[cobirds] Friday birds in Eastern Colorado

2015-05-08 Thread Joey Kellner
Ten of us started birding out east of Limon this morning in the on-and-off
rain and fog. Passerine migration was fairly slow with NO "eastern"
warblers being seen.

HOWEVER, at Flagler SWA several briefly saw a WOOD THRUSH (same color as
several of the Brown Thrashers in the area, but a much smaller bird with
much shorter tail and black SPOTS vs teardrop shaped markings on the
breast).

A flooded field along US 6 west of Prewitt Reservoir contained 23
White-faced Ibis and one GLOSSY IBIS. Photo and eBird checklist at:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23314343

Weld County 48 (south side of Lower Latham Reservoir) had ~250 White-faced
Ibis and 2 (TWO) GLOSSY IBIS! Dean Shoup got a GREAT photo of the closer
bird. Photo can be seen in eBird checklist:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23314345

Lastly...the bird of the day was a HUDSONIAN GODWIT in alternate (breeding)
plumage seen on Weld County Rd 42. Photos in eBird checklist:
http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S23314292

This above location also had a GREAT variety of shorebird species as can be
seen in the above checklist.

[cobirds] Loggerhead Shrike - Congress Park - Denver

2015-05-08 Thread Jared Del Rosso
At around 5:30 PM this afternoon, my dog and I saw a Loggerhead Shrike in a
fenced in field about a block north of the eastern edge of Congress Park.
The shrike was viewable from the sidewalk on Clayton St (the portion
running north / south behind Congress) and 10th and 11th avenues. It
perched, briefly, on a fenced in area -- which almost has the look of
community garden, though I'm not sure that it is -- within the larger,
fenced in area.

There were many, many starling, house sparrow, house finch, chipping
sparrow, and robin around this field. There may be other birds mixed in,
but it was difficult to pick through the sparrow in the grass and the
variable songs of the many starling complicating things. A birder with a
scope might have better luck, though I'm not sure you could get a clean
vantage from the sidewalk.

Later, at Cheesman, six White Pelican flew over, as did a half dozen or so
swallow, most of which I failed to ID. I did not see the poorwill, although
there continue to be reports of it in the neighborhood.

Best,

Jared Del Rosso

[cobirds] Black-chinned hummingbird Larimer County

2015-05-08 Thread Pat Hayward
Hi all,
We had our first black-chinned hummingbird (male) at our feeder this
morning.
Previous FOY:
2014: April 27
2011: 5/7
2009: 5/3

(obviously we haven't been as diligent recording these guys!)

Bullock's orioles showed up on scheduleon 5/3 as did Lazuli bunting (5/3),
poorwills and barn swallows (5/4). Our "friendly" bats returned to our
house eaves en masse on 5/4 as well. Just hope they don't find their way
INTO the house again this year!

why they ALWAYS show up at his house first!)

[cobirds] Tempel Grove update

2015-05-08 Thread Duane Nelson
Birders,

I thank Mark Peterson for posting the adult male Mourning Warbler from
Tempel Grove in Bent County this afternoon. I saw and photographed it on
three separate passes through the hotspot south of the memorial benches, but
it played "hard to get" for the CFO group there when I left late this
afternoon. West of County Road 35, I found a male Blackpoll Warbler and male
American Redstart while waiting for a friend to show up. These birds did
reappear, and many from CFO got to see them. The CFO group also saw an
immature male Summer Tanager and immature light-morph Broad-winged Hawk.

Working with the Verhoeff family, approximately 20 CFO birders got to see
the continuing Hudsonian Godwit in flooded fields at the intersection of
Bent County Roads 26.5 and JJ late this afternoon. I'm sure it was a lifer
for many. This update has a bittersweet ending. Irrigation will be
discontinued at dusk tonight, and it is highly unlikely that any more
sightings will take place once the fields contain no standing water, which I
expect will be the case tomorrow.

