[cobirds] White-throated Sparrow, Boulder 12/14
While participating in the Boulder CBC yesterday, I found a White-throated Sparrow at the NE corner of 4th and Dellwood. The bird then flew to the backyard of the house on the SW corner of 5th and Dellwood. The N. Cardinal, along with 5 Cassin's finches, made a couple of visits to my feeders this morning. We couldn't find it yesterday for the count unfortunately. [cobirds] Possible Major Changes in Taxonomic Order
There is a possible change to the taxonomic order of birds that would turn your field guide inside out and upside down. The American Association for the Advancement of Science has announced an extensive DNA study. I have included a link to the article. [cobirds] Eastern Towhee - Boulder Co
Hi cobirders, I've received a reputable report of a male Eastern Towhee, seen yesterday in the Marshall Mesa area by a visiting birder who is well-experienced with the species. He didn't get photos. The bird's location was described as being just to the north of the Community Ditch trail, near a large rock outcrop and in the vicinity of an old fruit (apple?) tree. There was at least one male spotted towhee in the general area as well, which provided comparison. Parking for the Marshall Mesa area is south of Hwy 170 just a little bit east of Hwy 93 in far southern Boulder County. See https://bouldercolorado.gov/osmp/marshall-mesa-trailhead. It gets a lot of bike/runner/dog activity so very early mornings might be most conducive to finding active birds along the trails. (Off-trail access on parts of Marshall Mesa requires a Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Habitat Conservation Area permit.) [cobirds] Recent birds - Jefferson, Douglas, Arapahoe
Dec 12 Cooley Lake (Arapahoe) had an adult *Glaucous Gull* and 1st cycle *Thayer's* with a gull flock loafing on ice which has since melted. Dec 14 During the snowy afternoon my Ken Caryl Valley feeding stations attracted a nice 3 *Harris's Sparrows*, and unexpected *Lincoln's Sparrow*, and *Cassin's Finches*. Dec 15 In addition to the *Yellow-billed Loon* (seen in both Jefferson and Douglas), other birds of interest that I noted at Chatfield Reservoir this morning included 2 *Common Loons*, 1 *Red-necked Grebe*, 1 male *Barrow's Goldeneye*, 1 adult *Thayer's Gull*, 1 *Lesser-black-backed Gull* (both these were on the ice in the upper end of the Platte arm of the lake, not at the marina), 1 *Peregrine Falcon*, 1 *Prairie Falcon*, and 1 *Northern Shrike*. I explored in the upper region of the Plum Creek Nature Area up toward Titan Road (Douglas) and found a *Winter Wren* in a flotsom thicket along the creek. A *Merlin *was also noted in this area My Ken Caryl Valley yard had 2 continuing *Harris's Sparrows*, 2 *Evening Grosbeaks* flew over, and later 2 *Red Crossbills* (Type 2). [cobirds] Yellow-billed Loon - Chatfield (Douglas/Jefferson)
All - Many thanks to all who posted today about the Yellow-billed Loon. My current work-schedule allowed my only a brief timeframe in which to go see the bird and I appreciated the information flowing to cobirds as to the best location to see the bird. I initially found the bird halfway between the Handicapped Fisherman's Platform and the dam tower, but the bird was actively diving and moving about long distances when underwater. Eventually the bird ended up very close to the platform along with one of the Common Loons present allowing for outstanding comparisons and photographs. Great bird! [cobirds] American dipper in Adams County today
HI CoBirders An american Dipper continues in Clear Creek east of Lowell Blvd. in Adams County. Today it was at the I-76 bridges at 4:39 pm. This seems to be the favored spot this year.
