[cobirds] El Paso county --- Snowy Plover

2015-04-28 Thread 'Mark Peterson' via Colorado Birds
COBirders,
Maybe of more local interest, late this evening there was a single SNOWY PLOVER
along the north (northeast) shoreline of Big Johnson Reservoir.  Basically the
same area that the WHIMBREL was/is.

Unfortunately, the Caspian Tern was not there and nor was it there around 1
this afternoon which was soon after it was originally found.  I suspect it came
in and left relatively quickly.  I am not sure of the timing but there was a
Caspian Tern seen at Prospect Lake today as well, maybe the bird went to Big
Johnson and then to Prospect?  Other birds at Big Johnson this evening of
interest:
Greater Scaup (male that has been around for a while)Snowy Egret
White-faced IbisLong-billed CurlewMarbled Godwit
Greater Yellowlegs
WilletLesser YellowlegsLeast Sandpiper
Long-billed DowitcherWilson's PhalaropeForster's Tern
Overall numbers of birds has definitely gone down but still a lot of birds to
look at.

[cobirds] Wilson'sPhalarope,Greater & Lesser Yellowlegs, White-facedIbis,Franklin'sGulls & Peregrine Falcon in Canon City area

2015-04-28 Thread SeEttaM .
The flooded agricultural fields in the Canon City and Florence areas
continue to bring in migrating shorebirds and waterbirds. Today there were
4 Greater and 1 Lesser Yellowlegs and several White-faced Ibis east
Florence. Yesterday 2 Wilson's Phalarope swam in a flooded field there.
While the numbers of Franklin's Gulls has decreased at least 25 or so
remain and may be found in flooded fields in Canon City or on our Valco
Ponds (seems it does not matter that this is private property as I have
seen 3 more birders trespassing to look at birds there). Yesterday a
Peregrine Falcon stopped by our Valco Ponds to look for prey but left
circling the ponds without going after anything. Photos of these species
are up on my Birds and Nature blog
along with a brief discussion of their flooded habitats in this area..

The Eastern Phoebe sitting on eggs is still sitting tight, she picked a
very protected area that provided shelter from the copious rain showers we
had the past two days.

[cobirds] RMBO Chatfield Banding Station Update, 4/28/15

2015-04-28 Thread meredith
Finally got back to banding, after 2 days of rain! Another typical early
spring day:

House Wren 5
Spotted Towhee 1
Lincoln's Sparrow 4
Brown-headed Cowbird 2
American Goldfinch 2 (a M and F; caught side-by-side in the net. After we
released him, he waited for her in a nearby tree)

We will be open daily, weather permitting, through May 31, EXCEPT for
May 8-9. We will be opening nets at 6:30, and should have the first birds
back
at the station by 7:30. We will close by noon most days; earlier if it is
too hot. On most days, you will see more birds if you come early, and will
be more likely to avoid crowds. On weekdays, we have school groups visiting
every day, and they usually arrive at the station sometime between
9:30 and 10 a.m.

[cobirds] Black-throated Gray Warbler---Red Rocks/Jeffco

2015-04-28 Thread markchavez
This morning after an uneventful Main Reservoir, Belmar, and Welchester Tree
Park, I headed to Red Rocks. Highlights include a male Black-throated Gray
Warbler, 4 Blue-gray Gnatcatchers(FOS), 2 Lazuli Buntings(FOS), Hermit Thrush,
5 Broad-tailed Hummingbirds(there back!) and Orange-crowned Warblers. Most of
the action was near the bottom of the trail that crosses the road. Photos of
the Black-throated Gray can be seen below:

[cobirds] Big J Reservoir , Whimbrel and Caspian Tern

2015-04-28 Thread 'John D' via Colorado Birds
CO Birders :

Bill Maynard found a Whimbrel with a Long-billed Curlew for comparison
at Big Johnson this morning and I added a Caspian Tern on walking out to view .
These birds are in the north east corner and requires a lengthy walk from the
parking lot . Heat haze will make it very difficult to see from the parking
even with a high quality scope .

2015-04-28 Thread tocalytic
Hello,

Searching through lots of Yellow-rumped Warblers and a few Orange-crowned
Warblers today turned up a male Black-throated Gray Warbler on the west
side of Prospect Lake in Wheatridge.
Other birds of note included several Brewer's Sparrows, a few Greater Scaup
on the lake and a Gray Catbird.

