Southwest of Lake Ladora; not quite as far south as E 64th/Wildlife Drive,
but just north of there. If you take the Ladora Loop trail north of the
road (opposite the woodland trail), you follow it around to where it is
going east and then turns north.  At that corner is some brush and mullein;
the bird was hanging out with some other sparrow species there. Others
included White-crowned Sparrow, American Tree Sparrow, Song and Vesper
Sparrows.

Ducks included Canvasback, Redhead, Bufflehead, Ring-necked, Hooded
Mergansers, etc. I didn't see any goldeneyes or scaup, but I didn't visit
any of the other bodies of water in the refuge.

[cobirds] 6 Common Loons at Chatfield SP 11/2

2015-11-02 Thread David Suddjian
This morning at Chafield Res. there were 4 *Common Loons* together near the
Douglas shoreline on the water between the Old Heronry Overlook and the
line of buoys, plus one north of the Marina sand spit, and one more close
to the dam tower. 6 Total.

Also my first *Common Goldeneye* of the season, 1 female *Red-breasted
Merganser*, 1 *Merlin*, 1 *Prairie Falcon*, and 1 *Nor. Harrier*. It was
pretty breezy so I did not do any land birding of consequence.

[cobirds] late Gray Catbird, Fort Collins (Larimer) on 2Nov

2015-11-02 Thread DAVID A LEATHERMAN

Today, while photographing plants on the grounds of what remains of CSU's Plant
Environmental Research Center (PERC) plantings - it is just west of the
monstrous, new football stadium building site in the sw corner of the main Fort
Collins campus - I had a Gray Catbird. It's late on the calendar for this
unhardiest (is that a word?) of our common mimic thrushes, but maybe not
considering the mild weather we've had so far this autumn. This would be a
good bird to keep track of in hopes it sticks around until the Fort Collins
Christmas Bird Count about 6 weeks from now. The location: in the extreme nw
part of the PERC grounds is a large, pale building with lots of black planting
tubs stacked by its se corner. Attached to the south side of this building is
a dark green cement block shed. South of these structures is a 150-foot long
hedge row oriented north-south. The bird was at the south end of the hedgerow
near the cluster of buckeye/horsechestnut trees. Just west of this part of
PERC is a large, multistoried new dorm.

As further demonstration of how creatures are hanging on to summer, also today
a tattered but active Common Buckeye (butterfly) was soaking up sun here and
there on the paths in the northwest corner of Fort Collins' Gardens on Spring
Creek, about a mile south of PERC on the west side of Centre Avenue south of
Prospect.

[cobirds] Colorado Christmas Bird Count dates

2015-11-02 Thread 'Brandon K. Percival' via Colorado Birds
Hi all,
Christmas Bird Count Compilers got an e-mail from National Audubon today, that
their website is open to post dates for Christmas Bird Counts.  As usual the
dates are from Monday, 14 Dec to Tuesday, 5 January.
So, the weekends, when many counts will be held this year would be Saturday, 19
December and Sunday, 20 December, Saturday 26 December, and Sunday, 27
December, and Saturday, 2 January 2016 and Sunday, 3 January 2016.  Another
popular date would be Friday, 1 January 2016.  There are usually over 45
Christmas Bird Counts held in Colorado annually, from all over the state.
I'll try to post dates here, later in November.  Compilers if you want people
to help with your count, go ahead and let the word out on cobirds, etc. and
post the date to the CBC Website.  If you have issues doing that, let me know,
or the CBC people back east.  Some counts in rural areas in the state, don't
have a lot of help, so if you can help with some of these counts, that would be
wonderful.

[cobirds] First of the season Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk in Canon City

2015-11-02 Thread SeEttaM .
I spotted a Harlan's Red-tailed Hawk from the MacKenzie Ave end of the
Canon City Riverwalk over the week-end. I got two pics which show it's
white lorals and cheeks,
whitish chest, whitish underside of tail with otherwise blackish feathering
that I have uploaded to my Birds and Nature blog
.

Yesterday I enjoyed at least 10 Yellow-rumped Warblers foraging in a mixed
flock on that same MacKenzie Ave part of the Canon City Riverwalk. Since
we usually have overwintering Yellow-rumps it is hard to know if these are
latish migrants for just birds that will stay around over the winter.
There was a Black Phoebe in that same area on Friday but haven't seen it
since.
