[cobirds] Female Magnificent Hummingbird, Boulder County, 11/4
CoBirders, This Mag survived the night despite freezing fog/frosted trees and a low temperature of 26.5F. Today looks like a glorious day, so hopefully temperatures will rise and the frost will melt. I've come to respect her as a very tough bird (e.g. overnighting for more than 12 hours in cold/fog/frost.) This morning she looks/acts healthy and not phased by the last 24 hours. (I did replace her slushy/frozen 3:1 solution before light this morning so she had a warming food supply. She came at the normal time, around 6:15.) I've read that Mags may be more insectivorous than other North American Hummingbirds, needing nectar less than other species, and that both matches my observations and might be good for her if she moves south. If her flying food supply also made it through the night then I hope she is in for a good day. That said, if visitors are planning to come observe the bird today, please contact me with when and we can work out how to impact her the least. If you visited and have not, and would not mind filling out this visitor log, I'd appreciate it: goo.gl/F7yA4M regards, Adam -- Adam R. B. [cobirds] Pacific loons - Baseline Res, Boulder County
Birders, Pacific loons seem to be making their way along the front range as I got some good views of a pair out at Baseline Reservoir in Boulder County. When I left around 12:30 they were feeding in the Northeast corner. [cobirds] Barr Lake today (Adams County)
My fall has been busy and I have not had much time to bird here in CO, so loved being outside on such a glorious fall day today. Nothing REALLY spectacular, except for some impressive numbers for November. Over 500 American White Pelicans are still staging at Barr. An estimated 1200 Double Crested Cormorants were lined up on the far shoreline in the early afternoon (didn't see any in the AM)! I guess with the water level so low the fish must be concentrated in available water. In the mud flat that used to be the lake behind the visitors center was a large group of shore birds... which turned out to be almost exclusively Killdeer! Over 400 of them including a further out flock on the wing of 100+! And pretending to be shore birds both on the mud flats and various other areas on the lake I tallied over 700 Green-winged Teal. A few late migrants included one Least and one Semipalmated Sandpiper (plus a couple of Pecs) on the mud flats. A late Orange Crowned Warbler was on the back side of the dam. I didn't fully pick over the gull flocks, which were mostly very distant, but did find two Lesser Black-backed (one adult, one first cycle), one Thayer's Gull (First Cycle) and an assortment of the other expected species early in the AM when most were loafing. I also found a dapper juvenile Harris's Sparrow on the back side of the dam (FOS for me). [cobirds] Ken Caryl Ranch (JeffCo) and South Platte Park (Arapahoe)
This morning (11/4) I enjoyed rambling and roaming in my home area of Ken Caryl Ranch (Jefferson). Best find was an adult *Golden-crowned Sparrow* near Dutch Creek at the Dakota Hogback. The same area had a *Harris's Sparrow*. A short way south of there between the Dakota and Lyons hogbacks I noted *Merlin* and tardy *Rock Wren* and *Vesper Sparrow*. Further upstream along Dutch Creek there was a straggling *Lincoln's Sparrow*. The upper watershed area of Massey Draw had Type 4 *Red Crossbills*, a lower than usual *Clark's Nutcracker*, and a *Cassin's Finch*. At least 2 *Ferruginous Hawks* passed south over Ken Caryl Valley early this morning. Lots of *Am. Tree Sparrows* were around today, and I heard flight calls from migrants before dawn. Rattlesnake Gulch at Deer Creek Canyon Open Space (JeffCo) had a late *Gray Catbird*. At South Platte Park (Arapahoe) there was a *Common Loon* and a late *Spotted Sandpiper* at Eaglewatch Lake. Nearby South Platte Reservoir also had a *Common Loon*. Indeed, the loon was the only waterbird in evidence on that body of water. [cobirds] Yellow-bellied and 3 Williamson's Sapsuckers in Canon City, 3 Common Loons latish Osprey at Trinidad Lake
On my way back from an extended trip to New Mexico Sunday I stopped at Trinidad Lake where I saw a latish Osprey, several good sized flocks (75 or so birds each) of Pine Siskins and 4 Common Loons actively diving for food. I got several good photos of these loons in autumn transitional plumage (thus Autumn Loons) with more photos of them on my Birds and Nature blog http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/. I birded around Canon City today and found a male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker in a private yard and 3 Williamson's Sapsuckers. I have a single photo of the Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and a couple of one of the Williamson's on my blog. More later. (If you scroll down my blog there are a number of photos from New Mexico including a rare sighting of a Harris's Hawk at Bosque del Apache NWR and a rare white crane identified by NWR as leucistic) SeEtta Moss Canon City http://BirdsAndNature.blogspot.com http://birdsandnature.blogspot.com/2014/11/autumn-loons-well-common-loons-in-their.html -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group.
