[cobirds] Response to Scott Severs and more information about setting up a Colorado eBird portal for FREE.

2014-10-08 Thread Joe Roller
Scott and Cobirds,
Here is an informed response I received from Ken Ostermiller, volunteer
eBird hotspot reviewer for Ohio. I am totally ignorant of the pros and cons
of portals, so I asked Ken what value they might hold.
Ken is an experienced and savvy eBirder and has some information about very
recent (October 7) news about eBird setting up a Colorado portal at a cost
of:
FREE.
Ken is very generous with time devoted to helping birders with things like
this. I am not sure who would take the time to set up a portal,
which seems to be a huge task.
I am a huge fan of CObirds and the CFO County Listing website and feel that
those excellent resources meet the needs of Colorado birders and visitors.
But Scott describes how a state portal can do other tasks, so this is just
FYI.

from Ken Ostermiller:

Others heard about what I had done in Ohio and I have helped set up similar
sites in Missouri, South Dakota, and New Hampshire.

Unfortunately, the wiki service we have been using, Wikispaces, has
recently discontinued offering free wikis for non-educational use. They
will be shutting down the free wikis on November 15. *That prompted me to
discuss with Chris Wood whether we could get Cornell to set up a free wiki
based on their higher education connection. Just today they got one set up*
and I am in the process of moving three states there -- Missouri, Ohio, and
South Dakota. There is room for more states in the wiki, so if someone in
Colorado wants to set up a section on Colorado, we could do that.

Here's a link to the new wiki -- most of the links in the state areas are
not yet active. I'm working on Barry County in Missouri next.
http://ebirdhotspots.wikispaces.com/

The Ohio web site is getting used by Ohio birders. I'm getting 300-400
unique visitors each day on the site. It is good for tourism as well as
birders.

Another birder has set up a wiki in New York. It is organized quite
differently.

Probably more than you wanted to know!

[cobirds] Re: Response to Scott Severs and more information about setting up a Colorado eBird portal for FREE.

2014-10-08 Thread The "Nunn Guy"
FYI-no they are not free--from Wisconsin eBird administrator " ... the fee
is around $1000-1500 per year, which is covered by Wisconsin Society for
Ornithology and individual interested donors. The fee itself is perhaps a
bit steep but as Marshall notes it's basically partially a contribution to
support eBird.

[cobirds] Request: Please report American White Pelicans with wing tags

2014-10-08 Thread Jason Beason
*I have been asked to pass along this request from researchers to the
north:*

*We are getting a bit late in the season for pelicans, but we are
still **seeing
young of the year pelicans in the wetlands surrounding Great Salt Lake.
When you see pelicans keep an eye out for green wing tags on these birds.
This year on Gunnison Island in Great Salt Lake 540 juvenile American white
pelicans were banded and wing tagged on both wings.*

*Reporting your sightings to reportband.gov

will
help us track pelican movements both locally and regionally. At the end of
last month we had one of the pelicans banded this year turn up west of Fort
Collins, Colorado. *

*The tags are green with white writing and have a three character,
alphanumeric code in large type. Above the code is the word "UTAH" in
small letters. You may also see red or black wing tags on the right wing
only. These pelicans were banded in Idaho at Minidoka NWR and Blackfoot
Reservoir, respectively.*

[cobirds] Another Cassin's Finch on the plains 10/8 in Pueblo

2014-10-08 Thread Brandon

I saw and heard a male Cassin's Finch at Pueblo City Park in Pueblo this
morning. This is my second one recently, the other one was at Hasty
Campground, Bent County on 10/5 (which wasn't accepted by some e-bird reviewer
it appears). This species has been seen recently in eastern New Mexico and
other eastern Colorado locations too.

Pygmy Nuthatches were all over Pueblo City Park this morning too, probably at
least 20 of them. Mountain Chickadees, Brown Creepers, and Red-breasted
Nuthatches were all over the Park this morning too.

On 10/7, two Evening Grosbeaks flew over calling in Rock Canyon, below Pueblo
Reservoir dam.

The mountain species are really roaming around it seems.

[cobirds] COBIRDS request --fALL COUNTIES

2014-10-08 Thread 'Allison Hilf' via Colorado Birds
Given I only compile the RBA infrequently, it might not be appropriate for me
to post this. BUT, it used to be the case that rare birds were posted on
COBIRDS. Ebird has changed this and many birders post rare birds exclusively
to eBird. PLEASE post RBA's to COBIRDS (as well as to eBird if you are an
eBirder). There are still many birders who choose not to eBird, including
birders traveling to Colorado. Also, it is now necessary to check eBird for
the RBA. This might not appear to be a burden to compilers -- but it can be
(particularly when only GPS locations are documented on eBird, and when the
compilers try to describe general locations where the bird(s) have been
reported.

Thanks,
Allison Hilf

[cobirds] upcoming bird walk, Equalizer Lake (Larimer Co.)

2014-10-08 Thread Scott Baron
Hi,

Join the High Plains Environmental Center for a morning of birding
around Equalizer
Lake in Loveland this Saturday Oct. 11. We will walk approx. 2 miles on
sidewalks and on level walking paths. The reservoir has been drawn down
quite a bit and now there is an extensive mudflat at the south end, which
usually attracts many birds.

Meet at the parking lot at HPEC, which is located at 1854 Piney River Drive
in the Centerra neighborhood in Loveland. We will walk to the lake at
8am. This area is easily reached from Rte. 34 exit of I-25. The walk
should end around 10:30.

Recent visits on Sep. 30, Oct. 3 and Oct. 7 have found a nice variety of
species such as Great Egret, Lesser Black-backed Gull (9/30 and 10/3), Bald
Eagle, Least Sandpiper and Lesser Goldfinch. We had a Great Horned Owl and
a lot of songbird migrants on the last birdwalk on Sep. 20.

Come out and join us for fall migration.

Scott Baron
