntings out on East Yale Street, about thirty minutes east
of Cherry Creek. Several males, still more or less in their breeding
plumage were a unexpected bonus. Other good birds included several Common
Nighthawks perched on fence posts just feet from the road and an apparent
Cassin's Kingbird.

This morning I walked around a small park near my hotel and had a brief
look at a likely female Broad-Tailed Hummingbird. Early in the evening I
went to another location and got much better looks at several males.

After that I drove out near the airport to look for Burrowing Owls, which
is not a lifer, but is a bird I don't get to see nearly as much as I'd like
to. After much searching I located a single, distant bird along Quincy St.
I made a second pass and noticed an entire group had exited their burrow
and were perched in plain site.I made a third attempt and was amazed to
find several other groups including one of at least twenty individuals in
one small area. My total count on the third pass was 32 individual birds.
Quite a treat.

Thanks again for your hospitality,
Josh Adams

[cobirds] Flock of migrating Common Nighthawks feeding over Canon City

2014-08-19 Thread SeEttaM .
Over the week-end a flock of at least a dozen, likely more, Common
Nighthawks that were migrating through stopped over to feed with many
flying close over my home, flying around and around for about 45 minutes.
They were not very high so I got photos showing field marks and
identifiable by gender that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
. Two weeks ago a similarly large
(relative to what I see here anymore) migrating flock stopped over to feed
along the Arkansas River as it runs through Canon City.

[cobirds] Crow Valley migrants Aug 19 (Weld County)

2014-08-19 Thread David Dowell
I checked Crow Valley Campground (Weld County) and surroundings this
morning and found some expected but nice migrants: Cassin's Vireo, 3
American Redstarts, 4 Gray Catbirds, 2 Olive-sided Flycatchers, and 2
uncooperative empids. The Red-breasted Nuthatches reported previously by
Steve Mlodinow are still there, but I did not find the White-winged Dove.
The area near the "magic junipers" in the southwest part of the wildlife
area was best and was briefly hopping, but otherwise the birds were shy and
hard to find.
If you go "off trail" looking for birds, be prepared to deal with tall
grass and weeds.

Nearby Norma's Grove was a bit slow. The most interesting birds were a
male Lazuli Bunting, a Prairie Falcon, and several Sage Thrashers. The
acrobatics of Common Nighthawks provided good entertainment at both
locations.

[cobirds] Reynolds Park - Jefferson County

2014-08-19 Thread JBreitsch - Denver
I went out today with the express purpose of finding at least one bird to
photograph so I could get the horrible reptile off of the first page of my
Flickr site (I don't like snakes). I had no place in mind when I left my
house, and as has often been the case when that has happened this year, I
ended up at Reynolds Park. I guess I just like it there.

I hit several mixed flocks. The biggest one held my attention for almost
half an hour. Among the species it contained were the following:

All three Colorado nuthatch species
More than half a dozen Brown Creepers
More Townsend's Warblers than creepers
Ruby-crowned Kinglets,
Mountain Chickadees
Western Tanagers
Several thrush species
and adult and young Chipping Sparrows

Throw in the swifts overhead, the juncos, wrens, flycatchers, and vireos
(warbling), and it was a party. I flushed a Dusky Grouse that I didn't get
a picture of and then flushed another one that only made it as far as a
tree right along the hiking path. That one I did photograph. This was all
on the Eagle's View trail. On my way to the bottom, when I'd gotten myself
onto Raven's Roost Trail, I had a female Williamson's Sapsucker.

The temperature was 46 when I got out of my car and in the high 69 when I
got back in a couple of hours later. It was a good morning.

[cobirds] Bob Evans needs ride to convention

2014-08-19 Thread Maggie Boswell
Bob lives in AZ and asked me to post this for him.

I am planning to attend the CFO Convention and am looking for ride share
transportation from the Denver-Boulder area to Sterling and back.

I have not been a member of the listserv for sometime. I would prefer not to
subscribe, because I get more e-mails than I care to deal with already, but I
thought that a one time post with a request for a ride share might be the best
way to go.

I checked the CFO website thinking that there might be ride share information
there, but I did not find anything.

My contact information is as follows:

revans9...@aol.com

Telephone before August 23 520-212-4580
Telephone after August 23303-818-5256

[cobirds] Re: Cherry Creek SP birds?

2014-08-19 Thread Cheri Phillips
Hi Gary,

I found a couple of Brewer's Sparrows yesterday at the Lake Loop. From the
paved parking area there is a gravel path down to a picnic area. I found
them there. Common Yellowthroat I haven't seen in awhile but have seen them
at the pond near the airfield on the same side of the road.