Cheers,

[cobirds] VAUX'S SWIFT -- Pueblo County 4/28

2015-04-28 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds

This morning around 7:17am I photographed a swift along the Arkansas River,
below Pueblo Reservoir dam, west of the Cottonwood Picnic Area on the south
side of the River.  The bird was flying with swallows (mostly Violet-greens).
I felt like the bird wasn't a Chimney Swift while watching it.  I was able to
get four photos.  Chris Wood from Cornell (e-bird) has looked at the photos,
and is good with this bird being a VAUX'S SWIFT (which would be Colorado's 1st
State Record)!  Photos can be seen on my flickr site.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/brandonsbirdphotos/ I have no clue, if the bird
is still around, the swallows were getting higher up.  Maybe it is worth
looking early tomorrow morning, though I don't know if it is worth coming to
try to find it or not.  No other birders were around, when I was seeing it for
a few minutes, before it disappeared.

[cobirds] Problematic birds at Greenlee Preserve, Boulder County, Apr. 27

2015-04-28 Thread Ted Floyd
Hello, Birders.

Lots going on in the rain yesterday morning, Mon., Apr. 27, at Greenlee
Preserve, Boulder County. Here are some highlights:

1. A singing *African collared-dove* (video:
http://tinyurl.com/AfCD-2015-04-27). It was a "wild type" individual, about
the same color and build overall as a Eurasian collared-dove, but singing
its distinctive song. Listen also for the African collared-dove's unique
flight call (not captured in this audio), a descending whinny, entirely
unlike the Eurasian collared-dove's monosyllabic whooshing-and-roaring
sound.

2. A small *"white-cheeked goose"* whose ID I am not clear on (photos:
http://tinyurl.com/goose-2015-04-27). I had initially called it a
"Richardson" cackling goose; then several great birders called it a
"lesser" Canada goose; now some other great birders are calling it a
cackling goose again. Anybody have any thoughts on this bird? I have no dog
in this fight; just interested in learning more about the tricky
"white-cheeked geese" of Colorado. The bird has been there for at least a
month, and it shows no signs of going anywhere. (Although it might want to
keep an eye on the coyotes...)

3. An adult *peregrine falcon,* probably a male (photos:
http://tinyurl.com/PeFa-2015-04-27). Surely, this one is straightforward,
yes? Not so fast. A falcon researcher reminded me the other day that
"pseudogrine" genes are pervasive in the modern peregrine genome. The
"successful" reintroduction programs of the late 20th century involved a
lot of mixing and matching of different populations of peregrines, with the
result that we have engineered a different "species" than the one that
existed in the 20th century.

4. An *orange-crowned warbler* singing a notably complex song (audio:
http://tinyurl.com/OCWa-2015-04-27). Roger Tory Peterson famously
disparaged the orange-crown's song as "a colorless trill." I dunno, this
one sounds more like a house wren to me! By the way, does anybody know what
to call these uniformly bright orange-crowns we see in spring? They're so
bright compared to the presumed *celata* orange-crowns I saw last week in
Missouri; but they're not blaze-yellow like *lutescens* to our west; and
they're so uniformly patterned and colored compared to my impression of
*orestera*.

Other birds yesterday morning at the Greenlee/Waneka complex: beautiful
ducks (*wood duck*, *cinnamon teal*, etc.) on Greenlee Reservoir;
black-and-white ducks and duck-like birds (*western grebe*, *double-crested
cormorant*, *lesser scaup*) on Waneka Lake; a *snowy egret* along the shore
of Waneka; at Greenlee, continuing *American avocets* and *solitary
sandpiper*, plus a flyover *marbled godwit*, shrieking loudly; continuing *Say
phoebes* and *bushtits*; with the orange-crowns, a bunch of *myrtle
warblers* and *Audubon warblers*, plus one or two *myrtle x Audubon hybrids*;
and a *Lincoln sparrow* amid at least 8 *Gambel white-crowned sparrows*.

[cobirds] Condors

2015-04-28 Thread Pam Piombino
Hi all,

With excitement about Condors being seen in the southwest, there is a
documentary about what it takes too keep these birds alive, healthy and
flying due to their consumption of lead ammunition tainted carrion.

Try and watch, "The Condors Shadow". Quite the reality check. The birds
are captured yearly, and the greater percentage have to undergo chelation
therapy to remove this killer from their systems.

Many of us lobbied the DOW Commissioners very hard recently, but they
wouldn't budge as to removing this unnecessary poison from the food chain.
Arizona has a mitigation program, but not Colorado.

Best, Pam