[cobirds] PIRATIC FLYCATCHER in Western Kansas 5/8

2015-05-08 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
There appears to be a PIRATIC FLYCATCHER at Scott Lake State Park, in Western
Kansas.  This is about 2.5 hours (137 miles from Lamar), since a lot of birders
will be in Lamar over the weekend, this might be a good detour.  The bird was
seen on the north side of the lake, right after the waterfall, and just before
you drive over the creek.  It was in some cottonwoods/willows. Photos are on
the ABA Rare Bird Alert facebook page.

It's funny that and I Matt Crook and I had the same bird!! The undertail
coverts of this bird matched for Chestnut-sided and remember that winter birds
have a strong eyering. My feeling was that this was a bird more in a weird
transition than a hybrid. Not saying I'm right but just an opinion.

[cobirds] South Valley Park (JeffCo) and Ketring Park (Arapahoe) May 8

2015-05-08 Thread David Suddjian
A view of Mann Reservoir in South Valley Park on my way to work this
morning produced 2 female *Red-necked Phalaropes*, 3 newly arrived female
*Buffleheads*, and a newly arrived female *Hooded Merganser*. The
phalaropes and merganser are rare for that body of water. When I looked
again in the late afternoon they were all absent.

Ketring Park had a moderate smattering of waterbirds of no special note. A
fast moving warbler flock in the cottonwoods was mostly the two
Yellow-rumped forms, but also contained a male *Tennessee Warbler*, a
*Yellow* and some *Orange-crowneds*. Other warblers outside that flock were
a female *Common Yellowthroat* and a *Wilson's*, and there was a *Gray
Catbird*. A *Western Tanager* called unseen from on high. Three *Red-breasted
Nuthatches* were also noted.

Two *Ospreys *passed over Santa Fe heading toward South Platte Park.

[cobirds] Upland Sandpiper, Larimer

2015-05-08 Thread Derek Hill
COBirds,

Last night while changing my spark plugs, I heard the unmistakable flight
call of an Upland Sandpiper overhead. In spring and late summer this is a
nightly/daily occurrence in North Central Texas where I'm from, but eBird
sure shows them to be rare in Larimer County. One of my favorite calls for
sure. This must have been about 10pm, southeast Fort Collins, Larimer
County.

Keep your eyes and ears peeled and check the grassy fields and sod farms!

[cobirds] scissor-t flyc, Cherry Creek SP

2015-05-08 Thread Karl Stecher Jr.

At 1:40 the scissor-tailed flycatcher was on the north side of the road,
east of the Lake loop, low in a field. It was directly opposite the
parking lot which is on the south side of the road east of the Lake Loop.
Then came the downpour.
To add to Loch's comments: Many hundreds of sparrows, esp many hundreds of
chippings; lots of lark sparrows. A few Cassin's kingbirds were present
besides the dozens of westerns. Another birder/photographer showed me his
Bulllock's oriole photo. At least one lark bunting there...I didn't see
it.
When I arrived home, both white-crowned and Brewer's sparrows were in the
back yard.
Both of my wren houses have occupants building.
Red-breasted nuthatches and bushtits are still here, so that they are
likely nesting.

all still present and he is still looking for other things.  I think I saw a
request for directions to this location, here is the link to the site on teh
Colorado County Birding website:

NOTE:  They have received a fair bit of rainfall in SE Colorado and the roads
are very muddy.  At least in some locations. -Mark Peterson

[cobirds] Pueblo City Park 5/8

2015-05-08 Thread Brandon K. Percival
Gene R, Phil G, and I birded for a little while in Pueblo City Park, below the
down pour started.  Highlights were: Broad-winged Hawk (adult), pair of
Mississippi Kites, Green Heron, and Eastern Kingbird.  A few Yellow-rumped
Warblers, were the only warblers we could find.  We attempted to bird in Rock
Canyon, though the down pour was too much.

Yesterday evening there was a loggerhead shrike on the fence on Belleview
just before it turns southbound toward Peoria (not at the Peoria, turn, but
as the eastbound road makes its first gentle turn). This is Cherry Creek
