[cobirds] Barr Lake - Adams Co

2014-10-25 Thread Ira Sanders
Birders,
Today at Barr Lake where the water is WAY down as they are working on the
dam:
Canada Goose
Cackling Goose
White Pelican
Killdeer
Pectoral Sandpiper
Least Sandpiper
LB Dowitcher
Lesser Yellowlegs
Prairie Falcon
Dark Morph Rough-legged Hawk - likely the same one back for a 4th or 5th
year
Coot
American Pipit
Horned Lark
Gadwall
Mallard
Pintail
Shoveler
Bufflehead
Goldeneye
GW Teal
Ruddy
Western Grebe
Eared Grebe
DC Corm
Gr Blue Heron
Herring, Ring-billed and Calif Gulls

By the looks of the water level, I doubt there will be many geese and
probably very few eagles this winter. At this level, I wouldn't be
surprised if the whole lake (what's left of it) freezes.

[cobirds] Lakes of Longmont (Boulder/Weld) 10/25

2014-10-25 Thread Mark Miller
Hi Everyone-

Marcia Marvin and I did a loop around some of the lakes of Longmont ,
including Union Reservoir, Terry Lake, and McIntosh Lake, this afternoon
10/25. Best birds were 4 Bonaparte's Gulls at Terry Lake (good viewpoint for
afternoon light is off 95th just south of Woodland Rd). There were lots of
Western Grebes everywhere with a few Clark's mixed in, and Redhead numbers
are ramping up from a week ago.

[cobirds] eastern Boulder Co., Oct. 25

2014-10-25 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.

With Brian Small, I poked around Walden Ponds, Boulder County, early this
sunny Saturday morning, Oct. 25. Not a whole lot there, but it was nice to
find 6 Wood Ducks, a late Swainson's Hawk, a Greater Yellowlegs and a
Wilson's Snipe, 2 or 3 Marsh Wrens, Audubon's and Myrtle warblers, and at
least 8 American Tree Sparrows. Here's audio of the Marsh Wrens:

song-- http://www.xeno-canto.org/199954
call-- http://www.xeno-canto.org/199955

Over at Greenlee Preserve, I found my first-ever Evening Grosbeak at the
site, a bird flying over.

[cobirds] a few birds from Arapahoe and Jefferson Counties

2014-10-25 Thread David Suddjian
Today (10/25) a *Steller's Jay* was away from the mountains at Lee Gulch
near Prince Street in Littleton, with a flock of 27 *Bushtits* nearby at
St. Mary Church (ARA).

A tardy adult *Swainson's Hawk* was at Sledding Hill Park at Kipling x Ken
Caryl (JEF). It was perched in the exact tree favored by a breeding pair
from this past season, but I haven't seen any others in that area for
several weeks.

Yesterday 2 *Red Crossbills* (Type 2) passed over my home at Ken Caryl
Valley (JEF).

[cobirds] Yuma county --- Golden-crowned Sparrow, 10/25/14

2014-10-25 Thread 'Mark Peterson' via Colorado Birds
COBirders,

Today, Lisa Edwards and I had planned to do a fair bit of birding in multiple
eastern Colorado areas but ended up only making it to the Bonny and Hale areas
of Yuma county. We started at Foster's Grove where the highlights were a GRAY
CATBIRD, three WHITE-THROATED SPARROWs and a flyover CASSIN'S FINCH.

Next stop was Wagon Wheel campground which had birds but mostly expected
things, not totally unexpected yet nice was a GOLDEN-CROWNED KINGLET and a
probable hybrid Eastern X Spotted Towhee.

Onto Pipit Hill where we recorded all of SEVEN individual birds which
included two HORNED LARKs, one CHESTNUT-COLLARED LONGSPUR and at least four
SPRAGUE'S PIPITs. To get to Pipit Hill take the road just on the north side of
the Republican river off of LL.5 and head west. The road eventually bends back
to the south. You do not want to go to the south but you can park near where
it turns to the south and then walk up hill to the north. There is a windmill
in this area. Really anywhere on that hillside is reasonable.

Back down the road to the Hale area near the intersection of CR4 and LL.5 we
had a LINCOLN'S SPARROW and a RED FOX SPARROW (mixed in with Junco's) for our
highlights.

Then off to Hale Ponds where shortly after getting out of the car we found a
juvenile GOLDEN-CROWNED SPARROW (which completed the Zonotrichia slam for us,
kind of) that was associating with a small flock of WHITE-CROWNED SPARROWs.
They disappeared on us quickly so we decided to wander off into Kansas to poke
around bit and give them time to maybe return. When we returned we worked the
area for quite a while going through a lot of White-crowns but never re-found
the Golden-crowned. I suspect it is still there but there is a lot of area to
cover and we finally decided to give up. Ah, a mentioned that we kind of
completed the Zonotrichia slam above. We did but across state lines. Our only
HARRIS'S SPARROW of the day was in Kansas and the Golden-crowned was only about
300 yards from being in Kansas.

Beautiful weather out there and great company. Ah, and a word of caution if
you decide to head out there, we saw roughly 20 cars that were out there for
hunting, so you might consider wearing your blaze orange if you have any.
