[cobirds] Northern Mockingbird & Pine Siskin - Botanic Gardens & Cheesman (Denver)

2015-10-02 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning, I came upon a Northern Mockingbird in Denver Botanic Gardens.
It made its way, with many of the Gardens' junco and flicker, over into
Cheesman, where I saw it briefly around the flower beds near the pavilion.
Those beds were also drawing robin, junco, Clay-colored Sparrow, and a Lark
Sparrow.

On Wednesday, a small flock of Pine Siskin passed through Cheesman.

There have also been several Ruby-crowned Kinglet, a few Orange-crowned
Warbler, and one or two lingering Broad-tailed Hummingbird at the Gardens
this week. The area Bushtit (15-20 of them) seem to be congregating here
too. Wilson's Warblers are increasingly difficult to find. No sign of the
poorwill.

At around 5:30 this evening, I spotted this Tern that looks quite a bit like
that seen by Glenn today. What leads me to believe this is the same Arctic Tern
is the rounded head, lighter carpal bar and pale gray primaries. I've attached
a picture, which as usual is nowhere as good as Glenn's fine shots.

[cobirds] Bird Conservancy Banding Station at Barr, 10-2-15

2015-10-02 Thread meredith
A nice cool morning with a great mix of species! Two new species for the
season, both of which are unusual captures for the station: We started the
day with a lovely (and very feisty) young male Rose-breasted Grosbeak. We
also had a young Nashville Warbler, who had managed to survive what looked
to have been a severe (but completely healed) injury to the back of her
head. Total of 40 new birds:

Downy Woodpecker 1
Black-capped Chickadee 2
Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1
Hermit Thrush 5
Gray Catbird 1
Orange-crowned Warbler 8
Nashville Warbler 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Myrtle 1
Yellow-rumped Warbler, Audubon's 4
Common Yellowthroat 1
Wilson's Warbler 2
Spotted Towhee 2
Song Sparrow 5
Lincoln's Sparrow 1
Dark-eyed Junco, Oregon 3
Dark-eyed Junco, Pink-sided 1
Rose-breasted Grosbeak 1

We have just a little over a week to go for this banding seasonour last
day will be Sunday, October 11. We will be open every day until then EXCEPT
Thursday, 10/8. We are opening nets about 6:45, and running until noon or
whenever it gets too hot or too
windy or too whatever. School groups arrive about 9:30 a.m. most weekdays.

[cobirds] Green Heron, Lake Estes, Estes Park, Larimer Co. 10/2

2015-10-02 Thread Jim Nelson
We've been enjoying a nice fall visit in Colorado for the past week, but, until
today, I didn't have anything special to report.

This morning we had a nice sunny walk in the Matthews-Reeser Bird Sanctuary at
Lake Estes in Estes Park. We were out on the pine covered peninsula that juts
into the lake, when we heard an unusual sound. My wife was the first to spot
what turned out to be a hatch-year Green Heron. It was perched in a ponderosa
pine near the water and then flew to the marshy end of the inlet on the west
side of the peninsula. Checking eBird I found only one other report from the
Estes Park/Rocky Mountain National Park area -- at Lake Estes on two days in
May 2003, and no other reports for Larimer County above the edge of the
foothills. A nice county bird for us.

Here are some pictures of the juvenile plumage, Arctic Tern from Chatfield.

http://www.pbase.com/gwalbek/2015_birds

He has been sitting on the end of the sandspit, taking off to fill up on
gizzard shad and returning to the sandspit. At first glance he could be
overlooked as a Common Tern, but aging the bird helps determine it’s ID. The
white secondaries with white-tipped, secondary coverts should not appear in any
plumage Common Tern. Additionally, Common Tern should show a dark secondary
bar in all plumages except Alternate, which this bird clearly is not.

Hello, Yesterday morning Sally Swain and I spotted a perched
Swainson's Hawk along 79th St. in Niwot just north of the transfer
station. We've been seeing one along this section of road all
season. Later, as I excited the car at the upper lot at Sandstone Ranch a
really dark Merlin took up from the bluff and cruised passed me pistons
humming, heading in the direction of Union Reservoir. This morning I had
just settled into the car after a hike at Rabbit Mountain when a Rednaped
Sapsucker flew into the closest tree. Had my first flock of,[10], Bushtits

Osprey atop a wooden post at the western end of Clover Basin Reservoir.
Nearby were 2 juvenile Little Blue Heron perched above the mud on a

[cobirds] Possible Arctic Tern, Chatfield Douglas, Co.

2015-10-02 Thread Glenn Walbek, Castle Rock, CO
Folks,

I spent some time studying an interesting sterna tern on the Chatfield sandspit
this morning.  The bird is small, with a small dark bill, except a reddish
center and inner bill.  In flight, the primaries were fairly uniform gray with
white secondaries and secondary covert tips.  The tips of the primaries are
dark.  There was no hint of a dark secondary bar.  Resting, the primaries look
a tad darker than the mantle with pale outlines, but gray not black. I suspect
the bird is a juvenile (see worn juvenile in Sibley's guide).  I will upload
some photos later.
