[cobirds] Belmar Park & Ken Caryl Valley, Jefferson 4/13

2015-04-13 Thread David Suddjian
I visited Belmar Park specifcally to look at a hybrid goose that was
recently photo'd at the lake there, and in consideration of some recent
reports of Greater White-fronted. I did see the hybrid goose, which is
apparently a *Canada x Graylag* (domestic), which bears some semblance to a
Greater White-fronted due to some uneven white around the base of the bill
and brown coloration. Thanks to Steve M. for helping to clarify the
parentage. I did not see any other geese besides Canadas.

Some other birds in the park of interest to me were two
alternate-plumage *American
Avocets* (wading near the island), 1 *Wilson's Snipe*, migrant swallows
including 1 *Barn* and 2 *Nor. Rough-winged* together with some Trees, my
first *House Wren* of the season, and a male *Great-tailed Grackle*.

Back home at Ken Caryl Valley I watched "my" *Bushtit *pair gathering
threads of bark, confirming their intent to nest. A female *Cassin's Finch*
visited the feeder; they have been mostly absent for a month now, but
occasionally appear even on nice days. A *Chipping Sparrow* at the feeding
station was my 1st this year.

[cobirds] Larimer/Fort Collins

2015-04-13 Thread Rob Sparks
This crisp morning I rode my bike to McMurry Natural Area and saw 3 female
Red-breasted Mergansers, one male Brown-headed Cowbird and a Killdeer as
well as the usual morning chorus of Song Sparrows, Red-winged Blackbirds,
Western Meadowlarks etc..

A few days ago on a nice morning while doing a bird activity with toddlers
we spotted some migrating raptors, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk and 2 Cooper's Hawk
and about 50 local Turkey Vultures.

[cobirds] Cliff Swallows and Osprey in Longmont

2015-04-13 Thread Kat Bradley-Bennett
Two Cliff Swallows arrived yesterday (FOS) at the bridge where they've been
nesting for the past decade or more, just south of Blue Mountain Elementary
School in west Longmont (Boulder County). This is pretty typical. Usually,
a couple of scouts arrive a week or so before the rest of the males show
up. The females arrive within another week of that. Bye-bye, mosquitoes!

A gorgeous unbanded male Osprey arrived at the nesting platform on N 75th,
south of Nelson Road sometime last week while I was down in Texas looking
for warblers. No sign of a female yet.

Report submitted by Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (jeff.bi...@rmbo.org)
Dinosaur Ridge information may be found at:
http://www.rmbo.org/

Site Description:
Dinosaur Ridge is the only regularly staffed hawkwatch in Colorado and is
the best place in the world to see migrating Ferruginous Hawks. Dinosaur
Ridge may be the best place in the country to see the rare dark morph of
the Broad-winged Hawk (a few are seen each spring). Hawkwatchers who linger
long enough may see resident Golden Eagles, Red-tailed Hawks and Prairie
Falcons, in addition to migrating Swainson's, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned
Hawks, American Kestrels and Turkey Vultures. Peregrine Falcons and
Ferruginous Hawks are uncommon; Northern Goshawk is rare but regular.
Non-raptor species include Rock Wren, and sometimes Bushtit, Western
Bluebird, Sandhill Crane, White-throated Swift, American White Pelican or
Dusky Grouse. Birders are always welcome.
The hawkwatch is generally staffed by volunteers from the Rocky Mountain
Bird Observatory from about 9 AM to around 4 PM from the first week of
March to the first week of May.

Directions to site:
>From exit 259 on I-70 towards Morrison, drive south under freeway and take
left into first parking lot, the Stegosaurus lot. Follow small signs from
the south side of lot to hawkwatch site. The hike starts heading east on an
old two-track and quickly turns south onto a trail on the west side of the
ridge. When the trail nears the top of the ridge, turn left, head through
the gate, and walk to the clearly-visible, flat area at the crest of the
ridge.
