Re: [cobirds] Sabine's Gull and more at Chatfield State park (Douglas County)

2015-09-18 Thread Scott Somershoe
I took my 3 yr old daughter out to the marina spit about 4:15pm. She spotted
every pelican and non-Sabines gull out there. I picked out a common tern but no
Sabines. The wind was also howling. A bit after 5 we stopped by the swim beach
and some happy birders from St Louis just had a Sabines fly by. I looked for a
bit longer from a few spots up to the boat ramp by the dam and never saw the
elusive Sabines. The point is a Sabines was around late today at chatfield and,
on the bright side, I was able to bird with the kiddo, almost fuss free, for a
while (sand and rocks and water help immensely!).

Good birding,

[cobirds] American Three-toed Woodpecker and Sabine's Gull, El Paso County, 9/18

2015-09-18 Thread Mel Goff
Hi, cobirders.

I had the good fortune to see two great birds today. Late this morning as the
WIND died down at Big Johnson Reservoir, I finally saw the Sabine’s Gull that
has been reported there over the past week or two. Not a lot happening at Big
Johnson, but I did not walk around to the east side, so...

This afternoon I decided to give another try for the Three-toed Woodpecker at
Black Forest Regional Park, also here in El Paso County. I had walked out to
the east edge of the park from the main playground/picnic area where others had
seen it before. Nothing happening there, so I headed north along the main path
on the east side. After several hundred yards I saw a bird with the typical
woodpecker flight pattern, so I followed it only to find it was a Red-shafted
Northern Flicker. At that point I ran into a young birder and his mother who
are here from Oregon. He had just found the elusive (at least for me)
Three-toed and got me on it. He is a home-schooled kid and a real delight. His
mom said that was their eighth woodpecker species in Colorado. Thanks to Mark
and Michele for their help!!

Good birding!

[cobirds] Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 9/18 (more stuff)

2015-09-18 Thread Brandon K. Percival
I went back to Pueblo Reservoir this afternoon, near Sailboard launching area,
there were at least three Common Terns, at least one Forster's Tern, and a
(non-adult) LAUGHING GULL.
Hopefully the jaeger and all these other birds will be around for tomorrow's
annual Pueblo County Fall Bird Count.  There will be a lot of birders counting
birds all over the county tomorrow.
Good birding, Brandon PercivalPueblo West, CO

2015-09-18 Thread Douglas Kibbe
There was a Sabines gull present north of the marina sand spit this morning.
However it an immature, not the adult bird shown in Tom's photo.
Also present this morning on the sand spit itself were a Forster's tern, cattle
egret and a red phalarope.

[cobirds] juvenile JAEGER at Pueblo Reservoir, Pueblo Co. 9/18

2015-09-18 Thread Brandon K. Percival
This morning, I saw a juvenile Jaeger on the water and in the flight, at a
great distance on the east side of Pueblo Reservoir.  I got some lousy photos,
that are now on the CFO Facebook page.  I first saw it on the water far out
from Sailboard launching area.  It flew and landed in the SE Corner of the
Reservoir.  I drove over there, and it was little closer, and flew again, and I
took some far away photos.  I lost it as it was flying over Sailboard launching
area.  The wind came up, and I never saw it again. Brandon PercivalPueblo West,
