[cobirds] Female Magnificent Hummingbird, Boulder County, 11/3 - No Visitors Please

2014-11-03 Thread Adam Jack
COBirders,

The bird has been here a week as of this morning. She is at the feeder.

Despite a dusting of snow (and snow thunder this morning) the temperatures
are only in the low 30s (34 low last night, 35 now, compared to a 30 she
weathered a week back.) That said, the temperature is not likely to improve
like previous days, and the insects will be in short supply.

I'd like to have *no visitors* to the deck today please. I know her chances
of survival are low (since she's not head south yet) but I'd rather she be
free to feed on a cold day like this. (Viewing from the road is fine, but
that is not particularly close.)

Joe Roller suggested I start a log book for visitors. Since I didn't have
one a week ago when people first arrived I've set up a Google form as a
virtual log book. I'd appreciate a few minutes of your time to gather what
I can on the bird and birders:

Visitor Log:

[cobirds] Re: sandhill cranes, Monte Vista

2014-11-03 Thread Regina King
We were in Alamosa Oct 27-28, and yes, there were many cranes, in groups of
anywhere from several up to 50+, scattered through the fields and sky at
the Monte Vista NWR, and to the northeast of town. We also visited San
Luis refuge, where we saw none. Visited with the ranger who told us that
they have been trickling into the area in small groups. I'm guessing
overall we saw several thousand.

[cobirds] Eastern Phoebe, Ft. Collins (Larimer Co.)

2014-11-03 Thread Scott Baron
Hi,

I wish I had more time to go birding today but while walking across campus
a little before 2pm I heard a familiar chip call. I had my binocs with
me and after a search of a minute I saw an Eastern Phoebe perched in some
sort of legume tree with yellow compound leaves. Brown above, whitish
below, no eye ring, tail wagging, no wing bars, dark bill. I had to leave
for class so I couldn't linger.

The location is the behind the sw. corner of the Shepardson building on the
east side of campus.

[cobirds] Juncos, Boulder Co.; Nov. 1

2014-11-03 Thread Scott Baron
Hi,

Late report. After viewing the Magnificent Hummingbird in Boulder Co. on
Saturday I swung by Eldorado Mtn. Open Space's Dowdy Draw area. There were
a lot of birds at the end of the unsigned dead end road at the Fowler
trailhead. Further up, I had a nice mixed flock of Juncos with all 5
subspecies including 2 White-winged. It is fun to see Juncos in Colorado,
with so many subspecies possible. This location was the Spring Brook Loop
North Trail a little before the intersection with the Goshawk Ridge Trail,
just before the bridge and along the concrete chute. It is the same
location where the Grace's Warbler was seen back in June.

Happy birding,

Scott Baron

[cobirds] Recent birds Jefferson, Douglas, Arapahoe

2014-11-03 Thread David Suddjian
This morning (11/3) I was hoping for nice numbers of waterbirds at
Chatfield, but they were down considerably from one week ago. Nonetheless,
a *Red-throated Loon* was near the shoreline between Deer Creek inlet and
Massey Draw parking area, with a *Common Loon *nearby (JeffCo). Two
more *Common
Loons* were near the dam, as viewed from the Marina sandspit. My first *Common
Goldeneye* of the season was off the marina, and a *Merlin* flew by the
sandspit (Douglas). The view from the original hernonry overlook at the
best waterbird variety, but nothing unusual that I saw. Of interest was a
vocalizing *Horned Grebe*, pestered to protest by an aggressive Pied-billed
Grebe. I don't think I've ever heard a Horned Grebe calling before. When I
first heard it the call reminded me of a churring Red-bellied Woodpecker.

On Oct 31 a tardy *Townsend's Warbler* was at St. Mary Church at South
Prince St in Littleton (Arapahoe).

On Oct 30 a female *Surf Scoter*, 1 *Common Loon* and 1 *Clark's Grebe*
were at Cooley Lake in South Platte Park (Arapahoe).

[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, El Paso County

CO Birders,

White-throated Sparrow frequented feeder yesterday (neighborhood just south of
Bear Creek Pk in Colo Spgs). It's the 3rd in 12 yrs at this location (one spent
the whole winter 4 years ago).

Given sparrow ratios along Front Range, I'm poised to add Harris's Sparrow in
next few years to yard list. We'll see!

[cobirds] Kiowa County Reservoirs and John Martin Res (Bent County) today

2014-11-03 Thread 'Steven Mlodinow' via Colorado Birds
Greetings All

A quick summary before bed
Nee So Pah Reservoir had a Thayer's and a Mew Gull today, both juvs (well,
actually, Mew transitioning from juv to first winter) + a tardy BW Teal

Neegronda and Neenoshe were dead
Jett Reservoir had a moderate amount of ducks, but nothing of true note

John Martin had 5000+ plus ducks of the usual sorts and

10 shorebirds highlighted by a Red Phalarope nearly eaten by a Prairie Falcon
(and then decided to depart)
a late Wilson's Phalarope
4 Lesser and 20 Greater yellowlegs
200 Least Sands
100 LB Dows
1 Dunlin
100 Am Avocet
2 Pecs
and 7 or so Killdeer

Also, apparently unprecedented for November was a raft of 885 Franklin's Gulls

2 Common Loons were on the water, but no RN Grebe or rarer loons

A Vesper Sparrow - a tad late - was along one of the many roads

Add onto to that nearly 1000 Western Grebes and it was quite a party out there.
I wish that I knew what I looked over for I most certainly missed some stuff
there

Cheers
