[cobirds] CANADA WARBLER, Canon City Riverwalk, FreCo

2014-08-30 Thread millerrichj via Colorado Birds
This morning I found a male Canada Warbler on the eastern section of the
Riverwalk. It was moving around in the vines and lower branches of the
large cottonwoods along the trail about 200 yds. west of the old MacKenzie Ave
parking area. (The old parking area is about a 1/4 mile walk from the
present parking area at MacKenzie Ave.)

Numerous Wilson Warblers and Western Tanagers were also seen along the
trail.

[cobirds] DFO Trip, Sept. 20, Boulder County

2014-08-30 Thread Paula Hansley
To anyone interested in this trip: In my DFO description of this trip, I
said it would be easy. That is because it will only be on parts of the
Fowler and north Spring Brook trails. We will be walking south from the
end of Boulder County Rd. 67 or no more than two miles -- about a mile up
to an irrigation ditch where these two trails meet the Goshawk Ridge Trail.
(If we did the whole Spring Brook loop and part of the Fowler Trail we
would walk almost 4 miles!)

This is a very birdy area as it includes many habitats (including open
ponderosa pine woodland, a burned area of pine forest, and lots of brushy
slopes-- plums and chokecherries galore this year). As of this week, two
Lewis Woodpeckers were still in the burn area!

[cobirds] Black Tern and Chimney Swifts (Jefferson), Red Crossbill (Arapahoe)

2014-08-30 Thread David Suddjian
On Aug 28 a lone Red Crossbill flew over St Mary Catholic Church along
Prince Street in Littleton (Arapahoe), heading north and calling all the
way. The calls were of the Type 2 Ponderosa pine form.

On Aug 29 I made my first visit to Hine Lake in Robert A. Easton Regional
Park, off the end of West Coal Mine near West Bowles (Jeffco). Low clouds
and a smattering of rain had brought a moderate number of swallows down low
over the lake. They were mostly Barn, but among them were two Chimney
Swifts, apparently a decent find for JeffCo based on few eBird entries.

Late today Aug 30 a Black Tern was at the JeffCo corner of the South Platte
Reservoir. It winged around right in the corner there for a time and then
went south across C470 toward Chatfield Res., where I technically was able
to add it to my Douglas Co list as it went south to the dam and then I lost
it from view. South Platte Reservoir was otherwise nearly bird free.

[cobirds] Kiowa, Prowers, Bent Highlights

2014-08-30 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All

Today I headed south to avoid winds.
Mark Peterson told me to look at a couple reservoirs in Kiowa, long dry, but no
so after recent deluges.
The first sizable pond has no name... mostly a flooded farm area, just south of
Eads. On west side of 287/385. I pulled over off the shoulder (this is best
done about sunrise). There was a fair number of shorebirds, 8 Solitaries and 2
Sanderlings being the most interesting. Far more unusual was a blue SNOW GOOSE
feeding on emergent grass amongst Killdeer and Baird's Sandpipers

Farther south is Jett Lake, or what I think is called Jett Lake. It is easily
visible from the freeway, which is where I first looked at it from. Then I
drove a bit south to the next road, went west just past a fence, and then
followed a two-track north to the edge of the reservoir. It had goodly numbers
of shorebirds, the best being 3 BUFF-BREASTED SANDPIPERS in the sw. corner (not
found a couple hours later) and a Pectoral Sand.

Neegronda, Neenoshe, and Ne No Spah (sorry, to lazy to look it up) were not
very interesting. The latter will likely be very sweet as water levels drop

At Lamar Community College Woods there was, per usual a N Cardinal... and not
unexpected, but not usual for me there... a RB Woodpecker. Of more note was a
PHILADELPHIA VIREO... a bright bird, entirely yellow beneath. Also present was
RE Vireo and Cassin's Vireo. There is a funky Myiarchus flycatcher there.
Probably a bright Ash-throated.

At Tempel Grove there was another Red-eyed Vireo, and Ovenbird, 2 American
Redstarts, and a MacGillivray's Warbler.

An the Neenoshe Locust Grove, there was an ALDER FLYCATCHER, which flew off
into the cottonwoods and tamarisk bowl that once was mostly under water. Also
there was an Indigo Bunting and just a nice assortment of stuff, especially for
Kiowa County, such as Cassin's Vireo and 7 Lazuli Buntings.
